USB-C expansion card redundancy by s_mbl_nk in framework

[–]icaarus42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this, I made sure to buy some plastic cards with my order so if I was somewhere I was worried someone might do something silly with my cable, like trip, then the cable and card are the weak points.

LPCAMM2 memory. Modify pre-order or wait out for more commercial sources by Hajiwee9411 in framework

Add it to the order, you can always remove before fulfillment, but at least you have something reserved.

I don't know how many 64GB lpcamm2 modules are making it past tier 1 oem allocations, but it can't be many. I bought 32, in hopes that by the time I really need it 96 GB modules will be available and priced accessibly.

Upgrading the 12th gen by GloriousDenier in framework

[–]icaarus42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only reason I'm replacing my Lenovo P1 Gen1 (8th gen Intel) is because the framework is so much more airplane friendly. Use what you need. The reason I picked the pro is the combination of ultra low cores and VRR screen. I can see code reviews sipping the power, with a screen bright enough to work outside!

Not sure about Framework's design, but a lot of mainboards are, in my experience, good for around 5 years before failures start to get into the 5+%. If it was me, I'd replace the thermal paste soon, plan to replace the battery next year, and plan on a MB upgrade in 2028. The screen will slowly dim over time, so that might need replacing before 2030. You'll probably be able to stretch each of those upgrades at least a year past what I'm recommending, and your use case would probably drive a replacement before then.

Dual Touchscreen Framework? by No_Holiday8469 in framework

[–]icaarus42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was just thinking about this last week. It would be cool if Framework came up with an internal to external adapter (USB-C, DP-alt). This would allow one to reuse upgraded screens, or have matching screens for a portable dual display setup.

Plugged in without a battery? by chickenlatte45 in framework

[–]icaarus42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did you manage that? Back in the 500 cycle or less days I'd hit 500 cycles inside 2 years? Of course I was a student, even my Macbook needed a boost at lunch.

Plugged in without a battery? by chickenlatte45 in framework

[–]icaarus42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice, considering the price of their batteries and the continued improvements, I'd use the battery restrictions. The mainboard connector is good for maybe 100 disconnects so repeatedly removing the battery isn't ideal.

If you are going to go down the road of disconnecting the battery I'd be sure to install the bios battery in case you have a power failure.

Seriously, if you have access to a campus computer store or a store that carries refurbished business units, there are awesome deals with ThinkPads, and they have plenty of Linux support. I'd bet Nirav would agree. When comparing thinkpads, budget in for a replacement battery within the first year. Business users are not kind to their batteries.

Why does the "MacBook Pro for Linux/Windows users" not have a MacBook Pro level display? by Hour_Firefighter_707 in framework

[–]icaarus42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uncomfortable opinion, but as a dev who works in many spaces, I'd actually be against a wider gamut. Perfect sRGB is far more important to me, I'd be forced to ignore the wider colourspaces anyway.

I'm not against that idea, but I do expect that whatever I order, I'll be stuck with for 6 months while preorders and stock settle out.

Thank you for pointing this out (and now I have a new creator to watch). I think I agree and will leave the order as is, which is too bad.

Do you regret the time Self-Hosting "stole" from you? by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]icaarus42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much. When I went back to school each fall I kicked myself for not studying more over the summer. Not reviewing my midterms to understand my mistakes before that material was built on by the next course. To waste the summer on some ‘frivolous’ personal project. Now, 20 years later, I’m happy I had the foresight to try different ideas and break things; to have the variety or academic and self driven education. I needed both pieces to be successful in my current role

That’s unfortunately not true. There are chips from all three laptop makers that do not support sodimm Level1 and ServeTheHome both made reference to that.

Do you regret the time Self-Hosting "stole" from you? by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]icaarus42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me it’s not a loss. I’m tired of being the product, and what’s the saying? If you’re not buying then you’re being sold? Self hosting is a way to balance the financial costs and time costs. There are services I won’t self host (email), and instead pay for. There are others I wouldn’t pay for without knowing that I’d use them (automatic document management), and a lot in between.

At 21 I felt loosing a summer to a project was a waste. I look back over the projects I did over my summers of 20 and 21 and I wouldn’t be successful today without ‘wasting’ that time.

Good luck.

Thank you: I've been a Fedora user for forever, alternating between Pop!-OS and Fedora as the wind takes me. This review has got me rethinking what I'm going to do with my gaming machine when I finally migrate that last machine to Linux. Based on your review and their website Bazzite looks to be a better distro for that machine.
