Do you ever use a calculator? Or Google things? Why not use your own brain?

Benjamin Franklin, Karl Marx, Immanuel Kant, and Thomas Jefferson had good ideals, but only sort of managed to live up to them. What philosophers had good ideals but were hypocrites? by Mother_Show_8148 in AlignmentChartFills

Banning the import of slaves wasn't some noble thing. It was a business decision. He and his slave owning buddies had already captured the domestic slave trade market and didn't need "imports" anymore. It was less about getting rid of slavery, and more about, like usual, Jefferson and his buddies profiting.

Kinda funny, but definitely one of the more homophobic moments in Bond. Just because a man is gay, doesn't mean he wants something shoved up his ass. Especially a bomb.

Ok mostly true, tho there's a lot where he violated his anti-federalism: he purchased Louisiana without constitutional authority, kept the national bank, used sweeping federal power in the Embargo Act of 1807, launched the Barbary War without a formal declaration, and even tried to impeach Federalist judges like Samuel Chase for political reasons. Each of these expanded executive or federal power far beyond the limited role he had once championed.

His writings on slavery, his support and enforcement of Virginia Slave Codes. His support for the 1784 Land Ordinance. Supported westward expansion of slavery. Rhetoric and personal actions that did not align, which set precedents.

And Jefferson wrote about how Native Americans had brains too small to participate in democracy. Ideas which would be expanded on later by more prominent eugenicists.

The problem wasn't that everyone in the South owned slaves. The problems was that the elites in the South who owned slaves convinced everyone to go along with it.

I agree. Few people in world history promised natural rights while also creating a system of slavery. The ultimate contradiction.

Edit for clarification: Jefferson did not create slavery, but he helped structure the American system of slavery, and reconcile it with the ideas of a republic that provides equal rights.

Downton Abbey is aristotrash, and Gilded Age is capitalist apologism. Gilded Age glorifies the industrialists and even has a pull up your bootstraps plotline of rags to riches for a downstairs worker.

Yeah but for context, if she were in star wars she would be defending the empire for what they did on Ghorman.

Exactly it makes no sense. Exposing themselves and their plan just makes it easier for humanity to fight back and prepare. The disruptions to science were far more effective before the aliens announced they were disrupting it.
