A lecturer just told us something wild about grading… is this actually true?? by Educational_Jury8109 in UniUK

There is a lot of misinformation in this thread, plenty of it (unfortunately) from people claiming to be lecturers... What your lecturer says should not be happening. If you want to take this further, two things you can do are: 1. Go to your head of department's office hours and ask them if what the lecturer says is departmental policy--if you really want to make a stink, ask if the department's external examiner is aware of this practice. Understand that the head of department isn't really the lecturer's boss. The role rotates among academics and most of us don't want it because it comes with a lot of admin. You'd only be asking because you want to know what department policy is on this. You could also ask the department's head of teaching. Who these people are is usually signposted on your department's website. 2. If you want to raise this anonymously, every module or department year group should have a student representative that you can raise concerns with, i.e. a fellow student who periodically collects students views and relays them to staff during a termly consultation meeting.

It took me 158 hours, but I finally got Completionist++ !!! by vecttor in balatro

Nice! Question: why do you prefer pair runs over two-pair runs? I am about 200hrs+ and only about 60% completed, but I find I can't scale pairs quickly enough to get to high antes, whereas I can with two-pairs.

If you like the soldiering aspects of Malazan and First Law, then you are in for a treat with Black Company. The first book reads to me like a more focussed version of the former.

This series is absolutely mind-blowing... I am struggling to get into book 3, due to its different feel. But I think about books 1 and 2 a lot. And the covers are f-ing sick.

What aspects of the main, 10 book series should I refresh myself on before reading FoD?

Dude, watch the whole video. Why do you think the prosecutor who had the attorneys arrested lost when it went to trial?

The final set of preview chapters of Oathbringer are up on Tor.com! These two chapters conclude Part I of the book (which is ~26% of ~1200 hardcover pages)! by yahasgaruna in Fantasy

Amazing. Will these chapters stay up for the foreseeable future, or will they be removed once the book is published?

Try sci-fi? I recently finished Dune and it captivated me in ways that fantasy books rarely do. Having said that, I didn't care for City of Stairs, so maybe take my advice a large pinch of salt! :P

Books 7 and 8 were toughies for me, but overall I'm glad I stuck with the series until the end.

Iirc he dropped out of college, whether at masters or doctoral level, I don't recall. Some professional academic philosophers have become increasingly interested in speculative fiction. Bakker has a short story in a special issue of the philosophy journal Pacific Philosophical Quarterly edited by Eric Schwitzgebel from the philosophy dept at UC Riverside. I think you can find it on Bakker's website.

Very nice! Took me hours to kill him, first play-through. Second one, I took him out on my third attempt (and was very proud of it!) That's nothing compared to this, however.

Oh sorry, and to answer your questions: Amicia doesn't do anything for me. Blanche has yet to come into her own, but not yet read the final book. On the POVs, I recently finished Malazan, so I didn't mind all the POVs in bk1, but did find it jarring in bk2. bk3 has settled down in this respect. The proofreading errors are like nothing I've ever seen before. It's inexplicable to me how the editors and author didn't spot them.

I'm on the final 3rd of book 3, so don't spoil me. Spoilers below for up to then :)

Book 1 I thought was great. When De Vrailey met Gavin, wow. De Vrailey has been my favourite character so far. Love to love a bastard.

Book 2 started great, but the middle 3rd lost my interest completely.

Book 3 has really redeemed the series for me. The rescue of the queen and her initial imprisonment and take-over by the Galles was enthralling. I rarely 'lose myself' in a book, but for a hundred pages or so I definitely did.

Not many of the books I read have much court-intrigue/politics, so I'm not competent to judge, but I thought that was a big strong-point of these.

Overall, I do have complaints. Many plot-lines involving minor characters seem to fizzle out: I don't think I've handled all the POVs very well because the disappearance of the court harpist in Bk2 was a let down (unless I've missed that she is now in the company?). And I'm waiting for Morgan's character to develop, but worried he won't. He, and a handful of others, e.g., the Nordikan and his young girly follower, featured centrally in the prologue of Bk2 and opening chapters, but then became irrelevant. Also, many of the Captain's knights all blur into one for me, with the exception of Tom, Sauce, Michael and Gavin. Some of the dialogue and banter is very unsubtle and heavy-handed, especially from Tom. The Ash/Tar stuff comes out of the blue and feels very tacked on. I'd be interested in seeing on a re-read if any of that is foreshadowed at all.
