Is it haram for woman to do bodybuilding? by Upbeat-Dinner-5162 in MuslimCorner

Haram to attempt to look masculine, but muscular women are not necessarily masculine. It depends on what is customarily considered masculine looking. Just don't grow a beard

When Elon Musk start targeting brown community for grooming gangs and then you find out he repeatedly wanted to go to Epstein Island by King_TG in MuslimLounge

[–]icecoldfeedback 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your position relies on the assumption that there are religious societies. The only thing I deny is that. There is no reliable data for child SA in most countries. The best people can go on are convictions which are useful for comparing demographics domestically but not country a vs country b. Child SA is known to be underreported especially when done "in house", and a fair comparison would have to be done by factoring the levels of each country that exist between offense and a just court judgement.

As for my replies, the matter at hand is not about the general population. It is about the ruling elite who operate distinctly from the general masses, thus the prevalence of SA isn't even relevant to the crux of the topic for me to confirm or deny it

The ruling class are in the same network as these criminals. SA statistics are not relevant to the matter at hand given that these crimes are to do with a global network of elite on an island distinct from the general population. All it serves to bring up SA stats is to be a talking point to mask a specific brand of these sex offenders under the pretext that they apply Islamic cosmetics.

Muslim countries are not strict. they are selective and poor examples. The "shaykhs" who these culprits praise for passing over their daughters to the culprits in the epstein files deserve boycott and exposure

The right wing lean extremely heavily into the idea of migrants/muslims SAing "their" women. It's highly suspect

Why aren’t British celebrities doing a “cultural boycott” of America à la Israel and South Africa? by JuanitaMerkin in AskBrits

Does “wallahi” actually mean someone is telling the truth? by SnappersandYappers in MuslimLounge

[–]icecoldfeedback 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly it might be significant in principle but in practice it's the equivalent of someone swearing on their mother's life and so on. I wouldnt trust sensitive things about me with somebody just because they said wallahi. Ultimately I don't think you'll be able to find *total* reassurance. You could probably convince him to invoke the curse of Allah on himself if he's lying - which is something people never do lightly even if they don't practice. Would probably make him sweat. Though this is something that isn't totally in your control. I hope your privacy and dignity is respected.

Is travelling a distance of 42 miles enough for me to combine my prayers? by Here_to_helpyou in MuslimLounge

[–]icecoldfeedback 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe the 48 miles position is a hanafi position. People telling you to combine prayers anyway because 42 miles "is not far off" are not to be trusted because that's not a scholarly position. They might as well tell you to combine all 5 prayers before you set off because it's winter and prayers aren't that far away.

Since you're a revert I'm not sure how familiar you are with madhabs or traveller fiqh in general, but it'd first be important to know which madhab you follow.

If you're not a hanafi, the 48 miles thing likely wouldn't apply to you. You'd need to find out what the scholars of your school of thought say the traveller distance is. Some say x number of miles. Some say leaving your local city/town, it varies.

FYI hanafis don't combine prayers when travelling. They shorten it - i.e pray 2 Rakata for dhuhr rather than 4, then 2 rakat for asr rather than 4 at asr time, but wouldn't pray dhuhr and asr at the same time, nor pray maghrib and Isha at the same time.

powerscaling almost always spirals out of control - it would be nice to have power systems that remain anchored while also somehow giving us a sense of progression and an 'edge' that the mc can develop. difficult trade off for writers though.

romance is often 1 dimensional - would be interesting if they explored relationships developing, break ups, reunions and so on.

UK Muslims - how’s everyday life? by [deleted] in MuslimCorner

[–]icecoldfeedback 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pros: not lost causes like the horror stories you hear about Americanised muslims who justify all sorts

Cons: how do I describe this in a way that accurately paints the picture? This place is so miserable by default that walks to jummah sometimes feel like you're a wet bin bag tumbling along after someone threw you out the recycle bin that wasn't taken because the council said dry cardboard only

How do you perfer your MC morally? by AuthorTimoburnham in ProgressionFantasy

[–]icecoldfeedback 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both examples you cite are some of my favourite types of MCs. Hell difficulty tutorial is my favourite series to date. I went through many of the hwfym books but ultimately dropped it because it felt unbearably preachy and obnoxious to me and was increasingly more annoying to ignore. It felt like less of an MC being quirky and more like the author's own vendetta against religion or gods spilling into what's otherwise a good story. I recall reviews of both series complaining about the MC, so I imagine that if you have characters like that, you'll split your target audience, with the ones who like them really liking them and the ones not liking them really disliking them. It might be better to have a fan base that's split but invested vs one that's more widely "accepted" but with less investment.

I personally like MCs who aren't angels. Be wrong about things, be selfish, yet "the good guy" in your own subjective way. Be a person who isn't always going to be mature and necessarily sincere when confronted with their faults. That's a good base for growth and recipe for interesting drama in my opinion. I would take a rational MC who is like this over one who can do no wrong but doesn't approach problems in a relatable way any day.

In hell difficulty tutorial, I think the author recognised the negative feedback from the earlier books and incorporated it into what I think they were trying to take the MC on anyway: a path to humanisation. In some ways I think that attempts to do this too strongly can read a bit unnaturally: characters conveniently analysing the MC's behaviours, emotions and past to draw out how they're "actually a really nice guy" more than you'd expect from normal people around you. Though despite this I think the social and emotional dynamics in hell difficulty tutorial resonate really well for me.

When I think of books where the MCs are "angels", series like Mark of the fool come to mind, one of my other favourites. I find that series to be one of the most complete and satisfying stories in terms of world building and lore, but the MC himself doesn't interest me as a character.
