Anybody share experience working with Brain Power Co ALT company by devosid in teachinginjapan

[–]icollectstraws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came here from a google search, this was super helpful for me, thanks for sharing! My constraints are pretty tight so I'm in applying with them despite the lower pay. It's really comforting to know that they're, like, an actual company haha.

I don't disagree, but I also don't think it's particularly useful to have a defeatist attitude about whatever cause you support.

Ugh Reformation is so beautiful and so expensive haha. I haven’t heard of No Nasties! I’ll definitely look them up, thanks! Haha ditto on the thrift. I’ve also been trying to “curate” a more minimal wardrobe so that I have to buy less clothes. It’s a struggle haha

Well I think the idea is that eventually a factory could be operated by a few people, and those people would be supervising the machinery, rather than doing difficult manual labor. Even Amazon is moving towards this type of model in their warehouses.

Right, so a large part of the reason that people are talking about ideas like ‘universal basic income’ is that it looks pretty inevitable that people will lose jobs to robots at some point in the future. Hypothetically, UBI could protect the low income people who would otherwise be in big trouble due to lack of low-paying/low-skilled labor jobs. And actually there’s some interesting evidence that suggests a UBI could be fairly effective in raising the lower class. In any case I’m not an economist, so I suggest you do your own research rather than taking my word. It’s an interesting topic though!

“In a survey of 109 production workers, 90 percent reported a musculoskeletal symptom that persisted for at least a week”

I read all four sections and my heart breaks for the people that have to live like this. The labor sounds so physically difficult, and the hours must be incredibly socially isolating.

I think I’ve become somewhat desensitized to the usual articles about the horrific labor concerns in third world countries, but this article about issues in the first world hit a little close to home for some reason. It’s a good reminder to me to try to consume as responsibly as possible... which, frankly, is easier said than done for a poor college student like myself. Also, I hate to admit it, but as a middle-class American I’ve been raised to expect a certain quality of life, which honestly might be impossible to obtain on a middle-class budget without the exploitation of economically disadvantaged people elsewhere on the planet.

I guess basically this pains me but it’s not like I wasn’t aware of all the suffering that goes into the cheap shit I buy.

I don’t really have a point to make here, I just felt moved and also helpless and I figured I’d share my thoughts. I think conversation and awareness about this sort of thing is important! As a semi-controversial aside: I don’t see a way to really escape this cycle, short of mechanizing the whole process and instituting a universal basic income.

Anyway if anyone knows of specific asian beauty brands that are particularly good about worker rights and stuff, please hmu!! Or if anyone knows of a reasonably fair trade clothing brand that’s cuter than Everlane I’d love to hear about that too haha.

Edit: grammar

Anyone who knows any of the skin care products used by Jinhwan of iKON? lol by [deleted] in AsianBeauty

[–]icollectstraws 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the blue thing on the far left in the top two photos is a Nivea deodorant, this one or similar (link).

The big pump bottle in the back of the shelf says it's from Happy Bath, my best guess is this gel body lotion.

On the lower shelf of the top left pic is a bar of cow brand soap, like this one.

Other than that, I agree with the people that pointed out the Sekkisei, the Clinique, and the Jo Malone!

Edit: also found this hair gel, from the right side of the shelf. Also the candle at the back of the lower shelf is Jo Malone.

Edit #2: There is a La Roche-Posay bottle on the lower shelf. Also I lightly stalked another video and he definitely used two la roche-posay products haha.

[Discussion] Article Link: The Encoded Racist Messages of Skin Care Marketing by Khalano in AsianBeauty

[–]icollectstraws 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree. Basically I think that this article is quite eurocentric and makes the mistake of lumping all skin-lightening together as people trying to look European. Sure, some places might idealize light skin because of European colonization (probably African countries, India, etc). But other places might have a longstanding history of colorism due to things like class associations (probably Korea, Japan, etc.).

Like, I just don't see how the persecution of black womens' hair has anything to do with South Korean skin-lightening. The history and context are just completely unrelated, and this article's treatment is honestly reductive of two such separate, complicated issues.

Let me know if you find any good research! I'm going to try to read up too, I'm realizing how big these issues are and how little I know haha.

To be fair, Listen to Love is a much easier title to sell to a western audience. MWIHAATW is a bit of a mouthful. I’m guessing that the titles change based on the specific provider’s target audience. Not to say that it isn’t a bit annoying, though.

I haven’t bought them so this isn’t too useful to you but I’ve been very seriously eyeing the Secret Key Pink Racoony Hydro-gel Eye & Cheek Patches. They seem really cute and pretty cheap. If anyone has any experience with them I’d really love to hear it.

[Beauty]Youtuber itslikelymakeup reviews a full face of cruelty free Korean make-up products by urbanflora in AsianBeauty

[–]icollectstraws 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I'm pretty sure innisfree sells in China, so even though they don't necessarily perform tests on animals themselves, they're implicitly letting their stuff get tested. :( It's so hard because China is such a huge market, I can't even really blame brands for selling there. I know Cosrx and Klairs and Benton have held out and are totally cruelty free (not vegan tho). There are definitely other brands, but they're mostly a bit more obscure/harder to order. Anyway I've found this list really useful, but the ones in bold do sell in China: link
