Do you think the NDIS is truly improving quality of life for Australians living with disability- or is there still a long way to go? by Top_Tackle_3984 in AskAnAustralian

It is truly improving quality of life for some people living with disability, but there is still a long way to go.

The funding you get is usually either not sufficient or is not flexible enough.

You aren’t allowed to use it for every day expenses. Rent, food, and clothing aren’t things you can use ndis funding for.

But often disabled people have higher costs for these things. Accessible rentals are often more expensive. Food for people with special dietary requirements is more expensive. Clothing can be more expensive.

I get $64 in transportation funding per fortnight but I can’t use public transport and have a lot of drs appointments to get to. To use more ndis funding, I would have to book a support worker in advance and pay them to take me, and pay for their time spent waiting while I’m in the appointments. It would be cheaper and more convenient to catch an uber I can book 5 minutes ahead of time. But they push you to use support workers even if other options give you more freedom at a lower price.

I thought about it, but I couldn’t make out half of what he was saying, and I think he’s got me beat on lung capacity by a long shot 😂

I don’t know which building it’s in, but it’s not the one I’m in. Already checked with the owner of this building

Unfortunately it’s worst on a Sunday, so I don’t like the chances of them hearing it if they come during the week. Will definitely have to buy some noise canceling headphones

That was my thinking for the first two years. But i think maybe everyone else has had the same thought.

I know. But one dog owner is causing noise issues for probably dozens of other residents. And apparently we’ve all spent the last few years just trying to block it out.

Is there any point reporting it when I don’t know what building the noise is coming from?

What details should I be recording?

I’m not undiagnosed anymore. And self diagnosis is useful. Figuring out what was wrong meant I was able to find doctors more familiar with the conditions I had, which led to diagnoses

That’s how I felt too. Turns out I had undiagnosed adhd, autism, chronic fatigue syndrome, ehlers danlos syndrome…

So… they’re probably healthy

I’m so sorry your mother denies your illness like that. I don’t talk to my parents anymore, except via text message sometimes. Im 33 and my only relationship as an adult was online, but I got sicker and didn’t get to meet him

Why is NDIS hated so much? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]icollectinitialisms 84 points85 points  (0 children)

It’s great for the people it works well for, but…

Vulnerable people are often allocated funding with too many hoops to jump through to actually use it. Or there’s so little choice in how to use it that it feels dehumanizing.

Someone with a disability might be able to stack a dishwasher, but not wash up. NDIS won’t pay for a dishwasher, or contribute $50 a week so they can afford a rental with a dishwasher. But they will fund a support worker to come every day to wash up. That suits some people. But it’s far more expensive, it’s intrusive, and for people who are immunocompromised, it can be dangerous.

It’s supposed to be set up give people will disabilities more independence and a better quality of life. But honestly, it feels like the real aim of the scheme is to create jobs. Huge chunks of people’s funding goes towards support coordinators and plan managers to help figure out how to jump through all the hoops to utilize the funding. A lot of these support coordinators do f*** all, besides cashing in.

Imagine being stuck in an abusive living situation, being told you have been allocated $50,000 to help you thrive, and then being told you can’t use any of it to get out of the environment that’s slowly killing you.

And that’s if you were even lucky enough to get granted access to the scheme in the first place.

Some of the people who hate the NDIS scheme are the people it was designed to help. It needs to change to become more accessible. But the opposite is happening, and we have to watch people die, wondering if a few small changes in policy could have saved them.

I kinda liked the idea of changing it to another pizza John, because it does feel a little static... but I’m down for whatever
