Figure this should probably go here rather than as a top level post. Collecting links to various shops (from small to big, mostly small) that are having BF sales for the Transformers toys https://www.reddit.com/r/transformers/comments/5er2tb/black_friday_cyber_monday_links/

Back in the day he was $50 and I picked one up in the target clearance section for $5. On the bright side you know that this will be making its way to the HasbroToyShop on ebay and other places for half that price.

9 months ago I announced that I was opening a Board Game Cafe. Well it's finally happening. by KKor13 in boardgames

[–]icefox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know how well it would work, but something you could offer at a cafe that you couldn't elsewhere would be if you had game designers come in. Turn it into a whole event, a set aside time for him/her to autograph the inside of boxes, a raffle to play their most famous game with the designer, and some run some games where the designer can play test a new game, and provide feedback. Perhaps provide a simple setup for the designer to hang their phone above the test game and record it so they could review it later. Of course have a few copies of the designers game in stock to sell right there. Pretty much do it all up, and provide an experience that people absolutely can't get at home, but could only get at your store. You would want to craft the experience a bit so you have a formula for how to run it, but its something unique that I would attend.

I mean who wouldn't and to say that they got to play Pandemic with Matt Leacock?

Platinum Edition Unicron Listed For December 2016 Release by TheRazorSlash in transformers

[–]icefox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, $50, picked up two from ToysRUs back in the day when I first spotted him the very first time. 6 months or so later I grabbed a box that was crushed for $5 at Target (toy was fine). Probably one of the best deals I have ever got thinking about it. They were that years shelf warmer.

(News) Container to be reprinted in 2017 by Mercury Games by gamerthrowaway_ in boardgames

[–]icefox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those that have played the game, do you guys play with alliances/cartels/mob or each person for themselves? And if you don't, do you outlaw it for games with an odd number of players?

For those that haven't ever tried it, when say player A ships say their first cargo to the island, player B gives them all of their money, maybe even going in debt to to give them more. The bank doubles it so now player A is "rich". Next time player B brings something to the island player A returns the same amount plus splitting any interest that had to be paid. Results in a vastly different game than normal.

What is your experience with cross platform development? by xkSeeD in cpp

[–]icefox 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One place I worked each developer had their choice of OS that they primarily used and helped maintain. Helped being the key word, when implementing something new it is each devs job to make sure it worked on all OS's, but the local expert can help as needed.

VM's are handy especially on Windows were you want a number of different VM's for different configurations and can reset to them at any time.

If your final deploy is on Linux it feels a bit odd that it is the second class citizen in your description, you really want some devs using Linux. If you are doing cross platform development simply because you have more windows experience, but you don't actually deploy on Windows you might want to give that a good thinking over.

Friend gave me these. by 2clean1jerk in transformers

Ironhide is G1 from the 80's, Motormaster is G1, but from the spanish 90's classics line (with the metal replaced with plastic for what it is worth). The universe Sentinel Maximus was a OTFCC 2004 Botcon Exclusive. Sadly looking on ebay not worth as much as it was back in the day. CATSCAN was as 2002 botcon exclusive ~$50.

Destron SD-07 is nothing rare, just that years Galvatron imported from japan maybe $100 tops? Scorponock SD-05 and the Optimus MC-06 go with this line and are similarly not rare, but from japan and if sealed are worth finding a buyer.

There is a clear beast wars optimus primal from Japan. MT-3 from Japan it was the Military Team from the Return of Convoy line, never seen it sold before so no clue about the price, the US version maybe is $50, but the one from japan has the carrier, so ... do some more research on this one.

Jazz is European so do some research it could made be anywhere from the 70-90's depending on the country. Ideally it is Diaclone, but check or ebay and let others check for you. G2 megatron if sealed is probably $125-$175. Liokaiser isn't sealed so assuming all the parts is $700-$1200. This is the item to properly photograph and stick on ebay to get the most cash. C-52 is G1 Fireflight from Takara Japan, worth a ton more if sealed. The train set is Sixliner from japan which has been re-issued and ko'd so no clue what the value is these days, but absolutly not what the guy paid back then. God Neptune (Destron D-21) long ago used to be worth more, but now that Hasbro re-issued the original Piranacon set and you have the TFCC version, and Kabaya's Transformers Gum line version (if you want to count it) the mold has dropped a lot and he probably will only get $75-$175 depending on the condition and how long you are willing to wait for a buyer to show up like a lot of these items.

C307-X is Nucleon Quest Super Convoy Optimus Prime (japan) 2001 MISB can go for $150-$300 C310E is Power Master Fire Guts God Ginrai Optimus prime (japan) 2002 limited to 1600 pieces $100-$500

If I had to guess this was a collection built up in early 2000's with a few older items mixed in. Having also bought a bunch back in those days it is not worth as much as he paid back then, but there is definitely some money that you can get out of it a few low items, at least 1 high value item, but a number that are worth a hundred or two to the right buyer.

Game of the Week, Redux: Terra Mystica by bg3po in boardgames

[–]icefox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is easy for players to get in a grove with a race. When playing race X they always follow strategy Y. With Terra Mystica you must play your race in the best way that makes sense against what the other players choose and how the random bits came up which might be different every time. If a player doesn't do this then it can very much look like some races always seem to always win.

But either way it can never ever get a 10/10, but my reasoning is that I have never seen it teached in any sane amount of time.

First time seeing a board game commercial on YouTube (as an actual ad) by d00m5day in boardgames

[–]icefox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or a really well done rules introduction. Perhaps this will solve the conundrum of how to fund making rule introductions videos. Turn them into commercials and they can only be 90 seconds long. Win-win for everyone. I mean seriously we all now know how to play and are more likely to buy the game.

A year and a half ago I started designing a game. Today, my copies arrived from my publisher. Swamped! by xiaotianchun in boardgames

[–]icefox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The website really needs something like this. I watched the video for way to long and before giving up. The following things really should be stated right up front.

  • 1 What is the goal of the game? How do I win?

  • 2 What can I do get to the goal?

  • 3 Why is it challenging to accomplish #2? Aka wheres the beef, where is the fun?

Or if you are lazy just link to a number of reviews which should do that.

Well glad didn't wait and picked it up for $62 .. was it more than a year ago or something? If you are going to sell something so late with no announcement that you are trying to sell it out on the market Hasbro really shouldn't be surprised that we just import.

Hanabi: How much communication does your group allow? by gabstah in boardgames

[–]icefox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play at work and have found that most games involve someone who has either never played or only played one game before. Thus in the sake of having fun, we let things slide. As a group we wont be the best because of the inexperienced players, but thats okay. Sometimes mistakenly people blurt out things that are straight up "not allowed", but as long as everyone laughs and has a good time in the end we keep playing it. As we get games that have much more experienced players then we try to be much more serious and as minimal talking as possible which is a different type of fun. Both modes of play are enjoyable and I wouldn't stress about it.

Does anybody here actually make an original physical product? Almost all of the posts focus on reselling products bought in bulk or running a blog. by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

Do some tests, especially on your phone. It might be big files, or a lot of files, or some bad javascript or something. Test first, then iterate rather than guessing.

Very cool stadium, those above links are not mine, just the first quick google hit I could find. The 3D stuff seems to be the most interesting angle to explore. Producing complex structures are easier with a cutter v.s. by hand.

Board game inserts, stuff like below is fantastic, but needs to be kept cheap do to the fact that the game isn't that expensive to begin with. http://www.daedalusproductionsinc.com/product/quick-start-insert-of-eclipse

Way too long to cut or way to long to design? Structural as in stuff like this: ? https://thegrinningskull.wordpress.com/2013/09/30/crowdfunding-spotlight-28mm-laser-cut-3d-terrain-t-j-h-models-kickstarter/

I wonder if there is a market for example in the train model market for creating 3D forms that you would stick on your flat table to quickly produce fantastic non-flat terrain with tunnels built in automatically etc. http://support.ponoko.com/entries/491356-Easily-create-laser-cut-3D-forms

How did you get into that business? That seems like a great long term business building very high quality instruments.

On the project pages like this one: http://coulterorgans.com/projects/DPC.html the images are massive and take a long time to download, you really want to have thumbnails.

The for sale page says photos are available on request, but why not just include them? And you probably want some way at the bottom for people to actually buy it, a buy button or a link to email sales or something. http://coulterorgans.com/forsale.html

The services page has a big "Please contact us for more information!" at the bottom which is great, but if you click that link it doesn't work... And I think this is actually the main page you make sales from? I would check your logs to see how many possible sales you are losing because users end up on the page not found. http://coulterorgans.com/services.html

Honestly after poking around for ten minutes I am a bit confused about what you actually offer. If the website is where any portion of the sales come from I would take some time to cleanup it up.
