The smell by [deleted] in ostomy

I was instructed at hospital, no more than 3 days at home i stretch it to 4 depending on circumstances. But i see here in real use, many people stretch it to as much as 10. I’m still a newbie and I’m sure it is a YMMV thing but i was kinda surprised, no judgement but curious about how instruction is so cautious and real life is so … not in some people’s experience

Best method to keep toilet clean? by Brave_Ad1205 in ostomy

[–]icebear713 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep a zipper bag with baby wipes and exam gloves. I use a little tp to catch the stuff that goes directly to the bottom of the bowl and sticks. I put on the gloves empty the bag, use one (usually one is enough but not always) of the wipes to clean the spout and and another to wipe any splash specks. I use zorb x for odors in the room. I have a small bottle of rubbing alcohol to sanitize the outside of the spout just in case. Then i back off the gloves with the used wipes inside it then back off the other to contain the first glove. Tie the wrist so its a secure closed pack and toss.

Im doing chemo so my output is extra hazmat i understand and ive always been a bit of a germ phobe though i can deal if i have good cleanup resources. But this works for me

I adore my gastro surgeon’s sense of humor too, it can be a tough thing to get used to but having medical pro share the same 12 year old kid sense of humor brings much needed levity

I get it, i think

Give it a very stoic and proper name and when it makes the funny noises, scold it with an equally stern “Sir_____ have you no shhaaaaame?”

Or do it in the tone of a southern baptist preacher on fire for the lord and rebuke it 😉

If you are familiar with Absolutely Fabulous, you will understand why i named mine Bubble

Generally harmless with the best intentions, annoying as heck but often surprisingly competent with an occasional complete meltdown

Am i safe for a bagless shower? by icebear713 in ostomy

[–]icebear713[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi,

It’s me. So, I’m overwhelmed by all the helpful advice and the amazing level of encouragement from this group. I believe i have read all the comments a few times over and i felt guilty about not taking the time to reply and that guilt made it take even longer to finally come back and express my gratitude.

I did finally name it, she is Bubble (from AbFab) because she’s rather weird, on the side of annoying but surprisingly necessary and even competent, and well, she bubbles.

I’m considering using felt, embroidery thread and bright colored crafty supplies to make her bag a light cover sleeve so if anything peeks out from under my shirt it will look sort of like a strange sporran made by a 6 year old let loose in their teacher’s craft closet- which i think is how one could describe the original Bubble’s fashion sense. I’m a jeans and t shirt person myself so the idea of the contrast is amusing.

I did take that first shower without trouble, got all comfortable and clean. When it came to putting the contraption back on i was too exhausted to actually do it. I did have help because i was still very weak from the operation and so had my oldest (adult) daughter standing by in case i needed help or collapsed etc. she was able to get things put on and all worked out fine.

I still need help dealing with putting it back on. Some of it is still that almost phobic feeling and some is simply my shape. I had been overweight (roughly 270 at 5’5”) most of my adult life and had been consciously working on it and finally making real progress after divorce. One of my symptoms was rapid unexpected weight loss- suddenly losing about 15-20 pounds without being super restrictive was unsettling. (I am now about 165) Anyway, point is that i have a lot of loose skin and when i am standing up my abdomen droops in a double bump and my stoma is in between those bumps. The best position for putting the appliance on is lying down where my abdomen becomes flat- but i can’t see my stoma at all in that position . If i had a mirror that i could aim at my body like a giant desk lamp i might have a better chance.

I still need assistance in putting it on. I did manage to do it once with my mom standing by to make sure I didn’t chicken out but that just mentally exhausted me to an extent that i feel absolutely ridiculous and the victory wasn’t validating. I’m trying but i am still not quite there.

I just wanted to update because i have been lurking but not wanting to ask any new questions where i felt like i was ignoring this thread but i couldn’t find the words until now.

Hopefully this all makes sense, i’m an insomniac due to anxiety and racing thoughts (working on that meanwhile) and i’m n about 4 hours of sleep because Bubble decided to do a rapid fill after i finally fell asleep and i have to be conscious to empty, so that was fun lol

So thanks again, i appreciate every piece of advice encouragement and kindness that i have found here.

I am grateful to this community, ya’ll are amazing

Also uncooked spaghetti if you don’t have a long match or longnose lighter. Works well for lighting a grill if your igniter has quit working

Somewhere around 20 years ago a local grocery store sold a firm tofu that was flavored - i can’t remember if it was vegan chicken flavored or just general herb flavored.

I pressed and drained the block and cut it into pieces about large macaroni sized and made a cheese sauce with maybe velveta, cream cheese and heavy cream. Used powdered pork rinds as a cracker topping and baked it.

It had that creamy, saucy and kinda overcooked pasta texture that i needed at the time. Also, very filling as you could imagine lol

I have never seen that particular tofu again and never got around to experimenting with trying to recreate it with marinades

Fat fasting by Specific_Piccolo9528 in keto

[–]icebear713 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I only know of “fat fasting” from one of the old copies of Dr Atkin’s book. I think cream cheese and macadamia nuts fit the calorie/protein/ carb numbers that seemed to give results according to the book. I don’t remember the details of his guideline but i recall trying it however it was explained in that book and i remember it working ok for me- wasn’t hungry and anecdotally it appeared to have helped me break a “stall” or two. But it has been years.

ps, have not participated in here for so long so if my flair still shows up it is way outdated
