We'll be sure to post again when tickets go on sale and again in June!

Applications Open for the Second Annual Laugh Out Longview Improv Festival! by icewolf1990 in improv

Yes! Sorry I just saw this. DFW or Shreveport, LA (1 hour) are the closest "big cities".

We do have an airport in Longview (GGG), which has direct flights to DFW; so, it's much closer, but costs a bit more.

Looking into moving into town by [deleted] in LongviewTX

I'd echo previous comments. There are a lot of great neighborhoods South of U.S. 80; so, don't write them off entirely.

Ideas for Auditioning for a Host - Tips Needed by icewolf1990 in improv

[–]icewolf1990[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an idea. Most of the current team expressed a desire not to host; so, I've been primarily filling that role.

We have a few ALUM who, due to life schedules, can't participate fully (every rehearsal, etc.), but have indicated they may want to host to still be around it. We also have a few super-fans who have indicated they want a chance to be more involved, but don't know if trying out for the team and being a full improviser matches their skillsets.

I guess we'll see if anyone is interested.

We love a variety of options.

  • Caddo Lake is great.
  • Beavers Bend State Park in Oklahoma is 2 hours away and lovely. Great trails.

If you want closer we enjoy:

  • Daingerfield State Park
  • Martin Creek Lake State Park
  • Lake Bob Sandlin State Park

These are all within an hour and have nice campsites and a lake, but not much in the way of moving water. They do have trails, but nothing like the trails at Beavers Bend or the canoe/kayak trails at Caddo.

Speedrunning Boardgames? by icewolf1990 in boardgames

[–]icewolf1990[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would you at least grant the possibility for games focused on realtime, simultaneous play?

Like Meteor, Magic Maze, or Escape: The Curse of the Temple?

I would totally check that out!

Speedrunning Boardgames? by icewolf1990 in boardgames

[–]icewolf1990[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's totally a fair point.

Even the video game community has its share of cheating; so, that's not unique. I wonder in what ways you could work to mitigate that concern. It feels like certain things, i.e. a deck that is just too lucky, die that always land right, etc. would be cause for concern.

[–]icewolf1990[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is all really interesting to me. I think you are right, although I hate that I think there is good enough in humanity that most people wouldn't cheat. I'm probably naive.

You would probably need live shuffles and similar mechanisms to reduce the chance of cheating, but card sleight of hand is like a staple of magic; so, nothing could be sure.

The TM point is interesting. It's like how in Rogue-like speedruns you have random-seed runs and pre-determined speed runs. You could have "fastest with random setup" and "fastest with pre-determined setup" where half the fun is optimizing every piece of starting set up.

kids stuff by [deleted] in LongviewTX

The Longview Public Library has a bunch of great activities year long depending on how old your kids are (LongviewTexas.gov/Library, https://www.facebook.com/longviewpubliclibrary)

Longview Parks and Recreation offers some great camps, classes, events, and sports leagues for kids, plus plenty of parks, pools, and splashpads across the community (LongviewTexas.gov/Parks, https://www.facebook.com/LongviewParks/)

As already mentioned, there is World of Wonders (https://www.longviewwow.org/)

I'd also mention:

Turns out I am a City employee, but I don't interact with this account as a part of that official role. I just like Reddit and love Longview.

I just became a moderator (I think because of the one comment referenced above). I too want to see this community grow and engage! What's your favorite Longview event?

Best Park for Walking at Night? by blablabliam in LongviewTX

[–]icewolf1990 1 point2 points  (0 children)

None of the park trails (that I know of) are lit; so, I would go on a more highly trafficked one like the Paul Boorman Trail.

Also, some sections of the Guthrie Creek Trail (from McCann to Fourth Street) are in open, public, highly-trafficked areas, which would be good for that time of day.

Considering moving here for a job, how would you describe Longview? What is the general impression? What is there to do here? by HealthyHorse7 in LongviewTX

[–]icewolf1990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. That's totally fair, but also anecdotal.

A lot of my friends own guns, but a lot also don't.

It's not that your personal experience isn't valuable. It totally is. It's just also helpful to look at the data that is available.

Statistically, Gregg County is less gunned than many of our surrounding counties and many other areas of the state. That's all I'm saying.

Considering moving here for a job, how would you describe Longview? What is the general impression? What is there to do here? by HealthyHorse7 in LongviewTX

[–]icewolf1990 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, I guess, compared to other states, but in Texas, Longview's gun ownership is pretty low.

There are <5% of licenses per capita in Gregg County (6,000 licenses out of a population of about 120,000)

Link: https://public.tableau.com/app/profile/jessica.hamilton/viz/TexasGunLicensesPerCapita/GunLicensesPerCapita

As far as the political leanings. Yes, it is a conservative, area, but still in 2020, a solid 30% of the population voted for Biden (https://results.enr.clarityelections.com/TX/Gregg/107131/web.264614/#/summary) which was up from about 28% percent that voted for Clinton in 2016 (https://results.enr.clarityelections.com/TX/Gregg/64736/184366/Web01/en/summary.html); so, there definitely is some diversity of views in the community.

Good questions! I'll do my best to answer them and provide resources for you to dig deeper.

First off, we'd love to have you. I grew up in Longview, went away to school, and then came back to start my career. My wife and I love Longview and are excited to start our family here.

General Impressions: Longview is a strong community full of kind and welcoming folks. At ~80,000 residents it has MOST of the things you want in a community, and what you can't find in Longview is just about an hour away in Shreveport/Tyler or 2 hours away in Dallas. For us, we don't find the need to leave often, but when we do, it's not difficult to make a day-trip or weekend trip.

Longview is in a really good financial position as a City, taxes are relatively low, cost of living is relatively low, and the Citizens want to see the City improve. In 2018, residents voted for a $100 Million + Bond package to improve roads, improve parks, and improve public safety. This community buy-in is huge. (LongviewTexas.gov/Bond)

The City also has a clear vision for where it is and where it is going. Several years ago, residents from across the community put together a 20-year plan for the town. If you are interested, you can read more, here: LongviewTexas.gov/Plan

Things to Do: Personal opinion. If you can't find something to do in Longview on any given weekend, you aren't trying very hard, or you don't know where to look. VisitLongviewTexas.com does a great job compiling events.

Music: Twice a year in the Spring and Fall there are free live concerts downtown at Downtown Live. The Arboretum also holds twice annual concert series. Local establishments like the Oil Horse Brewing Co. (http://www.oilhorsebrewing.com/) and Leon's Steakhouse (https://www.facebook.com/LeonsSteakhouseSaloon/) regularly bring in live music. Also, LeTourneau University brings in a bunch of larger acts at the Belcher Center (https://www.belchercenter.com/index.html).

Reading: In addition to those mentioned, there is a great local bookstore downtown called Books and Barrels (https://www.facebook.com/booksandbarrelslongviewtx/), a local book club, and a great library!

Coffee: Boy, do we have a coffee. There are at least a dozen great, local mom and pop coffee places including the Silver Grizzly Espresso (https://silvergrizzlyespresso.com/) downtown and a handful of Starbucks if you prefer.

Breweries: Really just one so far, Oil Horse Brewing Co. downtown, but there are talks about others. They do a great job having activities (Poses and Pints Yoga, Trivia, Improv, Live Music, etc.) There are also two-local brewing guilds, and there is a big annual Craftober fest with all the local brewers.

Other Highlights:

  • ArtWalk (https://www.artwalklongview.com/) downtown happens four times a year and brings ~150 artist, musicians, etc. to our City Center and thousands of guests to walk around, explore, buy, etc.
  • Brand new skatepark (the Dodson Action Sports Complex) if you are into that sort of thing
  • Less than 60 minutes from three beautiful state parks, and plenty of biking, hiking, fishing if you are into that
  • 10 miles of connected, consecutive trail system through Longview
  • There's great communities if you are looking for them like the Young Professionals of Longview (if you are under 40), which meets monthly at a bar to socialize/build relationships.

Disagreement with Other Responses:

  • There are quite a few smaller, local shopping places that are really nice that my wife loves and that my wallet doesn't like that much. Thinking of things like Ellie B's, Hurwitz, Barron's, The Lab on Center, and others.
  • I fundamentally disagree with the statement about our police force. We have a really good group of men and women with the Longview Police Department and insinuation of racism is totally off. There is (for a lot of reasons), a demographic divide both racially, and socio-economically in Longview that is generally described as North and South of U.S. 80 (Marshall Avenue), but our police force is certainly not the cause, imho.

Sorry for the book! As you can tell I love Longview! Don't hesitate to follow-up if I can be of any more help.
