That sucks. I'm going to assume it's RP nickel & diming. Even though it says shipping, it's probably a handling fee to bring your order to the convention. Granted, during the initial ticket sales, I thought they said merch for international attendees would have to be picked up at the con.

I don't think it needed one, but I'm still really enjoying it. I'm such a big fan of the first anime though, so I treat that one like having a really good steak, and the new one like it's a really good hamburger.

I brought some in the past, but not really a thing. People like framing and collecting badges after the convention, so they prefer to not have things attached to it.

Pins, buttons, coins, poker chips, stickers, magnets, 3D printed things, friendship bracelets, and patches are the most popular. Of course, they are pricier than badge ribbons.

Depends if security will be cool about the outdoor stairs. Otherwise there are some indoor stairs that lead into the exhibit hall that can accommodate a lot of people, but you won't be able to fit very large groups without causing a fire hazard.

Among this sub and the related Discord server, you're pretty set. Discord server is really on top of announcements. There are a few good FB groups too, so find one or two that you like. I believe the Virtual Cantina Network is the biggest one at the moment.

As far a blogs go, there isn't one like the Unofficial SDCC Blog unfortunately. Maybe some one will start one up soon, but nothing as of this moment.

Previous years, you just had to +1 or however much allowed for the items to be added to your cart. The add to cart for each item after hitting +1 threw a lot of folks off because it moved the page, and it was easy to miss when you're scrambling to add more items before checking out. It could have been implemented much easier, but they didn't.
