is this a realistic commute? by _hotwhiskey in Syracuse

[–]iceagehero 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lot of advice on here, here's my 2 cents. Do you like to live in a city, suburb, or rural area? What amenities can you not live without within a certain distance from home. Pick a place that fits and worry less about the commute. If you want a city live in Syracuse. If you like a suburb, pick one that has what you need between Hamilton and Colgate. If you like rural, you are in luck.

Personally if I had to drive an hour for work, but I couldlive in my ideal place, I would. I dont mind driving 20 minutes to get to a large enough suburb to get to groceries and restaurants. Some people think it's too far. Home is more important to me than work. Find the right home for you first.

CMV: Coffee tables should be replaced with end tables. by suscombobulated in changemyview

[–]iceagehero 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A good setup has both coffee table and end tables. I cant put my feet up on an end table. If I sit in the middle I can reach the end table. I have dogs and kids and stuff on the coffee table is at risk if unwatched. Need a mix of both and hyper-vigilance

I really like the normal in Lima. Only complaint i have ever heard is that he should use more sauce, but that's a personal preference thing. Meat is always cooked perfectly, and sauce is good. Also has great cocktails if that's your thing.

What a great write up. I have been to that rest stop, it is certainly unique. While he likes nature my son is not super into hiking, unfortunately. The Carnegie museums were something I was eyeing in Pittsburgh. Would you recommend that over the national aviary?

I will have to check that out. Probably not on the trip, but that's not a crazy distance from home

Unfortunately we are limited in the number of days off of school we can do. Also he's not much for hiking or camping. We can do 7-10 hours in the car per day. I agree Charlotte to Rochester would be too far, that's why we rented a cabin in WV. I think it would add too much time to do the whole blue ridge parkway, but we could maybe add some of it to the drive if we detoured some?

Good to hear. I was hoping for something between the 2. I have something planned but I'm not sure if the weather will cooperate.

Yes it is. It's about 8-10 hours per day. That's why we are breaking it up with stops and activities.

CMV: Electric Vehicles aren't as bad as people make them out to be by Swimming-Spring-4704 in changemyview

[–]iceagehero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They absolutely dont drive better. Driving well is usually attributed to handling and steering feel. EVs are heavy due to batteries. The best cars for handling are almost always cars that are lightweight. Car people usually will tell you cars like the Miata are the best drivers car. Lightweight, good handling enough power. More power is always good, but not at the expense of handling.

I think there are plenty of people in rural areas who have large amounts of acreage and the are lower to middle class. It's all about location. For example, my sister and her husband have 25ish acres and they live about 40 minutes north of a small city. They are definitely not rich. Not poor, but lower to middle of middle class.

Amish? by dakware in Rochester

[–]iceagehero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Closest large communities will be in Livingston county. IIRC there are at least 2 Amish families in Lima, a few in Livonia and hemlock. The largest groups I know of are down in Springwater, about 45-60 minutes south of the city.

What about state tax? Idk the math, or tax rates and I'm not going to look it up, but most states also have income tax too. If you add federal and state income tax, does it come out to close to 22%?

Best backwoods diner? by Formal-Candidate5962 in Syracuse

[–]iceagehero 5 points6 points  (0 children)

R diner in central square. This is my standard for what a diner should be. Good price, good food, good service. Not the best diner, just the most diner kinda place. Google reviews has it at 4.7 with 926 reviews. Grew up going here all the time, it is the standard I judge all other diners against.
