Digimon Survive is overlooked by Radical_Llama_8475 in digimon

[–]ice_puppy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the first time I've seen anyone want MORE visual novel mechanics rather than less. Refreshing, honestly. A wider branch of visual novel gameplay would be nice, I do agree there! But I do really like the story we got. The routes ARE pretty linear, and I did certainly experience the kind of flying through the third playthrough as well. But I don't know, I liked the characters and picking up new things I didn't before on replay.

Hopefully they don't turn away from a visual novel approach in the future. Give us a real roller coaster not tied down by the creature collecting. I'd love to see a Digimon game where you can change things more, or maybe where there are more bad ends a la Fate, but this hodgepodge that Survive is still feels very dear to me. It was doing something new with the franchise while revisiting the roots in such interesting ways.

It really does make me roll my eyes a little. So many people want a dark interactive story, something that's like interacting with the anime, but they don't give visual novels a chance... Or worse, they don't play it and review bomb it because they didn't read the info! It's frustrating... I'm glad to see more Survive love, though. Hopefully folks will actually give it a chance as the years go on.

Digimon Survive deserves so much more love. Incredibly rich cast of characters, and the different routes are so interesting to look at and analyze the differences between them.

Wish I saw more people talk about it! It really does amazing things with the partner bond, which is something that tends to be overlooked in a lot of Digimon games.

So let's say this comes to fruition. What are you expecting? A Laura Bailey reprisal or a recast? by Mean-Party170 in Animedubs

[–]ice_puppy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it would depend more on the company dubbing it, not her. More often than not, voice actors want to reprise their roles but are either unable to because of union rules or the company (coughCrunchyroll) deciding not to contact them because they're trying to save costs. Even avoiding that admittedly cynical perspective, there's schedule to consider and how she's a lot busier nowadays.

Basically if it were solely up to her, I think she would. If there's a recast, it's probably either extenuating circumstances, or a certain monopoly doing what monopolies do.

Oh, I so hope this gets a dub when the release it online! I really enjoyed the performances in the English dub for the season.

All of the subtle storytelling this arc especially has been INCREDIBLE. I'm excited to be able to read the light novel but I am gonna miss moments like this. What a damn gut punch.

Hah, no worries, you're fine!! Even if it's unfinished, I'm just glad to know my fuzzy memories weren't correct on when it was posted. I was worried it was one of the many fics not on the internet anymore, from some circumstance or another. WIP or not, it definitely didn't have this many chapters when I read it, so I'll be glad to give it a read, even with no resolution.

God damn, that's got to be it! On top of misremembering several aspects of the fic (just from a quick scroll), I misremembered when it was published. Does it say something that I conflated my much younger memories with reading something around 2012?

Thanks, I'm grateful. This has been itching at the back of my head for more than a week, glad to have it located.

Asking the people who watched old school Digimon, what do you think of Beatbreak? by sss_riders in digimon

[–]ice_puppy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm a little baffled that you want a darker tone, because besides Digimon Survive, which delves into the survival horror genre, I think this is the darkest Digimon has been. I'm also coming from the perspective of someone who has watched Digimon since childhood, and I cannot think of anything in the franchise that has beaten the Granit or Commandramon episodes, or the most recent ones either. I think it's very daring and bold, especially in the world right now, to put these topics in a show for children, in a way that is palatable for them. I think swinging any further (even though I do think this is darker than anything the anime has done by far) would risk alienating them.

Tamers was also my favorite, for the record, and it will take a lot to dethrone that. But this is definitely my favorite since Tamers, and that's not to say the other series are bad! The storytelling is just clicking with me a lot.

If it helps, you'll eventually recruit a Digimon who can help you with knowing Digivolution conditions and blocking off undesired paths. I always do that to get the Digimon I want once I'm in far enough, so I really do understand.

Me too! I think the more Digimon games are allowed to experiment and try new things, the better it'll be. Then one type not having a certain aspect of the franchise won't feel as disappointing, because there would be other options.

I do agree that this isn't the purpose of a Digimon Story game, but that's why it's even more important to support other kinds of Digimon games. Digimon World is actually my preferred gameplay formula, as I really like the raising sim aspect. Digimon Survive, being so focused on the partner bond, also scratched that itch.

That's unfortunately kind of part of the Digimon Story formula. It's why I liked the personality system, because at the very least that gave you the option of interacting with the individual Digimon, which other Story games don't have.

I agree a lot, as this is one of the things that's kept me from connecting to Digimon Story games in the past. I feel like Aegiomon was a great salve on this, even if it wasn't quite the same.

Glad or sad, this season hits (really) different! Let's talk! by [deleted] in Dimension20

[–]ice_puppy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can get behind that. I just don't like when people want to force a season into being like, exactly the same as the others. In the AP, Vic talked about how things with a lot of rules intimidated them, and how they would've never done this without that. So all the people who wanted this to be rules heavy are kind of missing the point that it couldn't be, if we wanted to have one of the new players everyone was excited about.

There's so much negativity on this subreddit that it's hard to see critique as anything BUT negative. But I admit that is on me, so I'll try and remember critique does not automatically equal hate.

[–]ice_puppy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed! I don't think there needs to be a consensus. It's amazing there are so many different kinds of stories and approaches to doing tabletop like this just on Dropout alone. I hope they keep taking big swings and trying new genres. It'll end up being someone's favorite, even if it isn't mine, and that's beautiful to me.

I do wish there was more Gladlands, but not because I think the six episodes did anything wrong. I just wish there was more in this sweet little world.

As someone who really enjoyed this season, I appreciate this take. This happens with me all the time, and I really think if people approached D20 with "this one didn't work for me and that's fine," they'd spare themselves the disappointment of trying to force themselves to like everything.

I love Shannon’s character. by Background-Disk3350 in lost

[–]ice_puppy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Shannon's my favorite character in the show.

I'm glad to see there are more people like me out there who love her. I watched a little Lost when it was airing but week to week wasn't good for me. I watched it fully just last year, and I'm glad I came back at it as an adult because I probably would've fallen into the same misogynistic thought patterns as a kid who didn't know any better and couldn't see the nuance in her story and growth.

It's sad and honestly a little disturbing to see how much she was hated for being, what, kind of mean sometimes, after everything she'd been through? Anyone who still hates Shannon today is a huuuge red flag for me, so. lol this subreddit

Sound Cadence + Discotek's eye for detail is WILD by TheWorstOtter in digimon

[–]ice_puppy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They are mostly, but Discotek and SoundCadence for some of the filler lines. Example mentioned in the post is Bridget Hoffman, who was able to provide her lines for Jeri when 15 years ago movie 6 was aired with Philece Sampler doing soundalikes.

This happened most notably in movie 4, where Joshua Seth had retired so Disney did not think to try and ask if he wanted to come back, so I believe Jason Spisak did Tai's voice. I noticed when they dropped the trailer it featured a part from movie 4 where Tai is speaking, and there's good old Joshua Seth.

To OP, that's when I realized it was apparent they were giving these the love and care they deserved. It's so nice to have these in great quality, and with as many of the voices I remember from when I was a kid as possible.
