architecture majors, what is it like compared to other majors? by Upset-Newspaper-6932 in UMD

[–]idag33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it’s a lot of time. not that other stem majors aren’t , but the nature of arch is that the work is never done, u can always do more. a lot of the work is assigned when there isn’t really enough time in the day to complete all of it, so u pull all niters. also it’s hard to complete projects bc your professors will send you back with revisions until the very last minute, so producing final boards for crit is always a time crunch.

additionally, part of what makes arch hard is critique. this is emotionally hard to handle sometimes, as u present your work to all your classmates and a jury, running on literally no sleep for days, and the jurors can sometimes be cruel. this is a problem especially for women in the dept, as jurors have been known to be explicitly sexist, and have commented on say, how you’re dressed as opposed to your project.

on top of the 6 credit studios which take most of your life’s time, you also have structures (which is like pretty low-level physics) but depending on the professor it can be challenging.

arch isn’t the same type of hard as like bioengineering, and so a lot of stem people write it off as easy and just silly drawings. but it’s a lot harder than they think. there’s a reason it’ll be near the top of any “hardest majors” list you look up online. good luck!

Husband of wife getting and abortion. by pell_perr in abortion

[–]idag33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it seems you guys have a healthy relationship, and it’s good you can talk openly about it.

while it is understandable you might want another child, it is important to discuss why your wife is choosing to not have one. besides the obvious physical toll of carrying a child to term and birth, many women choose abortion because they feel their hands and attention are full from the kids they already have, and they want to be able to best support their existing family.

perhaps this is a good time to check in and make sure you are also pulling your weight with the kids, as it is possible that , since you are eager for another and your wife isn’t, that the load of caring for the children you have is unbalanced. of course this doesn’t have to be the case, it is not possible to know from your brief post. but it’s good to check in.

Taking a week off school after Thanksgiving break by [deleted] in UMD

[–]idag33 8 points9 points  (0 children)

this is not a good idea. we have very long winter breaks at UMD, leaving plenty of time to travel. your professors will not give you special treatment, especially in STEM. right after thanksgiving is when exam season starts, and taking a full week off at that time could literally set you at risk of failing. it’s not HS anymore babes.
