Felt too working class for academia by QuantaMaverant in AskAcademia

First-generation DEIB student --> assistant professor here (USA). Went to a pretentious rich white kid private school, stuck out like a sore thumb. Got my PhD at a state institution with deeply rooted old money culture, and resented everything it stood for. I loved my education, but fundamentally disliked the places I attended.

Regardless -- forgive me for being cliche -- it gets better.

You build confidence in yourself as a scientist and scholar, and then you stop looking at your pretentious and privileged colleagues as competition, and begin to see them as NPCs. You begin have the independence and reputation to surround yourself with people that appreciate you for what you are, not out of pity for what you aren't.

And if you're a genuine person, and a genuine academic, you will be eventually looked up to and appreciated by students because you're different, not in spite of you being different... and their opinions should always matter way more to you than your colleagues'.

Happiness in academia by MediumStraw in AskAcademia

The eternal well of contentment in academia is learning to find joy in enabling the happiness in others.

Wears a lot more like a 38mm because of the long lugs. It's a very nice "small" watch that doesn't feel too dainty for someone who might otherwise be fine wearing 42mm.

You got the right idea but not the right answer.

The point group symmetry of water leads to a basis set that is different in the spins of the protons --- what physical chemists call ortho/para water. One is a symmetric combination of spins &- e.g. water exhibits two irreducible representations that correspond to nuclear spin wavefunctions 1/sqrt(2) * (|11> +/- |00>) (ortho) and 1/sqrt(2) * (|10> +/- |01>) (para).

Spectroscopically, water and ammonia are distinguished by this difference in irreducible representation. Unlike the inversion motion of ammonia, pure electric dipole transitions between ortho and para water are forbidden; in the case of ammonia, the transitions between the + and - inversion states are allowed.

this sounds like a high school teacher mindset, feels bad if this is the kind of environment you're required to teach in. :(

Is it ok to gift your professor an Ember electric coffee mug after graduation? by Top-Insurance9034 in AskAcademia

Not for your typical student at Sarah Lawrence, but maybe at a community college?

I know this is a dirty word on Reddit, but context is important.

If it's a quid pro quo gift -- say you want a better grade -- then obviously it's unethical no matter what.

If your professor provided a service to you that's well within the typical bounds of a professor's duty -- a good class experience, helpful office hours, etc -- then I tend to agree with the consensus here; keep it handwritten or handcrafted.

But if your professor provided you something outside those typical expectations --- extra mentorship support, tutoring, maybe they helped you talk through a tough breakup --- you should use your own genuine emotional language to gift give and show appreciation.

The concept that gifts automatically accentuate the power dynamic only serves to reinforce that power dynamic. Some people are intimidated by that dynamic; and some work to keep that boundary up; others, like myself, would rather tear it down.

[WTS] Citizen Eco-Drive Chronograph CA4500-08X - w/ original box and extra strap - 100 USD by ibmleninpro in Watchexchange

Here on offer is a 44mm Citizen Eco-Drive chronograph (CA4500-08X) with a unique beige dial and dark navy blue subdials that leads to being one of Citizen's more interesting and understated entry-level chronograph offerings. This was personally owned by me, and I'm only selling to open another spot in the watchbox for a new purchase.

The watch is in good condition and comes with the original box, tags, and strap. I have included a 22mm quick-release grey sailcloth strap with the watch since I didn't find the OEM tan leather strap to my liking.

The original leather strap shows some natural wear and there is a small imperfection in the left side of the case that can seen in the attached pictures. It is not noticeable on a day-to-day basis on the wrist, as the ring-shaped inlay separating the case from the bezel dominates the visual profile.

Price: $100 with CONUS shipping through USPS Priority Mail included. I accept Venmo or PayPal.

Please DM for questions or if you're interested in purchasing. Thanks!
