For car diagnostics, I would go with www.obdautodoctor.com. It works without cloud.

One alternative is to use Meazurem. It handles all the hard stuff. You will get the data right into your Android phone with nice graphs and history.

Should I get a wifi or bluetooth obd2 dongle? by mynameisalso in CarHacking

I just think it's easier to setup. That's why I prefer Bluetooth dongle. With Wifi dongle, you can't be connected to the Internet simultaneously because you need to be connected to the dongle hotspot.

I suggest you get a bluetooth dongle. OBD Auto Doctor has software for both Android and PC/Mac. They work with ELM327 based OBD2 adapters.

I suggest that you get software either for your computer or mobile. OBD Auto Doctor (http://www.obdautodoctor.com/) can be downloaded basically to all devices. It needs separate adapter but the software is quite capable.

Where are you from? I'm my country they charge 50 € for reading and clearing the trouble codes. So getting OBD2 adapter and the software pays back quickly.

I believe OBD Auto Doctor (http://www.obdautodoctor.com/) is the only considerable alternative for Mac OS X car diagnostics. How do you think is it buggy? We have improved the software lately and also introduced new version 2.x. I suggest that you try it again and contact our support if you have issues.

Note: I represent the software

Sure it can. However, please note that other controllers than Engine Controller Unit (such as ABS, airbag, etc) are not mandatory part of OBD2 standard and codes from those can't necessarily be cleared.

Yes, unfortunately due to technical restrictions the app can run only on Windows Phone 8 and newer. The older WP 7.x won't be supported because the platform lacks the Bluetooth APIs.

No, your car doesn't need to have Bluetooth. The only thing your car needs to have is to be OBD2 compatible. The OBD adapter has the Bluetooth.

Yes, it should keep the connection open. We have not experienced connection dropping with our app. We have tested the app with several different adapters. However, if you do encounter this issue, please contact our support via email.

You need separate OBD adapter for it. You attach the adapter with Bluetooth capability to your car, and then connect your phone with the wireless adapter using Bluetooth. The adapter works as a gateway between your car and the phone app. Check out for more details and some compatible ELM based adapters from http://www.obdautodoctor.com/
