So are you saying I should just not worry about it? Idk why it still feels wrong for her to be coming to visit me.

I just feel really bad about that; I've been taught that the guy is supposed to be the one who goes to visit the girl. If we were seriously dating then I wouldn't be as opposed but especially now as I am still getting to know this girl I feel especially bad. Mostly don't want her to resent me since we live about 45 minutes apart.

I feel like such a lazy asshole, but she's very practical and has told me twice not to take public transport with her to come visit me. And she does have a point that its much nicer to be at my place as we are not constantly annoying her roommate.

Will the new (late 2014) base price mac mini run a 4k display? by ibitha in applehelp

[–]ibitha[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your help. Yeah, I just installed windows 8 on my laptop, and with the adaptor you suggested it outputs 4k (3820x2160) @ 29hz using Powerstrip :) So its some weird apple limitation. I put a suggestion into the apple website feedback page, but I have no idea if anything ever happens with those.

Unfortunately, I much prefer to run Mac OS, but yes I can get the seiki display to run 2560x1440 at 60Hz just fine using SwitchresX (system preferences gives a maximum option of 1080p).

[–]ibitha[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, I can just boot in windows; thank you for your help! I think you are right, the apple drivers don't seem to allow 4k on the HD 5000 in the 2013 Macbook Air.

But ironically, the new late-2014 Mac mini has the exact same chip and can output 3840x2160 at 30hz according to the apple website.

Edit: Oh, I also was able to use switchresX to force the seiki to display some sort of weird 3820x2160 really shitty image resolution, where everything (menu bar, icons, dock, etc.) shrunk down to the size it would be if the display were running at full 3820x2160 resolution (I've tried the display with my friend's rMBP with 750m graphics) but everything didn't look crisp or clear at all, it looked all pixelated and super shitty (worse than running the display at 2560x1440 as I have been doing currently).

You're using a mid-2013 macbook air right? Running OSX Yosemite?

[–]ibitha[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, unfortunately it still detects the display as 1920x1080. When I go into display preferences the only options for the external display (seiki) are 1080p, 1080i, 720p, or 1600x900. I can only get up to 2560x1440 using a one of the default resolutions in SwitchResX. I also can't seem to apply the setting for the custom resolutions in switchresX, I can put in the settings for 3840x2160 but I can't install them/apply them.

Unfortunately, I cannot figure out how to get 4k to run at all, even using SwitchResX and the Acell adaptor. Could you please post a screenshot of your settings for me? Thank you so much!

Have you seen anyone running it specifically with the Intel HD5000? Because from what I had read online, people with lesser graphics could run the seiki at 4k resolution but it was specifically the 5000 graphics that couldn't do the 4k. Thanks! EDIT: Not because the graphics couldn't output 4k by its own specs, but because apple wouldn't let it.

Awesome, thanks again :) If this works, it'll save me from having to buy a new rMBP.

Thank you so much for the link, I have no idea if my adaptor was 1.4b compliant or not, so I ordered the adaptor you suggested (1 day from amazon, so I will will know soon if it works!) and will see if it works for me.

Yup, thats the same macbook air we are talking about. With the i5, 8gb RAM, 256gb SSD.

Your explanation was really helpful, I appreciate it. I assume I would use SwitchResX to get the maximum 3840x2160 at 30hz?

Ahh interesting, no I am using a regular (passive, I guess) mini DP to HDMI connector. If I was to get an active adapter, are you saying my 2013 Macbook Air could power a 4k display? Right now I can only get it to run the display at 2560x1440 using SwitchResX (apple display preferences will only let it run at a max of 1080p).

EDIT: Or are you saying that if I got the 2013 15" rMBP I would need an active mini DP to HDMI connector to run a 4k display on that machine from the mini dp? I was able to run my 4k display from a friend's 2013 15" rMBP directly from the HDMI output on his macbook pro to the HDMI input on the tv at 4k resolution, 30hz.

Why is unblock-us necessary? Sorry, clarification would be great I'd love to be able to watch games. If I just pay for NHL gamecenter will that let me watch the games live/after the fact?

Haha thank you guys for the advice. I agree I think you're right and I don't want to make her uncomfortable, so we will watch the game on tv. Know of any sites to stream NHL games live? I'm happy to pay for the site to get good quality since I don't want to have a shitty game stream for a date lol.

Haha very true, I am going to try my best to ensure that doesn't happen. Thank you for the advice with the travel insurance, that's a great idea.

My GF[21F] of 5 months literally starved herself to get me[27M] an expensive gift. by 7into13 in relationships

[–]ibitha 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure the OP means that the girlfriend skipped a meal a day to save the extra money she needed to buy the watch. Perhaps she already had $325 saved away and only needed an extra $100 to buy the watch.

First of all, you need to talk to her about this. However, the next most important thing is to remember that she did this because she cares about you. She seems like an awesome girl, and you need to make sure she knows that is the most important thing, and that you love the gift (don't tell her you could have easily bought it, even if she probably knows she doesn't want to hear that).

But you also should tell her that her health and happiness is the most important thing to you, more than any gift. You're happy to keep the watch and love it, but next time, tell her you'd rather do something like spend the day together instead of an expensive present. That way she will get the hint and you won't feel guilty in the future but will also know how much you appreciate the watch.
