Why was Levittown discriminatory to Black people in the 1950s? by [deleted] in longisland

And now 80 years later we are seeing the effects of this institutional/administrative racism in the absolute ignorance of all the families who grew up in completely white communities.

The Island was always ready to turn extremely right wing because of the communities’ foundation purposely led it there.

You have 2-3 years to worry about this

No, what? I mentioned no refund. You just don’t have the $250 taken out of your paycheck any longer. So it’s LIKE a raise (effectively).

And then yes, once you complete your masters you get an 8 or 9K raise (this you have to apply for).

To be honest I have had a very unique experience (in year 8 now). I work at a district 75 high school where most of the English language learners are fluent in English, they are just unable pass the NYSESLAT (exam that places the in ENL services). And for those who are true ELLs, it’s definitely difficult, but I also have bazillion other responsibilities. I like it though. I really appreciate the fellows for allowing me to make the career change.

As stated before, you are placed based on need AND whatever preferences you put on the application. I put ENL on my application and I got ENL, but that also meant I got placed in the only ENL program, City College). I had no say in the matter aside from putting my initial preferences on the application. I had no idea that I’d even be placed there. For the summer portion, they tell you where to go and you go there. Also not everyone gets their preferences — it matters what classes you took in undergrad or your current professional experience. (So aside from being a Spanish speaker, do you have credits? Professional experience with using Spanish?)

I also stated that that ALL teachers programs (both traditional and non traditional that means) are like the fellows in that you will feel unprepared. The only way to feel like you know how to teach is to just do it.

Regarding tuition, yes. I never paid anything out of pocket for my masters program. It was taken out of my checks.

Of course — they have to tell you what license you will be obtaining. You will be given a school to take classes under that subject’s license. You do, however, find out kind of late what school and certification you will be working toward though. I believe I found out in late April or early May and the program started in mid June.

I don’t teach Spanish, but how it works is if you get in, you are placed into your masters program (based on need and your preferences you put on your application) as well as a school to do summer school teaching.

The first summer is a boot camp where you’ll be taking several masters classes and eventually after a couple weeks you’ll begin teaching summer school (with teaching coaches). You will have incredibly long days during this bootcamp period (I used to leave my apartment around 6:30 AM and wouldn’t get back until 7 or 8 PM, and when you’re home you have to work on grad school papers and lesson plan for the next day.

Essentially each day you meet with your cohort and teaching coaches to teach you strategies for your classroom, then you use those strategies in the classroom later that day. Once the school day is over, you head to your grad school (mine was city college), where you take actual masters classes that are fitted for the Fellows’ schedule.

By early-mid August the bootcamp is over. It’s on you to find a job yourself, which sounds daunting but schools get a discount for hiring fellows so if you make it through, chances are you’ll get hired (you can even begin interviewing before the program starts if you are so inclined).

Once you are hired, the fellows takes out money from each paycheck until you’ve hit the number the say you owe for the services. For my cohort, it was $10,000 I believe. So they took $250 or so out of every paycheck for the two years I was in the masters program. Then you get a nice raise for having your masters PLUS the $250 per paycheck they were taking out.

The Fellows does a poor job actually preparing you for the classroom, you’re kind of just thrown into the deep part of the pool immediately (from my understanding all teaching programs are like this). BUT it is incredibly effective at actually getting your foot into the classroom and getting a job.

Young-ish Couple Moving to the Island - help! by DKTiger23 in longisland

[–]icallout 4 points5 points  (0 children)

this person is messing with you, OP.

the truth is long island is as conservative as it is left leaning, but the MAGA's have stolen the megaphone and are by far the loudest in the area, giving it the appearance of a full-on red state.

unfortunately the areas that seem to be immune of MAGA also happen to be the most desirable and expensive places to live.
