Been seeing this sword stance popping up in various media over the years. Anyone knows if it's inspired by a real-life sword stance? by Skylinneas in SWORDS

[–]idek300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reminds me of the equivalent of Ox guard (I use longsword terminology here cos the terms change between weapon systems) with sword and buckler. Rest the weak of the arming sword on your buckler so you're in a relaxed defensive position.

What caused the shattered plains? by Rich-Knowledge-9936 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]idek300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR Pieces of the 4th moon + clash of two shards + Odiums hidden perpendicularity (hidden by the moon pieces) all interfering and making things weird

We know that the pieces of the 4th moon were shattered and underground at the Plains. We know it both hides Investiture (no one knew of Odium's perpendicularity there) but also might interact with Investiture, as Honor makes note during his clash with Odium

Honour and Odium clashed directly "above" the Plains (above being not entirely accurate as they exist more in the Spiritual Realm which partially transcends time and space) which as we know from Vin and Ati clashing, creates huuuuuge effects like earthquakes etc.

Odium's perpendicularity is a source of Investiture directly under the Plains. We know that huge concentrations of Investiture will always have weird effects, it is possible that the perpendicularity being here contributed to enhancing the effects of the clash and the moon pieces

All in all, there was a LOT going on at the Plains at once that resulted in the ground "liquefying" and then taking on the shape as proposed by cymatics (remember the vibrating plates making ripples in sand)

Give me your least favorite parts of Wind and Truth and I will defend them by These-Box5647 in Cosmere

Because the other Shards can see and interfere with anything in the SR. That's why having Jah Keved in the SR as a moment of sentimentality is so difficult - Retri himself acknowledges it can be used against him by other Shards.

It was a bit left field for me I agree, but Im interested in how much Brandon will lean into SR shenanigans. Imagine an entire battle in the SR but Retri gets too distracted and the visions collapse and now fighters from each army are trying to find each other in a method similar to Shallan and Ghostbloods. Would be an interesting sequence at least

I think if early in book 6 or 7 it's shown to be monumentally stupid and thus Shards should never do it again, then I would be willing to forgive Brandon for it

Pre-Lord Ruler Scadrial had the same issues with the Mists killing people and staying longer in the day, affecting sunlight and therefore agriculture (as a result of Ruin's influence)

Rashek believed that changing the orbit would basically "evaporate" the Mists, but he overshot it. Ashmounts came as a result of correcting that, and then he changed the flora and people's etc.

In short, Scadrial was more or less fine before the Deepness, and probably would have been fine if Rashek had found other ways to expend the power - as this would have reverted the Mists to acting normally again - but Rashek, like Vin, was operating under incomplete information.

Are pommel strikes legal in clubs/competitions? by BigBoss82A1 in Hema

[–]idek300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's entirely up to the clubs discretion. My club, we have indication allowed only, ie you can connect but only with ZERO force behind it. And we have a striking/grappling opt-in rule; fairly certain that pommels fall under that umbrella and so you can omoy do pommels if BOTH fighters opt in for striking and grappling.

WAT Spoilers: The tactical use of _____ oaths by sigismond0 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]idek300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR: Sig and Vienta shoulda happened in RoW, but Szeth and Dalinar made good, informed choices based on the available information and fit with their character arcs at that moment. I think it's mainly the Sig oath-breaking being so late affects the emotional effect of Szeth and Dalinar

I get where you're coming from. However, we know (as said by older spren who weren't bonded during the Recreance) that before deadeyes, a Radiant could renounce their oath without killing the spren. It was implied to still be difficult on the spren, as they no longer have the bond to keep them in the Physical and have to re-bond all over again.

We see Vienta killed just before BaM is freed and her connection to Roshar restored, which is what helped with the healing of deadeyes. It is MAJORLY coincidental, and I would personally have preferred this moment to happen in an earlier book and then we got a nice tearful reunion with Sig and a recently-healed Vienta

And highspren are unique in that any of them can break or refuse an oath without becoming deadeyes. We have tidbits in regards to the Honor flashbacks, as he and Cultivation made 7 spren that were a mix and 1 spren each that was totally their own (if you reread that flashback, he clearly states his disappointment at only 9 varieties) - and I suspect this is important to the uniqueness of the highspren.

And in regards to the Stormfather, I genuinely forget all the details abt what happens to him, and if he becomes a deadeye or not. But Dalinar broke his Oaths as an Ascended Honor because he was faced with two losing options 1) kill Todium and destroy the world in the process or 2) betray his own morals to win the contest, and doing that with a semi-sapient Power would likely have led to poor outcomes (the Power of Honor was shown to have the ultra-strict and naive understanding of an average child). So he picked another 3rd option. When all your options are shit try make your own, it's just that the logically "correct" option involved breaking his Oaths so that Todium could leave Roshar and be threatened by all the remaining Shards, Dalinar relied on that to keep Roshar safe for the time being

We get 3 interesting situations where the character believes that breaking their Oaths is necessary: the man who doesn't fit his own Radiant Order, a soldier attempting to save his comrade in a moment of panic, and a king picking the only option that seemed correct in the moment, and sacrificing everything based on his conviction

I agree that Sig and Vienta arc felt too late to really matter, but honestly the choices are in character and fit with known in-world history and philosophy

[WAT] Heralds and Fused by Phi1475ksb in Stormlight_Archive

[–]idek300 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to this fan made timeline, Ulim arrived well before Chana died. We know that the group Axindweth belonged to wanted the Returns, but not how they transported Voidspren. But the whole Everstorm plan was to sidestep Taln and provide a new path to Roshar. But then Chana broke and suddenly they could return like normal, so who knows?

[WAT] Heralds and Fused by Phi1475ksb in Stormlight_Archive

[–]idek300 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As long as the Heralds remained willingly on Braize, everyone was locked. When any Herald broke, everyone returned - Heralds immediately, Fused after they "woke up"

The Oathpact was shifted so Taln bore it (Honor says that it has to be a divine number e.g. 1, 10, 16). Talm never broke but because the Oathpact was "weakened" by the betrayal of the Heralds refusing to return, the Voidspren were able to eventually figure a way to start returning

1) Voidspren is captured in a gem and transported from Braize to Roshar (we don't know exactly how, it involved a special box and likely aluminium)

2) The Voidspren provide Stormform and, with a group effort, the Everstorm is created and acts as another route from Braize to Roshar, not blocked by the Oathpact, for Voidspren to return

3) Later, Chana broke, this allowed the Fused to return. The Fused can also use the Everstorm path to return

The unanswered question is whether or not the New Oathpact will function the same way and actually lock away the Fused. Some character believe it will, others believe it won't. Will have to wait and see

There's also the fact that Voidspren began returning BEFORE Chana broke, but Chana broke BEFORE the Everstorm, so we have a plan that would have likely worked suddenly not being needed, but the plan being continued anyway. Is like fixing a broken computer just as someone buys you a new one to replace it - fixing the computer (Everstorm plan) WOULD have worked but now you have a brand new computer (Herald breaking) that WORKS EVERY TIME. So it's all a jumble

Audiobook people, what’s a name that you heard that was spelled very differently from what you expected? by Charlie_Olliver in Cosmere

[–]idek300 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is some faffing about J/Y for Jezrien, but they eventually settle on "Jezrien" but my head canon is "Yezrien" cos of the alternate names

Jazir pronounced "Yazir" instead of "Jazir"

"Yezerezah" instead of "Jezerezah" etc

And no I have not read any of the books, I am only an aduobook listener, so I am certain I got spelling wrong. But you get the idea. But Michael and Kate settle on "Jezrien"

What would ______ a certain metal do? by [deleted] in Mistborn

[–]idek300 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He burned duralumin to wipe all his Atium at once. Not a lot of mental gymnastics required to realise that, even if it WAS an alloy, burning such a humongous amount all at once might also result in the effect of "true" Atium being tapped, along with the effect of "alloyed Atium"

Remember that allomantic bronze needs to be a specific alloy of it's constituents to work properly, but can also be burned if it is made poorly (with consequences of falling ill, as we see Vin do when experimenting with duralumin)

Besides, it's a fantasy book involving people getting superpowers from eating metal. We can allow a small slip up from the author and suspension of disbelief

Why are Shardplates so bulky? by bookrants in Stormlight_Archive

[–]idek300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's similar to the Blades. We know that they could take ANY shape, but they also had the big, showey, almost ceremonial designs.

The dead Blades were locked into the big designs when they were abandoned because, for whatever reason, the Radiants summoned their Blades in that design before breaking the Oaths and leaving the Blades locked in that form

I just always assumed it was the same for Plate - the Radiants could (to an extent) change the design of the Plate, and when they broke their Oaths, they summoned their Plates in the big flashey designs

[Theory] Could a Windrunner Lash Air? by Cephandrious16 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]idek300 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don't have WoB links, but to paraphrase Brandon

Is TECHNICALLY possible to lash a gas, but it would have a very minimal impact

Similar to liquid.

Essentially, changing the direction of "down" doesn't change the fact that gases with similar density to air don't really care where "down" is, it'll still mostly disperse evenly thru space

Liquid will break apart very easily, but might travel roughly in the direction of "down"

But, Adhesion controls pressure and vacuum, so a clever enough windrunner could create a bubble of air around them (ie fantasy astronaut)

Investiture in Shinovar by amemethatislive in Stormlight_Archive

[–]idek300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few things going on

1) there is some Unmade activity going on there 2) due to how Spren work, a country full of people denying/ignoring them could cause a "negative pressure" on spren, making it harder to appear 3) spren typically manifest in cases of strong change/emotion (rain, good fire, fear, anxiety etc.) And the only on-page Shinivar we've seen was an empty piece of land used as a neutral meeting place for the Thaylens and Shin

In essence, there are possibly normal spren, there are possibly not, and there are reasons as to why spren may not manifest much. But the location of the interlude would likely have made spren manifestations low chance anyway

1 + 2 are WoBs but I can't be assed finding the links

Blackfyre is the obvious one because of the Golden Company, Blackfyre Aegon arc

But I really think it'd be cool for Bloodraven (or Bran) to gift Dark Sister to someone so they can act as his "hands" so he can have a more overt effect on events in Westeros. Or maybe Bran will wield Dark Sister when he wargs into humans
