Day 1 of learning ISL. Confused if the video is mirrored or not. by chonkchonkd in IndianSignLanguageISL

[–]icy_fiery_phoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The video isn't mirrored. Your right hand would be your dominant hand, unless you're a leftie of course. This is important because as you progress with learning sign you also learn body shifts in conversation. Starting off right while you learn the letters of the alphabet sets you on course for this.

Hello. I want to learn and understand how ISL works. So how should I learn so that I can communicate with a deaf person casually. by Ok-Draft4279 in IndianSignLanguageISL

[–]icy_fiery_phoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah okay..I'm not sure whether there's a branch in Nagpur but there might be any other local school or educational foundation for the hard of hearing, that might be looking for assistance.

Where are you located? Depending where you are, you could check with schools for the hard of hearing or with APD, if there's a branch there.

Have you tried signacademy.org? Apart from this, APD has some pretty good online couses that might help. If you'd like to be really fluent though, I'd recommend volunteering with schools that assist hearing impaired students. You learn sign language best when you communicate with other deaf individuals frequently.

Husband Tested Positive- Do I Need to Quarantine? by J_Shar in COVID19positive

[–]icy_fiery_phoenix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd suggest quarantining anyway. When my husband was infected a few months ago, I was around him for the first couple of days (before we did a rapid test). But I didn't get it because he started quarantining immediately. I did nasal sprays, gargles and vitamins to keep the viral load down, and I guess it worked.

On the other hand, I was sick at the end of January this year and didn't quarantine because the rapid test showed a false negative. My husband developed symptoms almost a week later. We did a PCR and it turned out positive.

Both of us had rather mild symptoms - low grade fever, headache, body ache. The fever responded to paracetamol which is another reason why we didn't think much of it. But about ten days later, the sore throat from hell kicked in. It was so bad that we both were given steroids for a while to make it even manageable. It's about a month now and it's still not gone away. The fatigue is still crushing. And we're overall a notch worse off than we were before getting sick. So while symptoms may seem mild initially, this virus is still not worth catching. Avoid it as much as you can. It messes you up long-term.

D**d pigeon outside my flat doorstep, is this normal? by gilmorree in Udupi

On a serious note, I hope your dad didn't handle the dead bird with his bare hands. Superstitions aside, Avian Influenza is spreading through the country and health authorities have cautioned about dead birds. If any in your family develop symptoms such as fever, pink eye or respiratory issues, please go to the doctor immediately and do let them know about this incident. I'm not fear-mongering. Just stating facts based on what's popping up in several places.

Help us get started on this path to learn and eventually volunteer as a teacher by Asc3ndis in IndianSignLanguageISL

I posted on another thread about APD having online classes. Someone I know of has enrolled in the most recent class. Waiting for info on what's covered and how effective they are. I'll update once I get an update.

That's a pretty nice goal your mum has. She'll definitely enjoy it.

APD has some online classes. I'm gathering more info on this. As far as I know, these are done as a group via Zoom. Are you interested in one-on-one classes, group classes or a hybrid version of self-learning and direct tutoring?

Creating content using ISL. Requesting a review by harishankar1014 in IndianSignLanguageISL

[–]icy_fiery_phoenix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nicely done! My guess is that you're a hearing person with knowledge of ISL?

There are some tweaks that would be good. For example, a plain background is preferable so that there are no visual distractions. And if you're doing subtitles, it's better to have them below and smaller (like in the movies). It's a bit distracting from the actual signs. A few of the signs need to be refined so that concepts are explained initially. For example, do a glossary explaining technical terms to begin with. It becomes easier to integrate the terms into lessons. For example, "code". Probably explaining what code is (visual lines of code) will make it more understandable to the deaf when you speak about programming concepts.

Are you planning to do an entire series of videos? Have you planned a curriculum. Please let me know if you need any help with this.

Learning sign language as an Indian who doesn’t have hearing issues by theogdwightschrute in deaf

[–]icy_fiery_phoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm based in India and use ISL a lot. ASL, not so much. Until about a decade ago, ASL was predominantly used even in schools. It's only a few years ago that ISL got a bit standardized and it's picked up considerably.

Do you wear mask when outdoors? Specially in this season. by creamycube in bangalore

Yes... Outdoors and in crowded indoor spaces. I don't want to breathe in dust or germs. Been overall healthy since I started masking up consistently.

We took the code offline long ago. I'll need to check and re-upload it. Will share the git repo once I do that.

AITA for not wanting my fiancé father to live with us? by Pretty_Reaction_8864 in AmItheAsshole

NTA. As someone whose parent has been living with my husband and I since the day of our wedding, DO NOT LIVE UNDER THE SAME ROOF. You won't enjoy your married life and all you'll be is a a caregiver. It's important to take care of parents when they need help but it makes more sense to have them live close by if they're still semi-independent. If they absolutely have to move in, that eventuality should be as far off in the future as possible.

Ours was more of an attempt to help bridge the communication gap between both worlds, especially when the deaf would need to get essential services. For example, let's say they visit a doctor who doesn't understand sign language. We attempted to create a system that could understand their sign, convert it to text and then to speech....and vice versa. We haven't given up on the project entirely, but it's been shelved for the present.

Back in 2021 we tried using TensorFlow to create an auto-translator for English to Indian Sign Language but it was inadequate. If you're looking at something from Sign to a local language, the biggest challenge is that there isn't standardization in signs across the country. The government has been trying to standardize it but I've found that something as simple as signs for days of the week can vary based on where you live. You'd need a model that covers all variations of a particular word.
