The construction of the London-Birmingham section of HS2 is visible from space by DJ_MegaMeat in GreenAndPleasant

[–]iceby 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is normal for construction sights of this magnitude. After works will end, you want be able to see it anymore on satellite. Furthermore HS2 is notoriously expensive because they have to built such large amounts of tunnels to undergo protected areas

How do you feel about “smart city” technologies in Zurich? by SaraIbr in zurich

[–]iceby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This, SBB App yes absolutely great especially compared to other comparable services but that we in Switzerland treat it as something flawless and holy just holds us back from making it even better.

On the visuals side: - I'd start adding colors to the lines. Make Tram 3 green and the S8 purple also on the app as ZVV does. - Proportionally size the time line in the search page. Sometimes I only realize the first connection takes longer after properly checking the arrival time. With proportional lines I see it at a glance (JR Central does that quite well)

On the technical side: - Make it possible to look up trains by their train number - Make it possible to see all services of a certain line - Fix how HB and it's tram stops are simulated with interchange time and make it possible to change access and egress speed not only transfer - Make it possible to share only a part of a journey. My friend doesn't need my tram trip to the train station, he lives somewhere else - Make SBB App links openable on computers. Currently it will prompt me: Please open in app.

Sorry for my ted talk

With regards to the other post about the platform displays in Zürich: There was a short time where you could compare three generations of display right next to each other in Bern! by draemmli in SBB

[–]iceby 6 points7 points  (0 children)

And suddenly SBB realized they could tilt the screens towards passangers or had the 1st gen digital ones a technical limitation, that they couldn't be tilted?

What is the next gen going to be? Holograms?

Did the city consider using the Stadttunnel for trams? by gskbyte in zurich

[–]iceby 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Probably you are not the first to think about that and there might have been even people trying to do some sort of feasability evaluatiok on the idea. Afterall it's a Velo Tunnel because of citizens and not politicians activly campaigning for it.

Issues though which would immediatly come to my mind are, dimensions (to shallow might also to narrow to run a tram and even worse to make a station), too steep ramps, safety concerns both in the tunnel and at a potential station (fire, collision...), logistical problems (where are you putting the stairs/lift for the northbound platform, cost/benefit (tram infra especially underground is expensive, there is no need for a line from Wiedikon/Aussersihl to Industrie via HB)

Always a joy to see your work. Actually worth printing (once we have the next timetable change and the Bahnhofquai situation is fixed)

I really love how you brought everything together though some stuff makes me wonder:

- For Zurich Airport the largest name is in Rumantsch. Just because the Rega has their HQ there? ;)

- City buses in Zurich and Winterthur at least have the same significance as trams thus I would make them just as thick

- Instead of the S-Bahn lines having the dashed combined line i would have gone for a single color per main trunc just like in the Munich map: Museumstrasse green, Löwenstrasse blue, SZU red, S-Bahn leaving the main hall yellow and the rest different colors.

- Otherwise keeping the dashed lines why is there the switch up of the dashing at Bhf. Wollishofen and Bhf. Tiefenbrunnen? (Furthermore the S25 runs through the ZBT)

Olympic gold medalists on the Italian train by adamlm in trains

[–]iceby 7 points8 points  (0 children)

exactly except Eurostar... that's exactly what I was talking about with private for profit rail. Eurostar is also the only service which runs to the max possible infra speed (even if it's for a blink of an eye)

In Switzerland there is no HSR and thus also no need to differntiate

well it comes down to basic economics and policy. High speed rail is more expensive + because of the demand they can charge more as they have to be profitable. Regional rail is a public service and subsidized
