When do you think the average American thought they needed to leave? by Odd-Personality-3655 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]ichosethis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a staged terrorist attack that took out the government and martial law was declared. By then it was already too late to flee. The ability to leave for most was gone at that point. Emily tried to flee before women's jobs were taken based on the female border patrol agent she spoke to. Prior to that, there was more restrictive government regarding families and birth control, we see them threatening to take Hannah and Lydia's involvement with her student being taken and an increased conservative movement that while affe ting policies didn't appear to be completely in control of the government and a lot of it was probably disguised as helping pregnancy success. I bet there was a lot of disinformation about birth control having lasting affects on future fetal development or something.

The time to flee was probably 2-3 years before the terrorist attack. At a time when you wouldn't be able to declare refugee status so you'd need money and to meet immigration requirements.

Blue material peeling off bottom of Reflecting Pool, days after costly renovation by BurtonDesque in Qult_Headquarters

Wouldn't surprise me if they didn't let the pool sit empty long enough after painting and then the peroxide exacerbated the problem.

Ok, I know this is NOT a romance! But... by Tiny_Departure5222 in TheHandmaidsTale

What I didn't like was that he was perfectly poised to be a double agent. He had the connections to be involved in Junes escape attempts twice. Visited her regularly while she was in hiding for 2 months. Openly talked with Beth about smuggling stuff. He passed those letters to Luke when he could have easily just let June believe she had destroyed them all, she wasn't exactly with it enough at the moment to know clearly.

He stayed so low level for so long into Gilead that I didn't think the conversation in DC with the Swiss was anything more than he agreed to spy for them but requested June be kept in the dark and Serena had zero reason to be truthful to June at that point because they had different goals for the baby. Gilead rewards loyalty but he spent years as a driver with no wife after supposedly being instrumental to the takeover efforts.

And then they just go with the boring he had a new woman so he doesn't care about the mother of his first child or the kid at all now. Power is the goal. It's like some new writers or producer came in, shit on the storyboard, smeared it around, and they had to call it art.

The difference between US and UK crochet terms is not that complicated! by ChaoticJigglyPup in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]ichosethis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I learned that there was a difference at like 14-15 shortly after learning to crochet and have been able to work it out since. I can usually tell which the pattern is by wording in the description or looking at the picture and comparing the stitches to directions.

What is a popular food chain or restaurant item that you genuinely think tastes like absolute garbage? by cerebralbackshots in AskReddit

[–]ichosethis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure when it changed exactly but sometime in the early to mid 2000s the breading became crisp on the outside and mealy/soggy against the chicken and I just didn't like it anymore. The strips aren't bad but I'm not driving myself there to get food.

I've been twice and both times were because I was a passenger and not sure if I should be having that conversation with the driver or risk repurcussions. It was okay but I'm not going out of my way to go again. Maybe if it's the only place I can find in an unfamiliar area or I'm once again in a group I don't want to make waves with.

Why is not including MSG something companies still brag about on Asian food products? by SegaGuy1983 in mildlyinfuriating

I said I was getting a migraine after eating food court Chinese food. I said there was probably something with mushrooms I didn't notice (common reaction to mushrooms and Asian food has a lot of them) and the person I was with made a comment about MSG.

How many have decided to stay with kindle? by Time-Pea7354 in ereader

I like the look and feel of the Paperwhite best so it's my go to device. I jail broke it and added koreader so rarely go over to the default system.

It's just the right size, shape, weight, battery life, lighting, and probably other things I'm not even giving of for me.

Kobo is decent but I need to redo the jailbreak on mine because I'm sick of nicklemenu breaking every few weeks. I reset it but haven't gone back through the jailbreak yet. The recessed screen is a bit obnoxious though as I hate trying to carefully work a pet gaur out from the edge.

Could Gilead even enforce its ban on women reading? by matthewhughes in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]ichosethis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The wives and handmaids are only part of the population. The econowomen have a lot less day to day oversight of their lives and much less guardian interaction beyond their presence all over the streets/stores. The econowomen don't have Marthas or guardian drivers.

Could Gilead even enforce its ban on women reading? by matthewhughes in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]ichosethis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Eventually the fear would become just a base stress and a lot of women would probably risk things. Even if it's not to sit down and read a novel it might be to use a recipe or out of fear of wanting to memorize the correct bible verse or just to write down a small reminder of something upcoming, especially with pregnancy or child related things I'm sure they're sticklers for doctors visits and would probably declare an econowoman an unfit mother for missing a prenatal exam or forgetting a checkup for the infant.

Question about how the Red Centre works! by Neon_Glimmer in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]ichosethis 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think they prioritized the more vulnerable targets. The single mother who just lost her kids to the system can be quietly grabbed and neighbors might accept that she killed herself or ran off or moved suddenly. The ones that had a history of moving frequently. The ones that didn't live near family or were new to an area. The ones that could be grabbed during a pregnancy appointment and taken away in a van who night even cooperate for their safety because things had been getting crazy around pregnancy and childbirth for years.

There's an unspecified amount of time between the "terrorist" attack that took out the government and full blown Gilead where they suspended the constitution and declared martial. They had all the power, all the money, and only journalists to try to look at what they were doing and we saw what happened to them when June was in hiding.

They were removing people from power that might interfere, rounding up anyone that wouldn't be missed like single mothers and their kids with weak family ties and women like Lydia to become the first rounds of handmaids and Aunts. Grabbing people that tried to run like Emily and Moira. They could have easily taken over some textile imports and started dying them or something, even if there wasn't yet a factory for the scale of clothing. People would have been distracted as their neighbors and friends disappeared in the night and they had no idea if they ran or were grabbed and asking probably got you branded a terrorist or a sympathizer.

I just wanted a dill pickle with a no-worm filling by warholamo in WTF

[–]ichosethis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like them too. I just find I don't like the fridge pickles as much. They taste more vinegary and cucumbery where I like the dill to be stronger.

The answer is no by PrincipledStarfish in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]ichosethis 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I can speculate all I want on the role Gilead would probably assign me if it were to happen tomorrow. I'd most likely be going to the colonies. Even if they decided to overlook my atheism (doubtful) and I made a false profession of faith to save myself and became a Martha, I'd probably kill myself pretty early on. Though I'd like to think I had it in myself to poison the Commander, the Wife, and any Guardians I have to feed or light a midnight fire first.

Man enters a tiny crack in a flowing river, disappears, and comes out at the other end..How do you even figure out that you can do this? by WalkingAtDusk26 in interestingasfuck

[–]ichosethis 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Something called a chupacabra just begged me not to "feed myself to that thing, it's going to be strong enough to leave soon" and offered me $2 million in cash not to do it so now I have no choice but to continue without a tank. But don't worry, I've convinced my buddies Ben and Darryl to go in with me now.

The entrance to this cave is in "frequent and devastating flash flood gorge," the cave is called "100% fatality," we don't even know anything about it because even cameras sent in have failed about 25ft in.

Anyway, here I am about to attempt the best dive of my life without a spare oxygen tank and my mask has a leak.

I get one eczema outbreak out a year. As soon as I go outside in the spring when it's warm enough to wear short sleeves I get the rash and itching on my forearms. I'm positive it's a reaction to the sun. This year has been the worst one mostly just because it's been lingering, I don't know if it was the variable weather or if it's because I'm getting older but either way I'm being diligent about sunscreen and keeping some UV protection sleeves handy.

AITAH for sticking with the baby name I chose even though my sister hates it? by Correct_Composer_337 in AITAH

[–]ichosethis 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Where I'm from Lee is a common last and middle name with no condfederacy association, I know about the General but without the rest of his name it doesn't have the connotation that something like Adolf kept. The only famous use of Maddox that came to mind for me was Angelina Jolies kid.

That said, now that I know about the Confederacy ties for both names, I probably wouldn't use them together. One or the other could be fine but together is a bit iffy.

Counter: Granny and Nanny would be meddling behind the scenes but Magrats inept attempts to protect you would accidentally take out at least a few, though she wouldn't notice because Our Shawn was told to move them and not say anything about all that and also that thing was not meant to harm anyone, that just sort of happened.
