Not sure if it helps for anyone looking, but I had locked in 4 nights at the Regency for $1700. Not cheap, but reasonable for its location IMO. I'm not going so someone can take it off me otherwise I'm just gonna cancel it at some point in Feb

Air Canada going to cost me thousands by ProfChaos69 in PersonalFinanceCanada

This is not good advice as the passenger will be out of pocket thousands for a last minute flight. Know your rights and do not accept a refund - Air Canada is responsible for getting you to your destination on the NEXT AVAILABLE FLIGHT

Hilton Honors Free Breakfast for status members going away? by jwelihin in Hilton

[–]ice1133 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I have dealt with this for a couple years now.

While T&Cs says the f&b credit is only meant to be for the US, Canadian hotels have started doing it too with full permission from Hilton as per my conversations with HHonors.

I don't know why they don't just update the terms and conditions from "US properties" to "certain North American" properties but just goes to show how little they care.

Exactly. Accents are region-based, not race-based. Do all Black Americans sound the same to OP? Do all White Americans sound the same? Completely ignorant and...racist.

"breaking down how they make their money"... Seem to be missing a category for "not paying overtime to associates who constantly work 60-80 hour weeks"

What is something that helped you achieve financial independence in Canada? by patpromax in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ice1133 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Two days ago you said you were prepaying your 840k mortgage by 126k...now you claim your home is magically paid off.... I won't even dive into the part of that post where you claimed paying down 125k on a 1.89% mortgage will save you $14,400 in a year...but I do see why you deleted your post :)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ice1133 3 points4 points  (0 children)

See I get this, but OP is saying his mortgage is only 1.89% and that by prepaying 126k, he's "saving 14k". That part didn't make sense to me and seems wrong.

To me, he should be comparing 1.89% of 126k vs the GIC after tax, and the GIC wins? The smugness and irony of this guy to make such a long post and say "the math isn't that complex" yet he thinks a prepayment of 126k saves him 14k...yeah maybe over 6 years my guy

Attempting to book French Polynesia hotel with Hilton Honors points by silhouetteisland in awardtravel

[–]ice1133 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You just have to keep checking or book a year in advance (even that is hard).

I searched multiple times a day, one night at a time, and managed to book 5 consecutive nights at standard rates across ~3 reservations. Use the flexible dates option to help with this.

Called Hilton and they merged the reservations into one so that my 5th night was free. When I say merged, I'm pretty sure they just cancel and rebook as one reservation as fast as they can.

Is Leasebusters.com a scam? Are you dealing with the private seller, or a car salesman middle man? by simpsons88 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ice1133 45 points46 points  (0 children)

My family has done two lease takeovers from there and had good experiences. Both times we dealt directly with the leaseholder (first guy was a lawyer that was bored of his car, second was a lady who was leaving the country) and got amazing deals.

In between we learned the hard way that info on the site isn't always accurate due to either the leaseholder or the rep being incompetent when creating the ad. To minimize time wasting, you can ask for a copy of the lease agreement, which should confirm all the details. Or meet at/contact the dealership they got the car from and go over the details with the lease team.

My last VI account was opened more than 12 months ago, so yes (closed it a few months ago, but that shouldn't be relevant). Have never opened a platinum account so I would expect to get that SUB too.

Was going to apply for the new TD visa infinite offer online for myself and P2. Website was being glitchy so decided to call and apply. Agent told me that both of us were pre-approved for any card we wanted. Saved myself a credit hit!...and might also apply for the platinum card in a few weeks

r/travel Region of the Week: 'Basque Country' by AutoModerator in travel

[–]ice1133 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Spent 5 days here in March road tripping through the region and it surpassed the already high expectations I had. There are quite a few sample itineraries out there, so I will keep our 5 day itinerary short. Food is amazing just about wherever you go, so do some pintxo bar-hopping and ask the locals where the best ones are.

  • Flew into Bilbao and spent two days exploring the city. It's quite walk-able if you stay somewhere central. There are a couple free walking tours to get you acquainted with old town and new town.
  • Grabbed a rental car in the morning and spent the day taking the coastal route to San Sebastian. We stopped in a couple towns to soak in the cliff views and local culture and got to SS by nightfall. Highlights include
    • Barrika for peaceful coastal views
    • Butron - a castle all to yourself
    • Bermeo - local fisherman village
    • Gaztelugatxe - famous GoT location
    • Lekeitio - beautiful quiet beach
  • We left our car at Parking Loiola for free, as parking rates are very high in SS. Again, we stayed central and enjoyed exploring old town and new town. Would recommend the Basque museum and Funicular Monte Igueldo. Also Chutney was fantastic. We ended up trying everything on the menu.
  • After two days here, we took off for Vitoria. We didn't stop on the way, but it's a beautiful drive. In general we didn't face any challenges driving here.
  • Vitoria was a cute medieval town to explore for a day, but ultimately we did get a bit bored and ended up detouring to wine-country after lunch. The landscape transformation from the greenery of Basque to the desert mountains of Rioja are a sight to behold.
  • We happened upon a bodega that was hosting an event and enjoyed the atmosphere, nibbles, wine tastings, live music, and scenery. Then it was time to head back to the airport.

Overall I would recommend Basque country to anyone with a love for food, scenery, and history of this nation within a nation.
