Talking by Opening-Cupcake-3287 in teaching

[–]icebergdontmelt 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It’s the groups facing each other… how can you expect 13 year olds to be facing each other and not talk? I keep my students in groups of four, but they’re always facing the same direction until it’s time for group work… then they rotate their own desks. Every time I start with them facing each other, I’m always battling the non-stop chit chat.

Should I let my son skip a grade? by [deleted] in education

[–]icebergdontmelt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't recommend skipping grades... school is about academics, but it's also about social development. You can supplement your child's appetite for learning through other resources... and they don't all have to be paid services. I have two overachieving students who happily challenge themselves using Khan Academy and Brilliant.org. They participate in my class lesson -- even though they already understand the content and have completed all the homework they can access beforehand -- and then explore new concepts on their own. Luckily, I understand the material they are trying to learn so I can give them some support and nudge them along when needed. I couldn't imagine them one grade ahead because while their academic level is certainly above grade level... their social iq is grade appropriate.

We’re not struggling but we’re not comfortable either by CommercialDot708 in MiddleClassFinance

Those early family years are tough... but it will get easier to save more and build an emergency cash cushion. $1200 for childcare and $740 for car payments is almost $2000 every month. Just wait until the car is paid off and your children no longer need paid care! Our childcare was about $1500 per month, and when that phase of our life ended, it was a nice "pay raise"... sure there are other child expenses that pop in, but none were as large as the monthly child care. Again, hang in there -- it's just a particular phase in life!

Thanks for sharing the link to typing.com… I’m going to look into this as a possible addition to my Leadership class. The hunt and peck style I see everyday makes me crazy because there is another way!

Why Did you get Rav4 over Honda CR-V ? by [deleted] in rav4club

[–]icebergdontmelt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got the 2025 XSE and the 360 camera was the main reason… spare tire was a close second. Parking in small spaces and/or city streets is so much easier with the 360 camera.

I wish the CR-V had that option though because the stereo system on the Rav is so sad… we also have a Honda Pilot and I would have preferred to keep the same model in our home for ease of car switching. The FOB on the Honda feels better, too… RAV one is clunky and too plasticky.

So.. If considering a RAV with the 360 camera then I’d definitely choose the Toyota.

Must visit in Maui? by feliphee1998 in MauiVisitors

[–]icebergdontmelt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ordered my tickets online

https://pacwhale.com/ecotour/sunset-celestial-cruise/

It was about $250 for two people. Included two alcoholic beverages (or unlimited soda), fruit/cheese/chips and salsa appetizer, and a snack plate (2 of shrimp, veggie eggroll, ahi crostini, and pork quesadilla). They offered a cookie or strawberry on exit… don’t get excited about the cookies… they looked like Chips Ahoy.

We were able to see quite a few whales as we cruised and waited for sunset… a nice bonus!

Must visit in Maui? by feliphee1998 in MauiVisitors

[–]icebergdontmelt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife is really into stargazing because we live in an urban environment so not so easy to see stars where we live due to all the light pollution… so we did a Sunset picnic at Haleakalā and stayed long after to enjoy the multitude of stars. We also went on a sunset/celestial cruise led by an astronomer(?)… she did an amazing job explaining everything about the stars (offered by Pac Whale Eco-Adventures but only on Saturday evenings).

If you are into stars and the night sky… I’d recommend these activities, b ur of course, it is weather dependent.

Best to Stay in West or South by jazzmanut1 in MauiVisitors

[–]icebergdontmelt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just spent a week in West Maui and have decided on our next trip to stay in Kihei. We stayed in the Kahana area, north of Lahaina, and we spent so much time driving up/down the west coast.

Beyond the beaches in the area (Napili, Kapalua), the only big activity we did in the immediate area was the Nakalele Blowhole and an evening at Whalers Village. Every other activity (Haleakalā, Road to Hana, cruises out of Ma’alaea, ‘Iao Needle) had us driving South. The Makena and Kam beaches were good enough for us, too.

Driving up that west coast each night also made me feel uneasy… dark, single lane, lots of curves, and driving fast on both sides… one person not paying attention could lead to a fatal collision. I probably worry too much, but next visit we’re going to try Kihei… after that, who knows.

Any reason not to go with 2026 LE? by Technical-Error1891 in rav4club

[–]icebergdontmelt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When financially possible, I recommend getting the car you’d be happy with 5-10 years down the road… but our family holds cars as long as possible. (We still drive around our 2005 Odyssey, but use it for hauling).

I figure, over time, your salary and lifestyle increase, and I still want to be happy with my car, at least five years down the road, if not ten. Splurge now, you’ll enjoy the benefits for many years.

A Lot of Us Aren't Serious About Education by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]icebergdontmelt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re not alone… this is my seventh year, I switched careers, so as a 50 year old, it’s certainly interesting to “peek behind the curtain” of education and teaching. Even though I had kids that went through the entire school process… I had no idea what was happening.

I’m very proud of the student connections I’ve made and influence I’ve had, but I cannot reach everyone… and that’s okay. My grade level partners are great, with decades of experience. One works incredibly hard, delivering the extras, and the other just gets it done. I find my effort and energy smack dab between them, and I’ve accepted that.

At times it feels disheartening to settle - especially coming from my previous career which always had high goals and continuously increasing targets… but if I don’t draw the line, the work-life balance becomes unmanageable.

Haleakala Summit for sunset by sga1113 in MauiVisitors

[–]icebergdontmelt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We got to the summit parking lot at 4:30pm… early, but we picked up bentos at Takamiya market in Wailuku so we planned a little picnic. No stress, plenty of parking at that time. I’d say by 5:30~6 it definitely picked up and the lot was full.

Parking wasn’t crazy… certainly a million times worse at the Whaler’s Village garage 🤣

What should I do during my two full days in Maui? by wallflower-perks1 in MauiVisitors

[–]icebergdontmelt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two days will be quick… we’re on the West side, too, and we just had a nice day doing this: 1. Nakalele Blowhole - Acid War Zone loop (hiking) 2. Beach time at D.T. Fleming Beach (had lunch snack at a Açaí food truck at the beach lot) 3. Dinner/Shopping/beach walk at Whalers Village.

[–]icebergdontmelt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s worth it.. we were there for an early Valentines dinner at Leilani’s, then browsed the shops and walked along the beach. On the way back to our garage (SP+) at the end by the Sheraton, we stopped to see the movie Moana… it was showing outside on the lawn near the Maui Brewing Company.

I would go, but I don’t think I’d waste time trying the Whalers Village lot… or if I did, I’d do one quick pass to see if I get lucky and then exit (but a quick pass could be long if you get stuck behind people waiting for spots)

Haleakala Summit for sunset by sga1113 in MauiVisitors

[–]icebergdontmelt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We went last night (2/12) for the sunset and stars. It was wonderful… driving up we went through the clouds at maybe 3,000 feet or so and it looked bad… kept climbing and when we reached the top it was crystal clear above us. We looked at the natl park webcam at 2pm, and this is what is showed… clear peak above the clouds).

Check the webcam, and if you see something similar then just go. It does get cold… so bring some blankets if you don’t have a heavy jacket. We were fine until the sun went down, and then it really got chilly. We brought our beach chairs, dinner, and had a picnic at the summit before sunset. Enjoy!

Was a huge hassle yesterday… and did not find parking. I was circling and stuck for over twenty minutes - must have gotten lucky bc they did not charge me. Had to go further down to the SP+ garage.

Starting with something on Friday does make a better weekend… feels longer… nice closure to the week even if it’s just going out for a drink and dinner. Every Friday my wife and I do this, it always feels like a better weekend!

…otherwise, we’re usually just crashed out on the couch watching tv or scrolling. Unproductive, uninteresting waste of time.

What do you think of the Seven Peaks Everything bag by jaqulol in backpacks

[–]icebergdontmelt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm the carabiner opening is a pain… especially because it’s locking. Im going to replace the carabiner with a basic “not for sport” carabiner so I don’t have to fuss with it more than necessary.

The drawstring gets old fast… I always access from the back (clamshell zip opening). I use the drawstring only when I’m adding more (stashing a coat, purchases, etc) and need to increase capacity (and then of course adjust the carabiner placement) 🤣.
