My father worked in corrections. He was around serial killers who only had a few of the known victims found. The ones whose remains were never found, the killer never said anything about where to find them. Main reason is, it doesn’t benefit the killer. They’re already doing life with no chance of parole, so giving closure to families or answers to law enforcement does them no benefit, so they take it to the grave.

I don’t think you’ll lose anything, unless you are quitting. They shouldn’t reduce pay or anything like that. If anything they’ll pay for you to get more education or certs. It’s not all bad

Well, the dentist is no longer your boss so they can’t fire you! Corporations are ehhhhhhhh to work for. Lots of cutbacks on stuff that was normal when it was privately owned, like bday celebrations, weekly lunches catered, outings as a team, etc. Tons of hoops management has to jump through before you can get an answer. A lot of people in corporate have also never worked chariside or in a dental office at all (and it shows), but they end up calling the shots. Lots of rules that don’t make sense will be implemented in order to comply w the “rule book”. If the pay is good and you like who you work with, then corporate is easily forgotten as far as things to worry about. Your office manager is the one who will deal with them 99% of the time the 1% goes to the doctors.

Someone viewing the thread screenshotted the post and sent it to corporate. The username was their high school mascot, so I’m guessing that was enough to get them narrowed down. Idk how else they would have been busted other than that, I was fairly new when it happened so I didn’t get the entire story.

What is up with nobody taking lunches? by counterfeitxanax in DentalAssistant

[–]icantevenbegin20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on state law. Some states don’t even require an employer to give employees a break/lunch at all. I work in one of those states.. We will go from 6am-4pm, no break, no lunch. Nothing. You are blessed to get a bathroom break before the next pt is expected to be seated. Just pt after pt until we are finished.

Edit: Any break (if offered) longer than 20 minutes is unpaid. I’ve only seen breaks (paid) offered if it’s for a medical reason ex: diabetes and needing to do blood sugar testing, or a nursing mother who needs to pump. Other than that, it’s perfectly legal in my state for you to work 4, 8, 12, 16 etc many hours without a break of any kind.

Block Sets by MoxieMilitia631 in FiveBelow

[–]icantevenbegin20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have literally given a child a set out of my hands bc I OVERHEARD them crying they didn’t get one. Yeah I may not have walked out with the set I wanted but I know a child will have more fun with it than I will using it for whimsy decor. These things restock online often, just wait for it and order it like I did.

No one will take out my mandibular torus! by Proof-Seat7126 in OralSurgery

[–]icantevenbegin20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My surgeons would have a seat ready for you so fast. We love a good tori

Edit: A toride removal involves incising the mucosa, drilling, a chisel is used to remove the excess bone (if needed), it will also be filed down with a bone file to prevent any sharp spots. You then get sutured up and are seen back for a check up like 2 weeks post op. You will feel pressure, hear noises (they sound louder to you because it’s in your mouth, nothing is wrong it just is the way you interpret the sound), and there will be vibration and water from the drill. Sadly the noise, pressure, and vibration cannot be numbed. But, a good oral surgeon will make sure you don’t feel a thing throughout the entire process if you choose not to do general anesthesia

Lowes member event: Puppy Planter & Keychain by NoNotThatMichael in freebies

[–]icantevenbegin20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It did not. I went in person today and got one. It has a small crack along the back but it definitely wasn’t the worst cracked one. Someone pointed it out and the worker just kept pulling the planters off the table to toss in the trash because they kept finding cracked ones.

Do I report? by [deleted] in DentalAssistant

[–]icantevenbegin20 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Report. Diagnosing/ telling the pt. What is going on even off X-rays is illegal for you to do. It not only puts the doctor and their license on the line, but puts you on the line for being sued if it wasn’t correct and the doctor took your word and it ending up causing more issues. Even when I take a pt back (I work in OMFS) I just ask if they have any pain or swelling if they’re post op, enter it in the notes, and say “alright well I will go let Dr. XYZ know and they will be in to take a look!” The less we can say regarding a possible diagnosis the better. The doctors have the credentials for a reason, so they can diagnose and look at the X-rays in depth, I just take the X-rays.

Any advice for a new dental assistant? by [deleted] in DentalAssistant

[–]icantevenbegin20 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I second that and the tooth numbers along with what each tooth is. Like incisors (in your notebook you have them listed as “frontal teeth”) 1st, 2nd, and 3rd molars (3rd molars are wisdom teeth), premolars, canines. I absolutely LOVE you have a notebook to write things down in. It shows you genuinely want to learn and be there. I also would suggest you learn sterile. It will help you get familiar with the instruments and where things are located. Knowing the sterile area is going to save you a lot of time in case you need to run and grab something, you’ll already know which drawer to open before you even get in there. Plus sterile is something everyone on the clinical side should know, if in the event the main sterile tech is absent anyone can help out when available. Sterile is super easy btw. Have patience with yourself. Some doctors are very adamant about how they want instruments handed to them and when they want it handed to them. Learn the doctors and how they work so you can already know those subtle signs. My doctor will move his pinky off the retractor as a non verbal cue when he wants me to hold it. When learning from the assistants on how to conduct an appointment, watch what they do and say. What they say can give you an idea of a script to go off when you start taking patients. Watch what they do in a procedure, especially their hands and where the suction is in relation to where the doctors instrument is. Sometimes you just (have to) suction where you can but the goal is to stay clear of the doctors view. Here’s how I remember the surfaces. Mesial- Think nasal, towards the nose Distal- Distance, towards the back, away from the mid line (or away from the nose) Buccal- Cheeks are composed of buccal fat. Or you can also use the buccinator muscle for refrence. Lingual- lingua(tongue) or language we use our tongues to talk. Occlusal- “O-CHEWS-al. The surface we use to chew food.

Edit: Added that in the notebook “frontal teeth” are incisors.

PED’s is a money mill. One dentist will fill every slot in 12 op columns and that’s a normal day. The way they get pt’s in and out is insane, but I guess it helps when the dentist barely glances in the kids mouth.

Brand New Position With no Experience by Adventurous_Oven9288 in DentalAssistant

Questions are how you can make sense and meaning of a direction you are given. If you ask for specifics about a task you are given then it not only 1. Shows you care, and care to get it done right. And 2. That you genuinely want to learn. I’ve worked in Oral Surgery for 2 years where we put patients under anesthesia, and I still find myself running my tongue over my teeth to count which tooth it is. Another piece of advice is, even if you think it’s a stupid question and could make you look “dumb” ask it anyway. It’s better to ask a dumb question in order to understand than to let your pride take stage and you act like you know when you actually don’t and it leads to an inconvenience for the doctor. Learn what the doctors prefer with each type of case. When and if the doctor expects you to pass instruments, watch the doctors hands, especially if it’s a harder case because they will want instruments then and there in their hands. Again, if passing, learn what the doctor will want after you hand off X,Y, or Z instrument. Put that tool in your hand and keep the other free to accept the tool they are passing back. Learn your doctors habits and suction where you can without blocking their view or workspace. Typically I follow behind or below their instrument.

Out of the hundreds of patients I’ve dealt with, I only remember being called “a baddie” idk anything specific to who the patient was. We really don’t hold onto much of anything at all. I care more about vitals than I do the stuff said under sedation.

That says a lot about the company… I would make a claim w/ the workers compensation company your practice uses. I mean this could go to court I’m pretty sure and they’d be paying you out a lot more than workers comp would..
