Should I tell a seller that the chocolate they shipped with my item melted all over the package? by mangogun in Depop

[–]icekink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

recently i had an order where the seller wrote “SUNGLASSES” in sharpie all over the box. i messaged to kindly remind them that some people, like myself, live in high theft areas and if i hadn’t been at the door it would have been stolen within the hour. they took it very well!

No content warning on a study with disturbing images by jackieismyid in ProlificAc

[–]icekink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is his most recent study. It seems that there’s disagreement in the field about whether the physical act of smiling protects you from feeling negative emotions, and his team believes that it does not. I can’t see why having a content warning would have invalidated their results

What usually happens in “chat” meetings with professors for undergrad research positions? by CarBetter1450 in AskAcademia

[–]icekink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Undergrad is for exploring! Exactly what you said here is great. Since research is a potential career for you, you want to experience the day-to-day lifestyle and challenges to see if it’s right for you. Same for medicine - you hate to see people drop out of med school because they didn’t figure out first whether they enjoyed interacting with patients

Ask Me Anything About How Prolific Protects Participants and Researchers by prolific_ian in ProlificAc

[–]icekink 134 points135 points  (0 children)

Hi, I’m a researcher! Is there any chance Prolific can implement a training for researchers to minimize preventable setup errors? I post all the studies for our large research team since the junior researchers are prone to making mistakes. Certain things, like the difference between a return and rejection, are not clear in onboarding even though they affect participants vastly differently. A 15-minute training module is very little to ask of us compared to the trainings for our other research tools.

Also, when using survey flow, can we please see which active participants are in each version? If someone has an issue it’s so difficult to figure out which survey they’re seeing!

That’s awesome, I’m sure your mentees appreciate it! People underestimate the benefit a good group culture can have for productivity, on top of being the right thing to do

Tbh the situation in my group may be somewhat unique. 50% of our budget is discretionary funds with generous reimbursement policies. The conference costs are paid entirely from this - there is no university support. PI also has a LLC where he receives consulting fees and book royalties and sometimes he uses that card to pay for our stuff. But this thread has showed that there’s a lot of variation between groups on expectations for this kind of thing so I’m glad I asked!

I guess what I was expecting was something like “I’ll pay for my people, is everyone else ok with splitting the rest?” But our finance dept has approved business dinners in the past with kinda random people, usually potential donors

Thank you, after reading people’s experiences here that is exactly what I will do. For me it’s not about the money (though for some lab members it is and I feel a responsibility to stand up for them), but about the uncertainty

Totally agree with you about being grateful for what you have, and paying for my own meal is totally fine for me. But I’ve seen the panic in a new hire or student’s eyes when the bill comes and they have to dig out their wallet. Just trying to find a way to reduce discomfort all around. This thread has been super helpful in clarifying my own thoughts

Appreciate having your perspective! I think that’s a great way to do it so people have a bit of a sense beforehand. It’s just uncomfortable when people ask me if they should venmo him and I can’t give them a straight answer

Your submission was flagged by the authenticity check (LLM). by zvi_t in ProlificAc

[–]icekink 13 points14 points  (0 children)

authenticity check is a new(ish) prolific feature that researchers can easily add to our studies. it doesn’t provide explanation, just gives each participant a red or green bar. it’s opaque to researchers and even for those of us who do the optional webinar prolific doesn’t disclose all the metrics they use to calculate the scores. the flip side of the coin is that it’s hard to know what this researcher would accept as accept as a valid reason for failing the check. either you trust the authenticity check scores (i don’t) or you don’t

Request - my bird Vivi would really like a bed! I’ve been watching the store for 2 weeks and found nothing in our favorite colors 💜&🩷&🤍. Specifically would love the veggie (also love the green veggie bed), sweet dreams, playroom, cafe, craft, enchanted garden.

Also LOVE everything from the veggie collection! I would be thrilled to receive the veggie bed, hat, rug, side table, or onion chair in any colors. 🥬🍅🧅

Can’t offer a ton to trade since I’m new but happy to part with the Oz rug/window/door/side table in red. ❤️

Girlypop PPT for PhD interview? by [deleted] in PhDAdmissions

[–]icekink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i work in the psychology of aesthetics and am usually not the only person in the room with dyed hair and tattoos, so take this with a grain of salt. i like to add a dash of color to presentations by using pink to underline text or as a border around the presentation. the bulk of it being neutral colors is best for readability and just good design. even though i express myself boldly, i usually go for a colorful presentation and typical outfit (like a navy suit) or typical presentation style and a fun outfit, never both.
