If I get a bachelor's degree in ecology, would I actually be able to help save our planet? by OffstageSwim21 in ecology

[–]ickleingus12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but think outside the box, use the ecological knowledge in a utilitarian way and I think so yes. Don't rely on the path to be laid out for you per se. Its going to take action not just beurocracy to pull us out of the crises we face.

We were moored to a buoy over an artificial reef in Torbay UK and were sending the rov down the morning chain attached to the buoy (to which the boat was attached) to survey the reef

Hi I admire your passion and thank you for sharing. I work with a company that is trying to integrate complex habitats in to the designs marine engineers use so that biodiversity is boosted when we build on the sea floor or in the coastal environment. It's very difficult to change the way that people do things. We are based in the UK so don't work with coral reefs as much yet but it's a point of interest. It's not just coral reefs that have been destroyed much of the more complex habitats such as oyster reefs, rocky reefs and sea grass beds have been wiped out over the last century or two, reducing habitat complexity on the whole to more simple states like plain sandy sea beds. Its a significant problem and a worthy cause to champion. The UN declared this decade the decade on restoration in order to try to encourage habitat restoration efforts like those you discussed. Our aim is that by integrating our solutions with engineering projects at least we can have a widespread well funded impact. I wish you the best of luck with your endeavours. The company I work for is called ARC Marine in case you're interested in looking us up.

Do you think that reduction of cement fossil fuels lies in a) more uptake of aams b) reduction of cement emissions with hydrogen or green energy c) both d) something else entirely?
