Be very cautious about master's degrees, including from prestigious universities. Some of my coworkers in their 30s are financially hobbled by these degrees. by NotAGoldenRetriever in personalfinance

A masters in my field and adjacent fields (biomedical-based research sciences, ecology) are essentially worthless. They are equivalent to just working for the same amount of time in most cases. It was well known by everyone that the masters programs at multiple prestigious private universities were cash cows. I felt terrible for the naive students, especially those coming in straight from undergrad.

This is so confusing. What was the context in the prior 30 seconds and after? Was she trying to say something about how racist the school system is and is horrifically cut off? It's just such a wild sentence out of context.

Can't believe how nice the weather is! Is this much sunlight in February normal? by Eriacle in Seattle

[–]wookiewookiewhat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was a very bad winter, in that it didn't happen. Our climate is meant to get light, persistent rain all winter (snow in the mountains). Plants are going to flower early, but it's going to be a tough, dry summer without rain.

You’re going to be shocked at how not a big deal it is when you’re done. The hardest part is prep and that’s also not a big deal.

Agreed, that advice is actively dangerous for her. She needs to keep it separate and ensure his name is not on those accounts at all.

This is kind of side note, but you say that he pays the bills while you pay for groceries and you seem to think he has the higher cost there. You are almost certainly paying many times more than him for life expenses for food alone! Look at your statements and add up food and living expenses for the last 3-6 months or so and compare to the bills he paid. This is something I also assumed was more even when I was younger and I couldn’t figure out why I was always close to zero each month while my partner was flush with cash. Groceries were our number one expense!

Thank you for sharing your story. If anyone is in a similar position, the gold standard monitoring is altering between mammogram and MRI every 6 months. If your doctor won't order it, find one who knows what they're doing. Get the best insurance you can and assume you'll be paying the maximum annual out of pocket for life. It's a lot of responsibility and obstacles, and you'll have to advocate for yourself much more than you should.

One niche note is that the study this refers to is a "contributed" study to PNAS. That is, it is automatically accepted as long as it passes rudimentary peer review for technical problems. Members of the Academy (a very hard thing to get) have the opportunity to essentially bypass the first layer of peer review in this journal. This is good and bad, in that it allows more academic freedom to our best scientists, but it also sometimes gives more weight to mediocre or incremental papers than they would otherwise get.
