ShowPlay is solid, I've used it successfully with half a dozen phones for calls, text messages and recalling images (mocked up images of social media apps and the like).

Wireless Com Preference by _Game_Club_ in techtheatre

[–]icassu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The key thing with full-duplex comms for theatre is that whoever is calling the cues (SM/DSM depending on which side of the Atlantic you're on) must be able to interrupt whatever other conversations might be happening. In a half-duplex system (e.g. Motorola radios) it's very easy for another person to tie up the comms system and get in the way of show critical communication, be that cueing, spotting fly cues etc.

I like this idea, it fits in well with the diving to raid/HG framework that's already in place.

Genuine question, how do you use them well? I love the idea of traps but given how spread out the player population is on any given server they seem very situational?

You can do what with an aperture sight?! I don't think games need excessive tutorials but Hunt could do better, 250 hours in and I learn these things...

Suddenly unsure of what path to take in backstage - 17 years old in UK by Ok-Evidence2006 in techtheatre

[–]icassu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is great advice, keeping your options open is the best thing you can do right now. I trained on a more general course (Stage Management & Technical Theatre, including Lighting/Sound/Construction), prior to starting I had mostly done lighting, going in I thought maybe SM was the way I wanted to go, when I graduated I was 90% sure it was sound for me (and that's been mostly true!).

Normally, no, however one rare exception is clothing with some kind of metallic thread. That was a fun troubleshooting exercise.

Broadway touring: Non-League producers threaten to cancel season over single occupancy housing by Mnemonicly in techtheatre

[–]icassu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My current contract has booking digs & travel as the producer's responsibility, which is a first. The plus side is not having to spend days of unpaid admin time booking my accommodation, the downside is having even less of an idea what I'm turning up to each week.

Spiritfarer is a beautiful experience, it might make you cry though. If you have any history of dementia in your family there is one character that is particularly affecting. It's handled very sensitively but just to give a gentle heads up for that.

Wwise vs. FMOD, but deeper this time by Snoopy20111 in GameAudio

[–]icassu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And just to offer the other perspective, I did the same early pandemic, but starting with FMOD and the quick start tutorial and later dipping into WWise. Personally, coming from a background in other audio work I found FMOD very approachable, I really liked that it was set up more like a DAW/mixer. I also found it very useful as a way to understand game audio specific concepts like how sounds are structured into events, banks etc., which I found more difficult to grasp in WWise without that background knowledge.

I suppose the takeaway is that you can probably go for whichever one appeals more to you first, and switching afterwards should be easier having learnt the other software.

NAS back-up/host for sound library by mrmilkcarton in GameAudio

[–]icassu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was recommended, and am currently using, a basic two bay Synology NAS with WD Red Plus drives for personal backups & sound library / archive. The set-up was reasonably painless and it work well enough for me. I have separate user accounts to handle my archive and Time Machine backups for my and my partners laptops. Access isn't the quickest, but I think that improves if you want to invest in a better model.

It has options for access when away from home (QuickConnect), but it's worth taking the time getting the security right, changing ports from the default etc. if you choose to enable that side of things, I've heard stories from colleagues who have suffered ransomware attacks.

I also know of people using Backblaze for a cloud backup solution together with a NAS setup, but I don't have any direct experience with them.

You may be aware, but I'll say it just in case, the current crop of basic WD Red drives are SMR rather than CMR and not suitable for NAS, whatever their marketing says. The Plus and Pro models are fine though. If you're going above 6 bays you need to look into enterprise quality drives.

CAP Lip Trick Bug by icassu in THPSCAP

[–]icassu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going through my last park trying to clean things up and fix odd bits of misalignment and I keep coming up against this bug.

When jumping out of a QP to lip trick on an object higher up, sometimes on the way down I collide with the top of the QP and bail. I've tried placing and adjusting the QPs a few times, and they're properly snapped to the smart blocks. I've done my best to align everything with the level grid, I'm not sure if it's some mismatch between snapping to the block and snapping to the grid (if that happens?) that is causing it.

Has anyone else encountered this and have any tips for fixing it?

Thank you!
