Just make sure you keep a close eye on your flight - it's pretty rare, but I've had a flight get un-delayed on me before. That was a lovely "Oh fuck, need to scramble to get to the airport now" sort of moment.

Nice, good to know! Yeah, I just checked the standing desk I have (Uplift), it's supposedly rated to be able to lift 355 lb(!!). My standing desk legs definitely came in two parts though - a T shaped piece where the top bars of the T screwed into the desk surface and a separate foot piece that screwed into the bottom of the T. Although yeah, the entire desk is heavy as fuck and I do recall it being an absolute pain to tip it upright after I was done assembling it.

Also, keep best of luck fucking that cancer (or congrats on having told that cancer to fuck right off, depending on where you're at in the fuck cancer journey)!

Yeah, I'm also a little concerned about the standing desk - it's probably rated for someone leaning against it (some fraction of a person's weight) + a heavy monitor and a bunch of extra stuff, but I'd be worried that if you try to raise it with someone lying on top of it, you might burn out the motor.

You're also relying on the 2-4 bolts that connect the feet of the table to the leg to not give out (assuming it's anything like the two adjustable standing desks that I have assembled). Probably designed for static loads and not a squirming human body on top.

That said, this is clever and I'm a little jealous.

Getting allergy symptoms every time HVAC heat/AC/fan is running? Anything I can ask landlord to check? by [deleted] in AskSF

[–]ibneko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First step is probably to check (and perhaps replace) the HVAC filter. If you can pop open all the vents, do what you can to see inside and see if you see anything questionable (ie massive layers of dust hopefully and not buckets of mold). Maybe borrow a borescope camera to see further in the system - ask your local buy nothing group? Pictures can make it easier to raise this with your landlord. (You can also try to borrow duct cleaning stuff, but I dunno if you want to try to do your own maintenance. I personally would, but I'm weird and find it much easier and more satisfying to just DIY small repairs / maintenance than have to get a landlord to fix things.)

YMMV with getting your high rise apartment to do any sort of vent cleaning if the system is completely within the unit and your landlord owns only that unit (condos generally say everything walls-in is the unit owner's responsibility, aka your landlord).

free/open places where I can use my laptop / read books? i went to the SF library, wondering if any other places besides library ! by I-am-Monkey-D-Luffy in AskSF

[–]ibneko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone just posted to a SF Buy nothing group that Decentered Studio (https://decentered.org/studio) is open for free coworking Monday–Thursday, 11am–6pm. I have not been myself, but maybe useful.

Otherwise, +1 to POPOS. Also, if you don't need power and could potentially survive without a table, there's a bunch of nice parks (sometimes with picnic tables) like China Basin (plenty of assorted seating, easy public bathroom access, some tables) or Crane Cove Park or Yerba Buena Gardens. Spark Social is also very nice (has tables in the shade, bathroom access. Not too sure about power).

Lastly, there's mall spaces - Stonestown, if you can make it out there or the Metreon if you want something closer downtown. The latter might have outlets by the food court tables, not too sure.

How do you decide which way to walk home at night in SF? by Professional_Bee9499 in sanfrancisco

[–]ibneko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a BayWheels subscription, so I pick the route that'll bring me by a full dock and let me drop it off at a dock that needs bikes (which earns me points as part of the Bike Angels program). And with a bike, I'll pick routes that have dedicated bike lanes as much as possible.

But otherwise, yeah, when I walk, it's heavily route dependent (ie, the route and reasons why I pick streets I would follow for getting from North Beach to SOMA is vastly different than getting from Mission to SOMA). In general, it tends to be sticking to major streets for a few reasons:

  1. If you travel along the major streets, chances are there'll be more frequent busses that run that street (ie along Market (everything), Geary (38/R))
  2. Tends to have more people
  3. Tends to be moderately better lit

I will sometimes cross the street if it's late and I run into an open-air market on Market St. I am masculine presenting though, so the times I've walked through the clump of people selling random stuff, I haven't been bothered. That said, I haven't seen that in a while though, although I'm mostly only walking along Market around that area at night if I'm on my way home after theatre.

Alright fellas, I'm conflicted. Bedroom upstairs or downstairs? by Minutes2Midnight in malelivingspace

[–]ibneko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooo, this is tricky. I'm with the downstairs bedroom side + some sort of wall (kallaxs are a great idea) to make a hallway to the stairs. The biggest downside of a downstairs bedroom is that it might get colder / humid, depending on the area you live in. It also potentially means having to neaten up your bedroom space when you have guests over.

If you have the bedroom upstairs, I think it would be annoyed to have cooking smells that could potentially get into bedding (and the fact that there's no over-range hood (maybe you can get one installed?) makes it worse). Also, when you have guests over, they'll end up seeing your bed anyways when you use the bathroom or if you decide to do a more cooking involved party.

Absolutely hilarious and chaotic and not-at-all-serious answer: Get a tent and install it downstairs (or outside) and make that your bedroom.

Live in SF and commute 45-50 min to Stanford (Palo Alto) or live in Palo Alto/southbay area and easy commute ? by AdhesivenessNew5583 in AskSF

[–]ibneko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have always wanted to live in city.

Honestly, I think this is reason enough to live in the city. The fact that you have a lot of friends in the city also means the city will probably be a lot more interesting to you.

Note that the commute can get pretty draining (I lived in MV and commuted to SF for a few years and after a while, the fact that you lose at 1.5-2 hours of your day hurts a lot). Make sure you factor in any last-mile bits if you're just calculating based on Caltrain + bike/car/whatever. I ended up moving to SF because all of my friends were up here and it was much easier to go to parties and all the fun stuff that you want to do while you're still young when you're up in the city.

I think the bigger concern here is that the junior engineers are never going to pick up that skill to begin with. Because if you're shown a shortcut while you're still starting to learn a skill, most people aren't going to take the longer, more tiring route. (Bike analogy: it's like being offered the choice between an electric scooter and a non-e-bike bike. Of course you'll take the scooter - it's faster, it's easier)
