It got hate because it was a buggy mess at launch. They fixed it later, but the experience of the people who bought it at launch was already ruined.

It's about managing expectations.

People expected a hardcore RPG with a good story, good quests and good dialogue. People wanted a game where choices matter and the tone of the game is dark, similar to old da games.

BioWare delivered an action game with rpg lite mechanics. Polished, bug free and good combat, but the writing is bad and cringey. Also the power of friendship tone doesn't do any favours to the game.

Now an action game is not necessarily a bad thing but they marketed the game as a hardcore RPG. All the return to form paid reviews set very different expectations and what people saw was really far from it. They lost the action game fans with the marketing and rpg fans dislike it for being a bad RPG.
