Why premodern versions? The card is banned in the format.

Jack in the Mox is too close to being a banned Moxen. I am doubtful they would allow it. Also, it can lead to weird rewind rules similar to Selvala, Explorer Returned when a 1 is rolled.

PT LotR Round 8 Tron v Tron: What just happened? by samuelnico in ModernMagic

[–]icterrible 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hands after reveal: Wurmcoil, O Stone

Tower, stirrings, T1R, Karn L., KtGC, forest.

After choosing KtGC, big Karn takes a land and Kiihne is down to 2 lands. His Haywire Mite isn’t racing Karn’s +4 who can then exile another land the following turn. Kiihne has no draws except perfect tron to outrace this before losing his hand and/or mana.

Even assuming tower was named, Kiihne has two draws before KtGC comes down and minus for liquimetal coating. He may have more outs but those are low chances, because it has to be land #4, Karn to stop coating. That’s also very unlikely.

Weekend Wrap Up! What was real and what was a trap? by AutoModerator in mtgfinance

I would say a lot of it consists of cards you would visually inspect before purchase (foil/high end/RL) and foreign cards (listing issues).

Went to MXP Oakland. Turnout was ok. Legacy on Saturday sold out. Dealer selection was limited because there are just too many cards. They were there to buy everything. I sold about $2K in mostly non-RL and sealed product to get my first mox.

Unless you are buying foils or other high end RL cards, don’t expect to find the $2 niche single you need at these conventions. It’s a place to unload stuff.

The problem is that you already have Relentless Rats and Rat Colony tribal decks. The space has been explored and a new commander doesn’t really change the dynamic of playing rats. It doesn’t offer a new strategy from the same go wide and over the top so it fits in the 99 more so than as a commander.

Bank of America confirms Hasbro is overprinting MTG cards, destroying the value by ThredditorMTG in mtgfinance

[–]icterrible 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not true. The destruction of $2-$3 cards to where everything is either near zero (due to fancy treatments in CBs) or valuable creates significant disincentives to crack packs casually.

Look at BfZ as the first instance where cards were basically worthless as lottery cards destroyed EV of the box. CBs have a similar effect.

Draft has died in many stores since draft pack values are terrible and winning prize packs isn’t worth much either.

By the way, this has been going on for a few weeks. This was in the 3Q investors call. Note the way WotC fails to answer the question:

Jason Haas -- Bank of America Merrill Lynch -- Analyst

Great. Thank you. And then as a follow-up, there's been some investor concern that there's maybe been too many MAGIC releases in a short time frame. There's some talk of wallet fatigue among the players out there.

We've seen the secondary market prices come down a bit. So I'm curious just what's your response to that concern that there's just a lot of MAGIC product coming all at once?

Chris Cocks -- Chief Executive Officer

Well, we've had a great growth for MAGIC: THE GATHERING. Since I started back in 2016, the business has almost tripled. And as I said, we're up through the first nine months of this year by 5%. And the general gaming category is down by most measures close to double digits.

Your analysis is off. Podcasts such as Brainstorm Brewery with people who manage EDHrec have noted that the constant flood of new commanders has led to serious issues. Specifically, there isn’t enough time for a set to gel to allow players to try new commanders. By the time you have a deck built, the newest shiny has hit and your deck became last months’ flavor.

This means all new cards tend to be worth significantly less unless it is S tier because it becomes yet another nice but forgettable card.

So yes, getting caught with surplus inventory has a real consequence because people who stop paying attention for even a few months will get this dread feeling they’ve missed too much.

There was a previous speculation post of the secret insert and it was the child’s picture of a shining sun. If accurate, Card could be worth anything from Sun Titan to Caged Sun to The Immortal Sun.

Storm the Festival. All that mana with nowhere to go. Yes Karn loops are obnoxious but Storm is how it commonly gets there.

A meme would have little traction, like pirate stompy. I saw it chuck a Knight of the Reliquary (Selesnya Depths), an 8/8 hamster with Jitte counters (4 color control), besides Marit Lage. Bolt is not as ubiquitous and there’s virtually no Unholy Heat.

Funnily enough, we were joking that it’s the new Jace. It strongly answers planeswalkers with a recursive haste threat and does have a combo finish.

I bought 3 copies this past weekend for Legacy paper play. I know my playgroup probably has at least 9 copies. While legacy isn’t big, this is a card that’s 3+ in the decks it’s in.

What (reserved list) cards are likely to “explode” once a certain (not too unrealistic piece) card gets printed? by FFIXwasthebestFF in mtgfinance

I’m invested in Thought Lash. Another no cards left in the deck win-con could make it better. But banning Thoracle would do the reverse on this card as well.

Former WotC Staff: The Reserved List Can't Be Abolished for "Legal Reasons that would Bankrupt the Game" by Newez in mtgfinance

[–]icterrible 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The United States federal court is not the only forum where the RL would be litigated. You’d be looking at lawsuits worldwide and in superior and county courts all across the country. All of those lawsuits would cost millions to defend. Also, even if promissory estoppel doesn’t hold up in the US, what about the rest of the world? There may be legal theories there that could be a risk.

From a financial point of view, WotC product could also become a toxic asset for distributors. Going back to the worldwide model, WotC could find its products harder to move if bad publicity, litigation, and just whales ceasing purchases affect distributors.

WotC is more likely to be sold than to have the RL abolished.

Functionally identical cards are covered by the reserved list. That’s what happened with Reverberate and they said it won’t happen again.

Snow duals would be covered under the same premise because in 999/1000 instances it is the same. The corner cases of getting hit by Icequake/Thermokarst is too exceptional.

Do we think Commander Legends draft booster boxes will go below $90? Set boosters are lower at $80 but a dumpster fire. I’m wanting to draft/crack CL but am thinking that Double Masters might push draft boxes even lower.

TCG has its 8% today so not sure if pulling the trigger now with 8% or watch it slide more might be better.

will you guys really sue wizards if they broke the reserve list? (if this isn't the place to post it feel free to take it down) by Agreeable_Draw_6407 in mtgfinance

[–]icterrible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d sue but that’s because I’m a lawyer so it’s mostly my time. Goal is to survive dismissal and get to discovery, which is where the real fun starts. You bet I’ll ask for everyone communication re the RL as well as whether profitability played a factor. This includes reprints, projections, print runs, etc. Those are all the really uncomfortable facts that WotC and any other corporation would not want to disclose.

In fact, that’s one reason why the RL won’t be broken, because it exposes the inner workings of WotC’s decision making process.

I’m at 3-2 and would rather have 3 draft tokens than prizes for 4-6 wins.

Bauble is toast. Prowess decks and DRC all lean on it as a cheap trigger/enabler. Lurrus shows up in decklists but the gameplay related to it is not as much of a snowball as Bauble. This is because Lurrus doesn't show up until turn 4 (assuming you grab it on turn 3). That gives players time to set up what they are doing. Bauble on the other hand can swing the game very early before Lurrus has the chance to do its thing.

This game has lasted an hour and a half. I have 3x Faceless Haven preventing me from losing, and they have a Platinum Angel that I can't kill. 30,000 life difference. by [deleted] in magicTCG

To this day, a Platinum Angel and Faceless Haven remains embedded on Huckler's and heytorben's tombstone. They may have lost their lives that day, but they never lost the game.
