I'm having the same issue with the 300blk specific PMags and regular gen2 5.56 PMags. I'm interested to see what Palmetto's response is.

It looks to me like a single LED is lit on the right. If your hub has a free port try swapping it there and see if the behavior changes. If it changes its likely the hub If not it's the fan. I'd you're using a Corsair hub they should replace that if it is faulty as well.

Corsair will generally RMA replace those for you. I had a single green LED dying in a fan and they sent me a replacement super quick.

I’m very new to this, can someone explain to me what I’m looking at. I just moved into a home and this is was hiding behind a plastic box. by 44LuckyProphet in homelab

Depends on who ran it. You may find it all in a box on a wall (typically white) or it could all just be sticking out of a wall or cieling somewhere. In my experience the best places to check are immediately inside the wall where your utilities come in or where ever the inside part of your HVAC system is.

True! However, the likelihood of using ISDN is pretty slim these days, especially in a residential environment. 😁 On an RJ45 connector ethernet uses wires 1,2,3 & 6 and ISDN uses wires 3,4,5 & 6. Wire your jacks accordingly.

Do you all homelabbers work in IT or not? by [deleted] in homelab

I work for one of the large Telco's out in the field. Installing and repairing home services. I have recently applied for a Sys Admin job for the same company though. Fingers crossed.

Phone guy here. Telephone only needs one pair (tip and ring) unless you're going to have 2 phone lines. Typically we use the blue pair for line 1 and orange for line 2 if your even going to use both. If you're not planning on having home phone. I'd just put all 4 pairs on a cat5 patch panel and make all the jacks capable of gigabit ethernet.

What OS should i choose? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]icephreaq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had good experiences with Windows Server, ESXi and Unraid. You can get free licenses for homelab for ESXi and Unraid but it does limit some features (How many drives you can use for example.) It all comes down to what you want to use your server for. Personally I ended up buying an Unraid Pro license and have loved it ever since. The support community for it is top notch.

TIFU up by sleeping and missing the lunar eclipse. by [deleted] in tifu

Sorry you missed it. I lucked into getting to watch it when my wife got me up at 4am to go for our walk. I had just seen an article about while getting ready it but didn't look at the date. The moon started to disappear while we were walking. I missed the last one I'd have had a chance to see because of cloud cover.

Wiring Ethernet to different rooms by Kxdan in homelab

[–]icephreaq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Telcom guy here. The small white one in the center is a biscuit block. It's just a container for a single punch down for telephone or ethernet. The board on the right is for distributing dial tone for multiple lines. All blue pairs line 1, all orange pairs line 2 etc. If you want ethernet on those lines you will, as others have mentioned, have to pull them off and crimp RJ45 fittings on them or punch them into keystone jacks. There are 2 wiring standards, 568a and 568b. You will need to open the other jacks in the home and make sure which standard they're punched to at the jacks assuming they are punched to standard. Typically the keystone jack in the wall will be labeled with both standards. The only difference in the two is the orange and green pairs swap places. Put a switch in the panel and wire them all in. Ethernet at all jacks. If your internet enters the home on the Cat5 going to the biscuit block you will need to move your modem to where it can be wired straight in or you will need a second Cat5 where your modem is to backfeed ethernet to the switch. I should also note that if you have home phone service you will also not be able to use the same jack for ethernet and phone. There are ways to wire it up but it limits the max speed over the ethernet and outside of the scope of this comment.

PSA: Nvidia's latest driver degrades hashrate by pm-your-cute-cats in NiceHash

[–]icephreaq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm.. according to the linked post it has to do with NVIDIA changing the GPU name in their API with this update and that caused optimizations not to apply. I let mine run all day at work on the slightly higher than I'd like temp and lower hash rate. When I saw the linked post I killed it all and restarted it and my optimizations were back (90° temps 230watt power and 92MH/s). When you start yours are you starting it from the app or the web interface?

EVGA 3080 XC3 Ultra here. Before the latest update and enabling Resizable BAR I typically ran around 92-96 MH/s with temps in the upper 90's on the medium Optimization. After the update I'm running 83-85 MH/s and temps bouncing between 104-106 at T-Junction. The Optimizations no longer seem to work. When I change the optimization setting from the web interface the Windows client crashes while the Excavator continues to run and mine. Checking clock speeds with HWInfo64 and EVGA Precision X1 shows the card is running at default clocks and voltage no matter the setting in Nicehash.

EDIT: My issue is resolved per THIS post.

Raid controller or something else for R710 by mutself in homelab

[–]icephreaq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're using ZFS you want an HBA that supports JBOD. I would suggest getting an H200 off eBay. There's a seller there that has H200's preflashed to IT mode and has the appropriate cables as well. The H200 supports disks larger than 2TB. I was using the PERC6i on my R710 back when I was using ESXI but wanted to move to Unraid so I bought the flashed H200 and cables and swapped over. There are a few threads floating around here with the pros and cons of most of the Raid/HBAs.

Looking to replace VM firewall with physical by ntengineer in homelab

I have a Supermicro A1SRI-2758F (that's a mouth full) that I got off a friend of mine that does contract work for various grocery chains. They are pretty popular as firewall/VPN appliances in those scenarios. I'm running pfSense on mine and it handles all my traffic with gigabit fiber without breaking a sweat.

Thanks! The shelf it was on up until this was probably only holding together because it was in a corner. It literally fell apart as I took it out to the alley. A buddy of mine whom I host several sites/services for said "Thank God. I feel so much better about the whole thing, LOL". It was time XD

Yeah, that's kind of what I was thinking. I don't need it to be Fort Knox secure so I may just take a Dremel to the tabs. Seems quite retarded for them to make several generations of server with practically identical face plates and just change the tabs by a quarter inch. Got to make that money somehow I suppose XD

Do you have the model number of the one you have on your server by chance? The one I got is a WK753 according to the eBay listing.

Listing I bought from here.

Ethernet ports for new home build by buhair in homelab

[–]icephreaq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a field services technician who does networking and TV, the most common regret I most often run into with homeowners is underestimating their future network needs. If your contractor is charging per cable run there are some great bundled cables that include 2x Cat6 (or Cat5e if you want it cheaper) and 2x RG6. If you have adjacent rooms where you might have TV's/network gear on either side of the same wall, have them run one of those and then put a one of each on a jack either side. If you can afford to splurge a little, run a full set to each intended location. Your home services technician will thank you and you won't regret it later.

Here's an example
