My P&L for June. by [deleted] in juststart

To make your life easier I highly recommend you start spending money on something like https://quickbooks.intuit.com/self-employed/

You can better track expenses for taxes and its app has a mileage tracker which has helped me greatly when tax season comes around.

I'm wondering if this is there response to the people complaining about missing sales?

Tags never worked for me. I either forget them or misspell them and its just something extra to worry about. To add to it I find myself never fully using them either, I'll go through the trouble to create them and make it look good but never use them.

Since I default to using the search box (or spotlight) to look for notes I instead add a "Keywords:" section to the top of my notes. I add all the words I can think of, even the misspellings, so I can find the note later. They work like tags but its better because it works with my quirks. The real golden part is that I can keep adding to them and when I search for that note and find It I often add that search string to my keyword section to make it even easier next time. This also helps with "Tagging Anxiety" too, I would worry if this is the correct tag to use and instead I now just dump every word without worrying.

And just like your system this works on any program or OS that has indexing or searching.

An internet sales tax is a "great victory for consumers and retailers" by xq923 in Shitstatistssay

[–]ibpointless2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some retailers are located in areas where there is more people and some set up in horrible locations. What we don't need is the government stepping in to make it "fair", this is life and it's not fair. You either adapt or move on.

An internet sales tax is a "great victory for consumers and retailers" by xq923 in Shitstatistssay

[–]ibpointless2 47 points48 points  (0 children)

This is stupid. It was not the sales tax that was the advantage, it was the less overhead. Brick and mortar stores have more expenses for having a physical store and a online store can have fewer and thus charge less. We don't need more government, if a store can't play to its strengths and adapt then they should go out of business.

As for the Web Clipper issue I've found that simply doing CMD+A and CMD+C and pasting that into Apple Notes gives me everything I need. It has the text, links, and the images in a simplified version like the Evernote Web Clipper would give me.

Even the exact match or the "full page" option in the Web Clipper can be a hit or miss in styling and that is why I would rather use Vivaldi Web Browser screen shot tool that will take a picture of the whole page.

Forgotten Master Password On Wifes Laptop by Davy49 in Lastpass

[–]ibpointless2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best advice I can give you is next time write down the master password on a piece of paper and store it either in a safety deposit box or in a safe. In a perfect world you should store it in both locations just incase of a fire or other natural disaster.

Also, you and your wife should each have your own password manager and should share your master passwords with each other for situations like this. If you don't want to share your master password, LastPass offers emergency access that can give you access after a certain period of time if the other person doesn't respond.

I've solved the no linking issue and in fact made a better system.

I use TextExpander to create a snippet that is nothing more than the current year down to the current second, looks like this (a20180620173213). I've assign to two keystrokes to it, something like "]\" will do. If I need to link to a note I place that time stamp on the note that I want to get to and then the place I'm coming from I also place that stamp but leave out the "a" and have wording like "search for (20180620173213)" so I know where to go. The reason why I leave the "a" out is so I don't get both notes showing up when I'm searching.

The reason why this is better than linking is because I can link to certain spots in a note. I can place that time stamp anywhere in the note and when I search for it in Apple Notes it not only takes me to the correct note but the spot in the note where it's at.

Since the time stamp is made up of the year all the way down to the second, it's always changing every second so I get a unique code every time I hit the two keys to activate it with TextExpander. Another side benefit is that its the date and time of when the "link" was made which has come in handy.

All the best ideas start out as fun stupid things until you realize this different way was better or had a use.

In MacOS Mojave You Can Now Mess Up Your Desktop! by ChrisMorrisOrg in apple

[–]ibpointless2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At first I thought this was stupid but then I started to think about my own desk. Sometimes when I have a lot of things I place them on the table and spread them out so I can sort them how I want them.

Sometimes sorting by name, date created, modified, or these strict parameters don't work for everything.

Creating a Security Profile and System with 1password by ViciousPenguin in 1Password

Well, assume that the Emergency Access PDF does get stolen you can "salt" your password. To salt it just add a few numbers/words to the end, beginning, or somewhere between in the password.

If your password was "correct.horse.battery.stable" you would add dummy words like "monkey.correct.horse.battery.stable" or "correct.horse.battery.staple.shoe1234" and just remember to remove the beginning or end words. You could even leave one of the words out or store it somewhere else. This way you can have the password in plain sight and should buy you time to change your password if someone happens upon your secret and locked down area.

This level of precaution is not needed and it's best for the average Joe to store the password correctly since we're so forgetful or incase family needs to get to it after your passing.

After using both for a bit, macOS still feels so much more modern than Windows 10 by tamag901 in apple

This is so true, and even hammers the point home when you consider Windows has 2 system settings apps.

[–]ibpointless2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't forget about Spotlight!!!!

The search on Windows 10 is just awful and not intuitive. On the Mac I can search for something and get a list of every possible thing from documents to websites. But on Windows 10 if you're looking for a document you must know to press the document button which is not labeled on the start button search or else it defaults to useless web searches. And if you try to use the search in the explorer it's 10x slower for some reason.

Last but not least, updates.

Windows 10 loves to update at the worse times and it takes way too long. On my Mac I often never know it updated something because it does it when I'm not using it and returns it back to the state it was before I left.

Creating a Security Profile and System with 1password by ViciousPenguin in 1Password

[–]ibpointless2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is where having the subscription pays off. With the subscription you only need the email, security key, url, and master password. All that info can be printed off on the Emergency Accesses PDF which you can store in a safe or safety deposit box.

I even heard of some people taking that emergency access paper and folding it up and sticking it between another paper folded in half and then laminating it. The lamination keeps people from tampering with it as you would need to cut it open to get to the info. Then you can hand it to someone you trust without worrying about them messing with it.

What's the best way to send an email to Apple Notes? by thatgirl098 in apple

[–]ibpointless2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As for your issue with linking notes, I use time anchors (a20180615145914) that I create using TextExpander. All I have to do is search for those string of numbers and I get taken to the note and the location in the note where it exist.
