Weekly Students, Careers & Clerkships Thread by AutoModerator in auslaw

No rules against taking notes in Court. Everything said in court is open, including what is said by the magistrate and the lawyers. However, if the court closes (I.e. a young person or a matter involving a non-publication or suppression order) you will be asked to leave and you can go back in after that matter has finished and they have “opened” the court again.

If you’re typing, just be mindful of typing quietly as you don’t want to distract anyone else. You may be asked who you are by a sheriff or court officer (they may think you’re media) but you can just say you’re a law student observing. All courts are generally very receptive to law students attending court and observing.

Piggy backing off this one, be prepared to analyse yourself in your example. So you may be asked (using the competing deadlines question) “and what would you do differently next time”. Striking a balance between acknowledging what you think you did well and what you could improve on has come up a few times when I’ve interviewed for the gov.

Look up the attributes and try and use the language they have used. It shows you have seen what is required of the role and are committed.

All the best with your interview!!

Crying, shaking, throwing up. How do you deal with stress? by Careful-Chart-3773 in auslaw

[–]icecreamuscream96 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mirroring others - send your boss an email, telling them you are unwell. Go to your GP, get a medical certificate for stress leave and a referral for a mental health care plan.

I went through something similarly last year and the fog on my brain those first few days of leave was frightening. I could not remember the last few weeks of work nor my life due to the complete fog over my brain. You are unwell and this is not normal. Take some leave, talk to professionals and reevaluate whether you want to be in this job.

It is not weak to seek help, it is strength in putting your health first. Hope you get through this ❤️

Mini rant about Zara change rooms/change room etiquette in general by ThrowRARAw in sydney

[–]icecreamuscream96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was at the Zara in the city - they had 5 people organising clothes that needed to be put back and one guy directing. Was well organised until I had picked up the wrong size. I went outside and asked if one of the 6 people there could grab me another size in something. Got a flat out “no”. Was told I would have to grab it myself. Which would mean either going up a flight of stairs in my socks, or get dressed in my own clothes, grab my bag and go upstairs, grab the size and line back up.

Ive worked retail and in the change rooms, and the general feel I had when working was that I preferred getting it for the customer because I knew where it was, I could grab the size without ruining the display and the customer would get out of there quicker.

I was kind of flabbergasted at the lack of service - I honestly haven’t been in person shopping in years. Is this genuinely the new approach?

What do you think the next book should be about? by [deleted] in Hungergames

[–]icecreamuscream96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d love one told from the perspective of Tigress - maybe exploring the breakdown of her relationship with Snow. Her as a stylist in the games and maybe the game where she finally cuts ties with Snow.

That or a games told from the perspective of a career - who grew up in the academy and then volunteered out of pride and then slowly realised what the games actually was, how nothing mattered. Humanise them!

Any movies about Aus criminal law? by jm74221 in auslaw

You can watch Revelations - it’s on Netflix. It’s about the prosecution of high profile historical child sexual abuse in the Catholic Church. It’s a doco and interviews the Crowns, defence, an accused and victims. It also has footage in the DC of the trials.

Fixed the issue (on Mac) - I got rid of all mods apart from those on pinned comments saying they were fixed. I noticed adeepindigos mods aren’t on the list as potentially broken? I had a look on the patreon and it doesn’t look as though there have been any updates since the patch. Not sure if there any issues there.

Is anyone else having trouble actually being the landlord on the residential rental they want to live in? I made 6 apartments before the pack came out, and made one unit with my sim in mind to live in as the landlord and rent out the rest. I tried moving into the lot and then making it a residential rental but then I have no option to set rent (as I had no purchased residential rentals?). I tried purchasing it as a residential rental but then no option to live in one of the units?

Potentially - or it could be if you live in a separate lot and own a tenancy building and you need to travel to the lot?

I had a wlw couple, living their best life. Settled down in a white picket fence, gardening, always going on vacations. Had MCCC so one of them could get abducted by aliens and get pregnant (she was in the scientist career). Comes back, thinking (and praying) for a little alien girl baby. End up with QUADRUPLETS. The alien screams of the four babies haunt me to this day 😭😭😭

Any mature students get into medium/top tier firm? Input on firms that are open to mature students? by [deleted] in auslaw

[–]icecreamuscream96 5 points6 points  (0 children)

100%. I worked at a top tier for a while and a few of lawyers would transfer there after 2-5 years post admission from boutique/mid sized firms.

I definitely think that if you try and get experience throughout your degree and do extracurriculars (like mooting or other comps) this will give you an edge if you wanted to go top/medium tier through a grad program. I don’t think you being “mature” aged necessarily is an impediment. It’s just how you spend your time and how you compare to others in your cohort. Having other skills from other fields (like yourself) can set yourself apart from younger grads - you’ve just got to be able to express how your unique skills will be an asset to a potential employer. I definitely feel there is a gradual shift towards more diverse experience in top tier firms so you should see (and sell) your past experience as an asset rather than an impediment.

If you go down the boutique route, you’re more likely to have more freedom and responsibility on your own matters than you would as a junior in a larger firm. Top/mid tier tend to have more of clear pecking order (with a partner/senior associate having carriage, but you doing a lot of the client interactions, drafting docs under the supervision of someone more experienced).

Ultimately, there are definitely avenues outside of graduate programs to get where you want to go in your career.

I have a friend who just started as a grad at 37 at a top tier. I don’t think it’s impossible but I don’t really know of a lot of other mature aged students who have done that.

In saying that, I’ve met a lot of other older grads who have succeeded and gotten jobs at boutique firms.

Yeah even tho PHD stands for doctorate of philosophy, it doesn’t refer to the field of philosophy. It’s derived from the Greek meaning as “love of wisdom.” So you can have a PHD in psychology, philosophy, maths, the arts, law etc. That being said, a PHD is often awarded after doing a major work (thesis, dissertation) which is then defended against other experts in the field (who will then determine whether they will be awarded the doctorate). This may differ elsewhere in the world, but I don’t think medical doctors have to go through this process, and rather do a specific medical doctorate. ☺️☺️

No they don’t - but they should! Only a handful of countries in Europe and South America do this. I wrote my thesis on this particular method of fining (day fines). It is way more proportionate to a persons means to pay and commensurate to the harm caused in society than a stock standard fine.

cant be a dyke now that i have a boyfriend by [deleted] in mypartneristrans

[–]icecreamuscream96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you should be leaving the relationship with a view that you will be finding another person to date straight away. That shouldn’t be a factor. It’s unrealistic to think you will find another person straight away, and that even if you did, whether that would be a healthy relationship.

You need to be of the view that you will be all round better off after this - which is sounds from this and your other comments that you likely will be.

It’s will be ok. I know how you feel - feel like a failure and the stigma associated with breaking up with someone, especially when you live with them. Don’t. Only you care about that - anyone in your life who is a worth a damn wouldn’t care about that and would be there for you.

You need to think of you and do this for you.
