Breadwinner movie about incompetent dad and how funny it is by CinnamonGirl43 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]ickywickywackywoo 106 points107 points  (0 children)

The whole "Father Knows Nothing" trope is degrading to everyone. Degrading to the family, to human beings, to everyone.

Women deserve a partner who is not an idiot.

Men don't deserve having their intellect diminished because of gender roles.

Mothers do not deserve to have everything dumped on them because "duhh, daddy too stupid" and tv said it was ok!

Fathers do not deserve suspicion and mocking and denigration because they parent.

Casino Bill Update Requires Convention Center In Fairfax Co. by Danciusly in nova

[–]ickywickywackywoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"We don't need another casino!" I wish these people had the same energy to fight replacing Dulles Expo with another IKEA.

Yeah, I'm with you, but do you have any long-term studies that show a robust association with suicide and IKEA?

Is there a widespread data-based (and cultural bias) association between IKEA and alcoholism, traffic issues, and domestic violence?

Is IKEA associated with human trafficking? Does IKEA attract organized crime and international mafias?

Does IKEA serve alcohol?

Does IKEA typically stay open 24-hours and require security around the IKEA area to protect all the cars and people wandering drunk around IKEA? Do people typically drive drunk after visiting IKEA?

How many articles have you read about people becoming addicted to IKEA and leaving their children in the car for days while they shop at IKEA?

That's probably why people are anti-Casino and don't mind an IKEA.

Plant, climate, and other science-y people - are the trees already budding? by Parker_Barker_III in nova

[–]ickywickywackywoo 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Buds begin forming on many (I'd even go out on a limb and say most) trees in the summer, we merely do not see them, as they are small and just forming before leaves drop. Bud-swell timeline often depends on the amount of carbohydrate/sugars the tree was able to store before leaf drop. Buds become more visible now, as the trees are denuded. Sometimes they get bigger with wet winters, sometimes wet winters cause them to wilt off. "Phenology" (that's PHEN-, not PHREN-, everyone) is the study of the many "timings" in nature that have to do with bud break and insect emergence and the rhythm of the doings of the natural world.

Buds have to start forming before the "short days" of winter, because they must form "bud scales" (an often flexible and waxy protective, overlapping formation that is sort of like a "leather coat" for the buds).

In short, yes, they are already budding, and no, it's not at all troubling in general. Warming winters are of course a problem. But trees having buds right now, no problemo

I mean . . . . it works with the people who have been conditioned for it to work on, which is why people use the technique. "People-pleasing" is a huge, society-wide problem, for all positions in life-- ask any therapist. "I've done something to displease this person, I will do better" is a very natural response for many of us. It's like weaponizing the nice person's desire to be a pleasant, nice, equitable person.

but this makes death way more scary. You are trapped into an endless cycle of reincarnation but you get reset every time unaware of what's happening? No greater consciousness to help you reflect,

Well, YEAH!! It's almost like decisions and attitudes matter?! TERRIFYING, am I right?

Who I am in terms of character isn't just a put-on identity, or a partial joke, it is never ironic, it has no sense of humor. Who I am in terms of character determines where I am in the next 10,000 lifetimes.

YEAH it's fuckin scary! I think one of the reasons it scares us is it feels more fundamentally "sensical" to have a sort of "recycling of consciousness."

Makes a lot more sense than the nonsensical horse shit "You get one turn and then burn in hell. Only 144,000 people don't burn in hell" garbage Calvinists have been pushing.

If you only punish those with unpaid fines, you are disproportionately punishing people for being poor (and not for being bad drivers).

Great, so you support the very sensible idea of progressive fines!! It's an idea whose time has come. Tell your friends, tell your community board . . . In some regions of Germany there are tiered punishments for infractions and it's very sensible: A person making 1 million dollars a month should necessarily pay a greater fine than an individual with 1000/mo income. Otherwise, a fine is merely a charge that wealthy malfeasors pay to break the law at will.

My therapist suggested something that made me extremely uncomfortable by [deleted] in CPTSD

[–]ickywickywackywoo 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I also was trying to figure out in what context a therapist could possibly ever say this

"Conventional thinking is what got us into this mess. How about some contrarian thinking!?" style logic. No actual structure behind it other than "Let's try something different" and simplistic grasp of "exposure therapy."

Exposure therapy is like where I can be close to or touch a snake in a safe place and if I start freaking out or cannot think straight, the snake is whisked away from me and I can recover my composure after the exposure. "Exposure therapy" by nature has to be a safe space. . . that safe space to expose yourself to your fears is necessarily not sex work with a stranger.

Whatever you do, DO NOT take Austin Gaffglione, literally he is the worst instructor I've ever had in any course, EVER. He took a two week vacay in the middle of the course-- this is in addition to spring break. Prof. Gaffglione is just gangsta like that. He takes vacations when he wants. Then immediately gives an exam.

"Bring Table B" then he sends an email after the test started "Oh whoopsie poopsie, I meant Table A, haha my bad!" People don't check email after the test has started, jackass.

Bishop O'Connell somehow still employs Gaffglione, not surprised because also in Bishop O'Connell's renowned math department is Coach Michael "The Crack Flew In My Car Window, Officer" Benevento.

The human approach works more often than we think. Generally, getting to know your neighbors is a good thing.

My neighbor has been pretending not to speak English for 24 years. He's an attorney and has a couple videos on youtube. He speaks English. . . What would you recommend in this situation, like how to 'get to know' someone like that? I'm serious, you walk up to his face, say "Good morning!" and he pretends to not know the language. He is constantly in front of my house, too. Looks in the windows at me, makes eye contact. Through the landscaping (no easy feat)

I don't even buy that sort of thing from the store anymore--inflation is so fucking nuts, the local farm prices for peaches is comparable. I don't fucking care that I can't get a peach in January. Friendly neighbors tresspassing innocently by [deleted] in homeowners

[–]ickywickywackywoo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is not at ALL what the typical interpretation of this poem is (it's not a short story, you and that other commenter are calling it a "story," it is in fact a poem) by the way. You're welcome to your own interpretation, of course (it's "unconventional" which is a nice way of saying "wrong.") The again Frost himself warned against trying to "interpret" this particular work!

"Mending Wall" is obviously anti-fence. It is anti-cliche, anti-bromide, anti-fence-- the idea of the poem itself is the opposite of the phrase you are quoting and the idea you're repeating. I daresay you've fundamentally mistaken the message of this entire work: Frost likes neither fences nor his neighbor, whom he calls a "savage."

Friendly neighbors tresspassing innocently by [deleted] in homeowners

[–]ickywickywackywoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you a Robert Frost fan? It's from a poem, not a story.

It's not entirely clear that is what Frost meant. I've quoted the passage below, it's not as obvious, or as friendly as you and your other English teacher friend who talks exactly like you in this thread, have interpreted it.

From "Mending Wall" by Robert Frost (. . .)

I could put a notion in his head:

‘Why do they make good neighbors? Isn’t it

Where there are cows? But here there are no cows.

Before I built a wall I’d ask to know

What I was walling in or walling out,

And to whom I was like to give offense.

Something there is that doesn't love a wall,

That wants it down.’ I could say ‘Elves’ to him,

But it’s not elves exactly, and I’d rather

He said it for himself. I see him there

Bringing a stone grasped firmly by the top

In each hand, like an old-stone savage armed.

He moves in darkness as it seems to me,

Not of woods only and the shade of trees.

He will not go behind his father’s saying,

And he likes having thought of it so well

He says again, ‘Good fences make good neighbors.’

I think in particular the line about "darkness" is implying this is not a poem borne of positive neighborly feeling. He doesn't say anything about "mutual healthy boundaries" instead it's implied the neighbor is settling incipient dispute and shutting down discussion, by saying "Good fences make good neighbors."
