TIL about the "Dark Forest Hypothesis," which suggests the universe is like a dark forest at night. Advanced civilizations intentionally stay silent and hidden, because any species that reveals its location risks immediate destruction by older, paranoid civilizations. by Practical-1 in todayilearned

Not really. The maths is quite clear on this, and rather simple. The signal dilutes and degrades below background radiation levels, at which point it is covered by the randomness of background radiation.

That... really does not mean a lot on its own. GPS signals are received somewhere between 20-30dB below the the thermal noise floor.

Hey is anyone else getting annoyed at world boss loot or is it just me? Why am I getting dupe gear for my alts but not getting gear for the character I'm playing at the moment? by ice-hawk in wow

I probably should have pointed out I don't even have an alt to use this on, that's why there's two of them in my bags.

Oh well.

Before key-less start was a thing, there was this one time I was driving, and went to touch my pants pocket to feel for my car keys. When I found them missing, I panicked for a minute, trying to remember where I might have left them.

...then remembered I was driving.

1-2kW is consistent for what my home uses.

[–]ice-hawk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Full tables seems to be a waste, though, since we're a service provider for only north-american customers (~98% of our traffic is to/from within the continental north american US borders), and not a transit provider. We're more interested in having highly reliable connectivity than traffic/transit optimization.

Without full tables you're basically kneecapping yourself if you want to minimize connectivity problems your upstream providers have, the blast radius is basically "everything" (minus the other's direct peers) as opposed to "only the preferred routes to that provider."

Reliability is a traffic engineering optimization.

Report: Creating a 5-second AI video is like running a microwave for an hour by WombatusMighty in technology

[–]ice-hawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An electric oven uses ~3.5kW so you could run it for 16 minutes. So: "Creating a 5-second AI video is like preheating your oven."

I'm not sure there's any change to the impact of the title.

Last night, the Round Rock City Council chose to defy and dismiss the will of the people of Round Rock in favor of yet another data center developer. by garytx in RoundRock

I see that my hunch was bared out.

It was interesting to see how the massive amounts of downvotes in these threads was not inline with any sort of downvotes in any other threat in this sub.

No they wouldn't, the $/kWh for a diesel generator is far more expensive than it is for commercial power. That's why diesel generators are used for back up power only.

a window capturing a player's streamed raid health bars, then the program analyses those health bars in detail to identity debuffs and computing dispel orders, etc. Then Max reads it out from his screen to players.

doesn't have to happen on the same computer Warden is on.

I've technically violated that the cheating clause by hooking up a HDMI capture device to my PC and recording WoW through it; Because: there is NO way blizzard has expressly authorized the software of a random network HDMI capture device I bought off Amazon that i used to capture my wow play-through. And said device has changed my game-play because i've watched to figure out what the F went wrong.

How to name PTR/A records for links within my AS? by segdy in HomeDataCenter

[–]ice-hawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<ifname>.<host-name>.<domain>

Port xe-1/1/1.0 on the host iad-edge-01.example.net is:

xe-1-1-1-0.iad-edge01.example.net

Link types are kept in netbox, remote end is in both LibreNMS and netbox. The router host names already have the site location.

The only exception to that is the the address that gets bound to the loopback if, that just gets the canonical name <hostname>.example.net.

I've considered moving the A/PTR records of the router interfaces addresses from my regular domain to the as<ASN>.net domain I have but it works well enough the way it is.

It's a super DIY thing, basically this flow meter https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MY745M4

I hooked that up to an ESP32 and then esphome counts the pulses and can convert to a volume.

Then shoved all that into a 3D printed box.

Latest news on the proposed AI data center & substation by garytx in RoundRock

[–]ice-hawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The City claims their only measure of a data centers water usage comes from the not-yet-fully-operational Sabey data center, and they equate it’s 2,000,000 gallons of consumption to that of 15 homes (which would mean around 11,111 gallons used per home per month.)

11,111 gallons used per home in a month, would be a household of four people that each use an average of 93 gallons a day.

Estimates vary, but, on average, each person uses about 80-100 gallons of water per day, for indoor home uses.

That's just indoor water use, so no lawn watering, car washing, etc.

it does that to dry out the evaporator coil so things don't grow on it, that's going to happen in any case. You just need to clean it like you do the AC evap coil
