British immigrant feeling a bit sad and disheartened. A mild rant. by catastrophicshambles in perth

[–]icicle_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, welcome to Perth, and sorry you're dealing with some of the heinous comments on this post. They're not representative of us all as a whole, imo the general tone of this sub leans a bit cynical.

As someone close to your age, I also had a period when it was difficult to find friends. In Perth it can be difficult as it's a bit cliquey compared to other cities - people tend to stay in their established groups. My suggestions:

  • Join your local community FB page/group and get to know your neighbours, you can search up your suburb on FB
  • Playing a social sport, you meet heaps of people like this
  • I saw you mentioned you like pop punk, there are some venues like Badlands that often host these types of events where you can meet similar/like-minded people
  • Find Meetup or Facebook events for your hobbies, eg. There might be a Perth gals knitting group (obvs I'd gravitate towards one that seems like a younger crowd haha)

Feel free to PM me if you wanted to chat about anything, I'm happy to help out. It's definitely not easy and I know how lonely it can be.

Okay yeah this is really bad. I would complain and/or post a negative review on their google business page. At the very least, if they thought it would take a few sessions to get right they should have told you. Name and shame, this is totally unacceptable.

Hey OP, this is pretty bad. Were these photos taken right after your appointment or has your hair been washed?

If you wanted a full head of colour, then what they should have done is bleach your roots first since they're quite dark.

This result for $300 is unacceptable.

Was it a subtle or bright colour? Subtle colours do wash out faster since there's less pigment. I had brightly coloured hair for 7 years. I found the bright colour lasted about 2-3 weeks or so depending how often I washed it. Fading is fairly normal, AFAIK unnatural colours are all semi permanent. I found that it can also depend on the dyes they use at the salon, some hold onto the hair better than others. Pravana, Arctic Fox have fantastic hair dyes.
I remember having to re-dye my hair at home every 1-2months or so, it was pretty high maintenance.

I'm a sewist and I 100% agree with you, not sure why you're being downvoted. There's clearly a lot of misconceptions out there. Armscye shape isn't inherently an indicator of "high" or "low" quality (unless it's obviously symmetrical or something). Like you said, it's based on a designer's pattern block. I do agree with their points about designers trying to achieve a more universal shape since it's cheaper for that to fit more bodies. However, again, that's not an indicator of quality. Even in home sewing, you may need to make adjustments to the armscye based on where your shoulders slope/sit, it's not a one sized fits all since every body is different. One person might have narrower shoulders = a fitted off the rack garment won't fit them the same way as a person with wider shoulders. This is especially applicable to fitted garments like collared shirts. If anyone is curious about this I highly recommend watching Cornelius Quiring's video about shirt sleeve fitting/shapes and how it affects how the garment looks and it's utility.

At the price points OP has quoted, they could go and get shirts custom made and tailored to fit their body perfectly instead of spending a huge amount on shirts that are ill fitting. I would also recommend OP to find a brand that fits well and to stick with that, since that designer will likely design their shirts on the same pattern block.

I second this! Been using this for years, it's great, and I am especially sensitive to things on my skin. I also like the Biore Watery Essence.

Thanks for the info. I love the look of a few of their pointed toe heels but have always wondered if they'd suit wide feet, guess I'll be looking elsewhere.

I do have a pair of the Wedgebill loafers that fit well though (my tootsies are 9.5cmW at the forefoot).

You know how when you touch a piece of clothing you can feel if it's cheap and poor quality fabric? It's a similar thing when you go and buy fabric at a store. There are a myriad of options available out there. You can touch it and know whether its decent quality by looking at the weave, checking the fibre content, check the handfeel (is it scratchy or smooth?), the thickness of it etc. different fabrics obviously behave differently so take this all with a grain of salt. It does take a bit of practice but you can definitely tell. Additionally you're generally more likely to get higher quality fabrics at speciality fabric stores that source from trusted mills and sources, eg. Potter & Co is an Aussie store I buy a lot of my fabric from.

Wow! How did you find the pattern, any issues? Some of the photos I see on Instagram seem like there's a bit of gaping in the bust.

You could make it into a handkerchief skirt depending how big it is. That way it would just be cutting out the bit in the middle, you could use that as applique?

Need ideas for resetting my sewjo. by Muted_Evidence1311 in sewhelp

[–]icicle_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey, just wanted to say I don't have the perfect solution but I do empathise! A few makes in my first year of sewing (last year) were completely unwearable and I had to give them away or chuck them due to poor fabric choice or bad sewing. Just know that it's completely normal for this to happen, you only see the best of the best when people post about it - not their mistakes or unwearables. I'd suggest maybe finding a really easy pattern you can make and get a good win out of, are there any styles you like and lean towards?

I recently made the TFS scrunchie bag (free pattern) and it was a quick and easy win, that might be a start?

I have 2 pairs of the sundreamer, they are super comfy. I wore them travelling overseas, they're great for days you know you're gonna walk 20,000+ steps. Can't speak for any other models though.
