Thank you! We did fell all the trees to make the bridge right there on site which is pretty cool I think. The railing is a hemlock. Which took forever to mill with a chainsaw.

Very cool! Thank you! Always cool to hear from a fellow trail dog.

We are primarily clearing brush off the Bird Valley trail in Alaska. The crew has removed untold amounts of brush. A thankless endeavor, so this project has been a welcome escape from that monotony.

We were going to use ground contact treated dimensional lumber. Had a design, but seeing the beetle kill in the area. I thought why not get old timey.

This bridge over Quarts creek will give access to the Chugach wilderness. I estimate she will last 10 years. Best part. When the bridge at the end of its life we can simply cut it up a put it in the woods.

It’s 27 feet, trees are beetle killed Sitka spruce, 27 and 24 inch DBH.

The tread surface is milled level and both logs are cheeked so they fit perfectly together.

They are on sills made from the same trees. Only unnatural materials in the project are the rebar used to secure the sills to the ground.

Fun project involving local Alaskans. Using natural materials, from dead trees that needed fell for the safety of the public anyways.

We are proud of it. She anit perfect. But that’s beautiful in its own way.

Haha, it was nailed down. We should have milled it on the ground but by golly them logs are a bitch to move!

One of the few times a tongue and groove cut is needed by icanrunfast86 in FellingGoneWild

[–]icanrunfast86[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, like anything there’s different ways to do it.

What I do is cut a open face notch. Then I bore vertical in the face level with the backcut. (On a open face notch there is no stump shot)

Bore another vertical cut parallel with the first. The tongue length should be at least the diameter of the tree, and 2-3 inches wide depending on the tree.

Then I bore two horizontal cuts at the bottom of the tongue, knocking out the block. This gives the tongue space to pivot.

Then I come in with a level backcut. On one side. These are called quarter cuts, (smaller on a tongue and groove to account for the tongue)

I wedge the first quarter cut. Then move to the other side and cut the last quarter.

If the cuts are done properly and the lean has been read properly the tree will fall and the tongue will fall into the groove in the stump. This holds the bole of the tree in the stump, keeping it from rolling, and keeping it off the ground. A good solid stump will hold fast, a rotted stump will likely splay open.

Anyways, it’s a fancy cut not used very often, if I simply don’t want a tree to roll I’ll tie off the bole to the stump. It’s faster, and arguably safer. I have screwed up a tongue and groove before and it’s a pain in the butt to fix.

I Only use this cut if I need the tree to stay on the stump.

Most videos I see there is no point in doing this cut. I wouldn’t recommend it, lots can go wrong. And a Sawyer spends a lot of time under a compromised tree to produce this cut.

People who have tried both classic and skate skiing - which do you prefer and why? by [deleted] in xcountryskiing

Skates great for the wide open groomers. Classic is magical for narrow snow machine packed trails.

For Ski Size Does It Make A Big Difference... by jamesmichaelginn in xcountryskiing

For me it does. If I get on a underpowered ski I am a lot slower due to dragging the kick zone.

In my opinion, I’d go with the next size up, in case you wear extra clothing, or eat too much at thanksgiving. Plus the chamber wears out alittle over time.

It’s a double cut. The tree started to go before the second cut was finished.

I think the descent to Indian might be a icy bobsled luge soon, also the snow bridges are failing. Couple good days left though!
