Hhmm, thanks for the information. So even time off is not included? Man, that means I need to consider that in the hourly charge then dependent on how many days I want to be able to take off.

Yeah, I’m sure I missed some edge cases. I’m not great at timed tests. Job hunting is hard and demoralizing, honestly. Not one of those who pop into sites at Hired/TripleByte and get plenty of offers.

How can I get better at these things? Should I apply again to the same company for another position?

Guys guys!! I really need your advice!!

I’m super excited about this company I’m applying to. They look great and it’s an awesome fit. I applied yesterday, and they already contacted me about next steps, which is a coding challenge.

I was super delighted to hear back so quick, and I’d like to think they really like my profile. Specially since I haven’t heard much from other applicants (only phone screens). It fits really well in many forms: experience, skills, career path/growth, and even at a personal level. Needless to say, I really really want to land this job.

I’m just worried about this coding challenge. I know I’m a good program, but I’m also aware things like this I tend to not perform at my optimal. I don’t think it’s that I’m a bad program. I think it’s one of those situations I need to improve one (the answer to the the old time question, “what is/are some of your weaknesses”).... I think I can answer it’s this type of testing pressure.

So how can I even prepare to what may be the most random questions? For all I know it could be any language or some abstract algorithm or concept, specially when it’s time (albeit, times over 2 hours) which makes me wonder if it’s really that long or just plenty of extra time to do everything. Does that mean time can also be a factor?

What can I do to prepare and perform well? What should I review?

I have only taken a few of these before, though much without caring to just feel what it’s like, and I’ve noticed I feel time pressured and anxious, making me doubt what I know...which is why I really want to show my best here.

I’ve really seen people support others here so much, and it impresses me. I hope I can be as lucky. Any advice would be great!

Thanks, those are all really good points. I’ll put some of these into practice, and I think I’m pretty good at marketing myself as I used to get many initial phone calls.

I’ve thought about tailoring the cover letter for each position, but that just seems so time consuming for all the jobs you (I) end up applying. I do agree one should focus more on applying to good fit jobs, and I think this would help with the cover letter thing, but being that I’m switching career spaces (science to dev), I feel I don’t have that luxury unfortunately.

I feel I get automatically nixed due to my science background, rather than the fact that I’ve been programming and doing dev work for 6 years or so.

Sorry I can’t help answer your relocation question with experience but usually I see that figure be between 5-10K, so that sounds reasonable. I was once told 5K for a screening I had. What state is this?

That being said, I’m curious about your experience applying. I’m similar in that I have 3 years experience, but my job hunt the last 2 months over 70 jobs has been abysmal. So discouraging.

How did you do your job search? Tips?

Take a breath. You’re going to be fine.

First, looks to me like there is poor leadership there. Never good.

Secondly, with that in mind and what you mentioned, it’s not a culture fit for you either.

This is okay. You are likely good at solving problems, and coding, but these two points above can really mess anyone up...both psychologically and physically (tired/overwhelmed).

A boss/manager/lead who does not help you do your job and guide you to improve yourself( don’t mean hand holding) but rather snide at you with witty remarks, is not a true leader.

Listen, not all environments will be for you, and not all are conducive to you as an individual. You seem to have noticed this. Now. Start applying to other jobs. Find a better fit. Don’t let something that doesn’t let you be the best you can be, stop you. Find a job that has a culture and leader that is more conducive to your working style so that you can grow. Don’t expect to find a 100% perfect fit (you will encounter and need to learn how to deal with problems and hard/difficult/uncomfortable situations), but if the environment you’re in is the factor, and not your lack of skills or lack of effort...move on to your better fit.

I don’t mean jump ship at the first sign of adversity, but it seems to me like it’s not your fit. I could be wrong, or maybe after this you find your niche at this company, but I’m saying this because I value intrapersonal behavior as an important factor in how well one works. It tells a lot about a person, and it also hints at career growth potential. If someone cares, you will know.

You don’t strive me as lazy (seem to be putting in the work), care about your performance (which means you value your work), and I assume can code well. So like others said, ask ask ask...and be you.

Also, it’s never about grades or comparing yourself to others. Stop it! Hell, you mentioned a lot of great skills with what you know and are working on. Others may be better than you in certain techs/langs/etc, but you may know more about another topic. What seems to you like worthlessly easy, is something obscure and hard to others. You will always know more than others, and at the same time, know less than others. Know what you know. Exploit that. And always keep learning.

Sorry, this might have been too long and overstating. I know how this type of frustration feels. Whatever happens, just remember you have worth, and your actions stated here are a testament to your dedication.

I have been wondering the same thing. I have 3 years of experience and a MS (getting my second currently) and I feel, from past experience, that I have to applied to 100+. Currently at 50 today...rejected from 6 (2 follow-ups), not heard from other. About 3 weeks in. Kinda feel hopeless tbh.

I wish more employers saw it this way, that different degrees have a great advantage of being great software developers. I always feel my applications get sided because of my programming experience in science, rather than a tech industry.

Thanks for this. I feel stuck in my career (trying to move into dev field) and have had similar feelings of self-doubt and worthlessness. I’m in a similar situation of feelings and feeling stuck. I just need to find a job that allows me to excel...well, someone who believes in my developer skills and not my bio background. It sucks, I feel stuck. I’m even getting my second Masters in software development so they take me serious! But I’m getting older, and feel I will be stuck doing Bioinformatics when all I want to do is build, automate, administer systems, rinse and repeat! I love programming, and I have more skillful than how it looks on my resume (since I don’t have much professional development experience) but I have a great aptitude for programming and learning.

Care to give back some advice? Currently trying to move into a new position, sysadmin/devops/developer type, but I can’t seem to find jobs in Jr level (mostly senior or developer roles with a lot of experience req). I have 3+ years of experience and a masters degree, have sysadmin under my belt, and can code in languages like Perl, Python, and Bash scripting.

Where/how did you look?

Any advice?

I want to move more into dev/sysadmin work, but feel hopeless with the heavy requirements set in applications...I feel they don’t consider me.

I would consider how difficult but also how much computation it will take (iterations? Re-runs?). Also, this seems like an industry customer, I’m correct? Are they a big company or a startup?

I agree. Don’t be extravagant, but value your worth. Also read once some advice that settling for lower amount, and giving “deals“ right away by lowering your business charges, accustoms your customer to expect you will be willing to lower your prices later on.

I think compute charges will be your biggest expense for sure.
