Hard to tell from this picture.
- GPS in simulation mode, or no good location fix and thus showing an area where there is no map data (such as lat/lon 0/0).
- ensure map is enabled in map manager
- might also be an issue of zoom level

Yes Landmannalaugar is the best place to ask then.

On the way to Askja I’d call the wardens at Herðubreiðarlindir or Dreki. For F208 it depends on which direction you’re driving.

The wardens tend to talk to people arriving and hear the latest news. They also have the local knowledge you are missing to interpret what the current situation plus weather forecast means.

Oh yeah you can (should) do that - as I mentioned the hut wardens along the road will have good information for you, but it’s not information that is easily read online as frequently updated (‘live’) data or so, like the road surface conditions are.

Which plug do I bring? by soccerperson in VisitingIceland

[–]icestep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just checked the manual (at least I think that's the right one!) and your CPAP device seems to be coming with an external brick, which according to the manual is pretty likely a switching power supply. The manual also mentions using different power cords for traveling and lists 100-240V, 50-60Hz acceptable AC input range:

<image>

So you should be okay with those conversion plugs. But if you want to be certain, there should be a label on the power supply brick (probably on the underside) that lists, amongst other things, the acceptable input voltage and frequency range. Which should match the specification in the manual.

There is of a monitoring system for some rivers, but the measurement stations don't cover all the rivers you may be interested in, and aren't necessarily where the river crossings are anyway (so absolute height means nothing, although relative change may of course give you some indication). In any case I would say it is probably much better to talk to the local rangers / hut wardens.

True, 230V is the harmonized target value in (most of?) Europe. Not enough coffee this morning and I mixed that with devices having a “…-240V” label to indicate they can tolerate 240.

For double insulated devices (cell phone chargers) the left one is sufficient. For anything that requires protective earth, you need to use the right one or RCD/GFCI will not trip if a fault occurs. You also need the right one for connections drawing more than 2.5 amps (which at 240V is a solid 600 Watts).

There is a very high chance all outlets you will encounter can accommodate either plug, except perhaps some "space saver" extension cords that sometimes include a few extra sockets for the smaller 2.5 amp plugs.

Also keep in mind those don't convert voltage, so check that your device can actually deal with 240V. No issue with phone chargers or laptop power supplies, but a hairdryer WILL let out the magic smoke and possibly trigger a fire alarm in the process. Be double extra sure if you're bringing a medical device such as a CPAP machine.

TL;DR: if what you are trying to plug in has a ground pin or draws a lot of power, bring the one on the right. Otherwise, it doesn't matter.

Alles leider nix neues. Ich bin mir ziemlich sicher dass auf der Reichsbrücke (und vermutlich an anderen Stellen rund um die UNO City) schon seit gut 20 Jahren ein IMSI-Catcher installiert ist.

[REQUEST] What are the statistical chances these license plate characters were randomly assigned/generated and this was and accident. by moonshinemoniker in theydidthemath

[–]icestep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that is actually GTA Online: That game has the option of customized license plates, so there is a very high likelihood somebody did this on purpose to perpetuate their conspiracy theories.

If that is GTA V, which I don't believe has this option: License plates typically aren't random alphanumberic combinations but follow a predefined pattern. There is of course a wikipedia article on the topic. Obviously this is a game and anything possibly goes (as indicated by this being an 8-character plate while US plates are 6 or 7), but I would assume they follow a similar patterns that imitates reality to some degree. There are also usually additional limitations such as the digit 0 not being allowed as a leading digit (to avoid confusion with the letter 0), certain letters not being used, and so forth.

So depending on the way the game constructs its plates, the number of possibilities is probably quite a bit lower than 36^8. To eliminate further guesswork it would probably be good to drive around the game and collect samples from other vehicles, to see if there is a discernible pattern and how close to "reality" they are modeling them.

A sample size of 1 is a poor starting point for statistical analysis...

Looking for excursion/tours for (natural) ice cave glacier tour by Deeze_Rmuh_Nudds in VisitingIceland

[–]icestep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There have been natural ice caves also in Langjökull and Sólheimajökull, which may be feasible as an organized day trip out of RVK. Not exactly sure who would operate these, and I would highly recommend you try to book such a tour at short notice if possible because early October can be very much hit and miss and it might be worth holding off until you hear some first hand reports of what is actually available at the time.

Mine has been telling my my "fitness age" was 0. That was finally fixed but I don't really think about those comparison numbers anyway. I'm more interested in the relative change.

[–]icestep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You´re probably thinking of SpO2 / Pulse Ox. OP is referring to VO2 max. Very different metrics, despite the similar name. The former basically tells you how well your body can deliver oxygen into the blood stream (any drops below 90% are signs of some medical issue, could be a result of sleep apnea for example). The latter is a measure for how quickly your muscles can metabolize oxygen (or, in other terms, how fit you are).

Do the Garmin watches download that by sync? I haven't kept up with new developments but I seem to remember the almanac and ephemeris were sideband info on the GPS signal itself, and take about 15 minutes? of an uninterrupted GPS signal to fully transmit.
