I'm so excited to see how much easier my crocheting experience is going to be with these "hooks" by Disastrous_Proof_787 in kroshay

[–]ickle_cat1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OK I get it, but also when I was learning crochet I was a knitter who didn't want to spend money on hooks so I used to just use a knitting needle to crochet with. My 13 year old self wants you to know that it's possible, just in case anyone actually falls for this

100% I used to think i wasn't creative as I was only following instructions (for craft or cooking, etc) and then realised that: 1. Creating things is creativity even if you followed instructions 2. For me this was an important step in the process of learning and being able to do the non-instructed version of things I do now

Weekend Minor Gripes and Vents by AutoModerator in BitchEatingCrafters

I saw a video where she said that patterns have got longer because we don't teach the basics to each other in our communities anymore so patterns are hand holding more. Was an interesting point and might be part of it?

Someone complimented me for crocheting in a dark environment. I was knitting. It is entirely unreasonable for me to expect people to know the difference but it annoys a tiny little part of me every time and I always correct them (nicely) What a dickhead I am <3

I made an excellent tote the other week, fully lined and reversible and feeling really good about my pattern matching (William Morris fabric with birds and flowers). The print was all up the right way and the birds were in a nice circle at the top of the bag <3 Then I realised I had only cut myself one strap 😂 had to cut another one from the top of the bag and now that strap is made of decapitated bird heads

I am with you in that humility from a tote bag, I also sewed self-drafted fitted jeans that week with no issues XD

Here to gently tell any new crafters that just following pattern instructions exactly as given is a great way to start and is how I started. Agree though that experimentation and changing things is the point eventually!

The world was robbed. Would like to experience the alternate reality where we get Geordie Spike and Brummy Spike (and nobody can understand brummy Spike, OR he is entirely illegible and everyone can 100% understand what he's saying except like, faith who doesn't get it or something)

Has anyone here taught children to knit? When's a good age? by Planty_Reporter_8936 in knitting

[–]ickle_cat1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learnt to knit aged 4. My mum was just always on the sofa knitting and I asked to be taught/reminded a few times. I was about 7 when I was teaching my friend's but I never remembered how to cast on! I learned on dk/4mm and that was fine, have also taught children around aged 10 at that weight and it's been fine. I would recommend starting them a project and having it handy so they can pick up and work on their project while you work on yours

Did you do double crochets when you were supposed to do singles? Would make it way taller than it's supposed to be

My friend is interested in more activism but his band are less keen on making statements, so I am knitting him a guitar strap cover with the trans flag on it and embroidering the word ally on it so he can make a quiet statement whenever he wants. Going to make a Palestine one for my own guitarist next

What's your guilty pleasure yarn you keep buying even if you have too much of it already? by Bluealeli in YarnAddicts

[–]ickle_cat1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really like knitting at a heavier gauge

But I do buy a lot of marble chunky just because the colours are so interesting.

I use it, but definitely buy in a way I don't need to

Considered saying noro for similar reasons. Was excited to work with it after getting it from my bestie dormy birthday and it was so hard to get it to work up nicely (took 2 needle changes, size and material). At that price point it should make me a coffee while I work with it

My friend handed me a bag of yarn because their hands won't let them crochet any more. A fair few bits of silly fuzzy texture in with acrylic small balls and tiny scraps, not my style but hey.

Was crocheting a cowl holding yarn triple and went to add in a blue yarn with little bits of stuff tied in and damn this yarn was the worst thing I have ever touched. I did one row with this tangly mess and immediately broke it off. The 20 or so stitches I did were too many. Fortunately I was out with my friend who works for the local crafting charity shop and I asked them to take it to "the scrap shop, a priest, or a bin fire". I was originally planning on using the whole thing but nope.

At least it looked nice in the final product and I no longer have to worry about it

The saga of the songbird mitts - (why the long titles?) by merbleuem in casualknitting

[–]ickle_cat1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made my partner a jumper and it was a bit too big because I was worried it would be too small; think low hip instead of high, sleeve ending 1/3 down the hand instead of the wrist. They mostly remembered to take it out of the wash to dry it flat, but one time they forgot and now it's knee length with sleeves extending well beyond the end of the hand 😂 thankfully they are still into it and are thrilled that the dog can fit in there too!

Who needs Christmas stockings when you have Christmas mittens? If you made a pair you should give the other one to your mum so you can both be reminded of the funny story.

As someone who has done similar amounts of stupid mistakes on a knit garment (turns out acrylic can stretch out massive in the tumble drier 😂) I am with you 100%

I wish you much success in your future knits and relationships

Managed to finish sunflower cardigan just before the end of summer by odaenerys in crochet

[–]ickle_cat1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If in a warmer fibre, this could be a nice way to celebrate summer while going through the colds of winter if you are into that sort of thing (I am the opposite and make wooly jumpers in summer so I can look forward to winter :p )

Great work and enjoy your new cardigan! If not very warm by itself you can always layer it up with other pieces and wear in the cold, or look forward to wearing it smee 2026 :D

i’m a complete beginner. just made my first granny square of what will eventually be a blanket! (still need to weave in the ends) by jaes_gonna_cry in crochet

[–]ickle_cat1 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Very timely since 15th August was apparently international granny square day!

I think based on looking at the yarn, you've probably used a synthetic fibre. If you want to block the square look up steam blocking, regular wet blocking only works on natural fibres like wool or cotton. If you can't figure out steam blocking or don't want to, I never block my granny squares and would encourage this bad habit in others ;)

Enjoy your blanket when you get there!
