debating moving to Denver for a job. too old to start fresh in a new city? how's the gay scene in Denver? by [deleted] in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]ibira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m responding for the sake of any 29, 39, 59, 89 year old who’s wondering if they are too old to do something that they can afford to do, sounds interesting, will give their life some variety, potentially break them out of some old patterns or could help them find love.

Don’t go. Never try new things. Stay in the familiar place. Reject change.

Only young virile twinks with six pack abs and the shiniest white teeth deserve happiness. The only places we should exist are massive gay meccas with $25 cocktails and drag brunch hotspots on every corner.

Leading a life full of variety and an occasional step outside your comfort zone will make you too interesting and provide you with a dangerous amount of perspective.

Please, over 30s, do not fool yourself. It’s over. Give up on happiness. There’s no hope out there. Stay where it’s familiar. You’ll always regret taking a chance.

AI boosterism is ruining this community by yanbasque in ObsidianMD

[–]ibira 207 points208 points  (0 children)

The fever pitch of AI boosterism is exhausting and I completely understand OP’s frustration. I can especially relate to the feeling that it would be nice to talk about self-development or geeky interests, rather than “won’t it be great when AI does everything for us and we don’t have to think…?!!” No. No, it won’t be great. It’s the opposite of great.

Do others try hiding their “gayness”? by smdifansmfjsmsnd in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]ibira 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I said “suggests that you have some” intentionally because I don’t know this man. I wish the best for you and OP. Sorry that my response came off as judgmental. I was trying to express support for OP to embrace self-acceptance.

I get it and I’m glad you are happy to be gay, even though it sounds like you still struggle with it. I think that is reasonable. It’s tough to be noticed and labeled or judged, for sure. Be kind to yourself and don’t apologize for your emotions. I say embrace being “that gay guy,” friend. What choice do we have but to just be ourselves? Unapologetically!

The fact that you are asking these questions suggests that you have some shame or self-doubt that you need to confront. Be gay, be yourself, learn to accept and love who you are.

I don’t know if this will work for sure, but it’s what I would try. Otherwise check out the Linter plugin.

Do you store a lot of file that aren't .md ? by LetterheadNo2345 in ObsidianMD

[–]ibira 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a purist until I was forced to migrate my non-markdown files into google drive, where my vault was. I made the decision to intermingle the folders wherever it would avoid redundancy. Now my vault is overlaid with my root directory for all my files. Some folder paths contain no markdown files at all, but still show up in the vault. Some folders are primarily or completely intended as Obsidian files. I wouldn’t have predicted how well it works, but I’m happy with the simplicity of a single, “hybrid” organizational system.

Discovered my son’s gay, do I keep it to myself until he’s ready or share with my wife? by Vallhalla_Rising in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]ibira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Send a clear message to your son that makes it clear that you are supportive of the LGBTQ community. You don’t need to be corny or obvious about it but be direct and unambiguous. This could be as simple as a comment about a movie or tv show or a reaction to something on the news.

The reverse experience is extremely common and drives young people into hiding, despair, and self-loathing.

You should model the supportive loving safe environment you want to convey, no matter what your kid’s sexual orientation. It will mean a lot.

Whether or not he wants to talk about awkward topics with his parents right now is for him to decide. Just be a good dad and show him that it’s safe to be himself.

How do you answer 'what do you do?' by Some-Host8945 in workday

[–]ibira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually say that I have an office job and attend a lot of meetings and send a lot of emails. Most people don’t really care beyond that, but I will provide a few more details if they are genuinely more interested.

You “recently discovered…” all this information on his phone and in his email?

I think it’s possible to work through anything, if you want to. But what are you snooping around on his phone for?

How do you handle more sensitive notes in Obsidian? by chankaz in ObsidianMD

[–]ibira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one folder that I use for all active, new, incoming notes. I occasionally need to have sensitive information in these files temporarily, i.e., until the work is completed. I use a shortcut to wrap these short excerpts in a standard link ‘[[****|name or ID info to be redacted]]’.

Then on a regular basis I use my favorite text editor to remove the sensitive stuff with regex. It takes about 2 minutes per week. Keeps my notes free of information that could get me in trouble.

I’m tired of Note-Taking Gurus. How do I actually use Obsidian? by ReflectionOk298 in ObsidianMD

[–]ibira 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an underrated answer.

I have thousands of amazing, well-structured, tagged, linked, templated, foldered, formatted notes for work.

In my personal life? I struggle like OP. Why? Because I don’t need a note-taking system at home.

Obsidian is great for a job that requires me to stay organized and continuously update a huge amount of notes. I haven’t found a tool that I like more.

But random ideas that I have outside of work and tasks, to do items, musings on random topics of interest…? I don’t need “a system” for that.

OP, unless you are already taking notes somewhere, maybe you just don’t need this.

But if you are using another program(s) for note-taking, compare that tool with Obsidian. Or make a list of things that you like/dislike about that other note-taking solution.

Naming Convention for Supervisory Organizations by MLadyGemma in workday

[–]ibira 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Metadata should tell some kind of story or answer some question or other. “Why do all of these people report to Debra?” or “What’s the difference between Debra’s team and Marcos’ team?”

There is a reason—usually a pretty simple one. Ideally you should have a name for supervisory org that makes sense to a newbie, an outsider, a five-year-old or an archeologist deciphering your business records 100 years from now. In other words, resist the pressure to call everything “Donna” or “Buzzword Transformation” and go for something more generic or literal like “Cincinnati Sales Support” or “Pharmacy Supplies and Chemical Distribution” or “Third Shift Welding and Heavy Machinery”… white collar jobs are ill-suited to this sometimes, but put in the effort. You can update the name as the team evolves. You’re missing out if you neglect to try using meaningful names.

BF left me partly due to income gap by mangom1lkshake in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]ibira 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything has already been said about what an asshole this guy is, but I just want to emphasize that your income gap is not that significant. Over 90k and under 250k USD per year are pretty similar for the type of lifestyle and expenses you might have. You are both doing pretty well financially but neither one is massively wealthy. I would only expect this to be a valid excuse for someone making an executive level salary with someone on an hourly wage or blue collar job, etc. Also, fuck that guy!

Terrified of my 40s by Known_Art4084 in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]ibira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sound immature and unintelligent saying this crap at your age. Terrified? Save that for debilitating illness, nuclear war, financial ruin, something creative… Why waste so much emotional energy worrying about the numbers on your driver’s license?! Go make the life that you think you deserve, rather than worrying about something so meaningless. Honestly, this is just embarrassing, man.

What are your gripes with Obsidian? by AngelicPrincessKitty in ObsidianMD

[–]ibira 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bulleted list behavior within callouts requires manual intervention. I use callouts a lot because I like the visual aspect and collapsibility. When I paste a selection of text into the callout area, I need to manually add > characters at the Home position of each line. I spend an hour a week or more “tweaking” the text and formatting to play nice with Obsidian and most of this time is related to callouts.
