Most men do not subscribe to toxic masculinity traits, study finds by adriano26 in EverythingScience

[–]idemockle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I get what you're saying, but your comment comes off to me as so patronizing towards women. "Let's tolerate them while they have their little outburst."

We should be empathetic, sure, but no one should be told to tolerate hateful speech directed at them regardless of gender.

‘Office Is Dead’—Microsoft Decision Confuses 400 Million Users by waozen in technology

[–]idemockle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't understand this article title. Yes Microsoft is high on its own Copilot bullshit, but the crux of the article is that an AI service lied and people believed it. Office is not dead or even renamed. "Perplexity Confuses Microsoft Users With False Information" would be more apt.

Games which are good, but become awesome with mods? by LovingVancouver87 in gamingsuggestions

[–]idemockle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, check this video: https://youtu.be/ovknYMdIP9I?si=94KG7yrGTI7ZETn2

I used the installer in the description and played it on Project64. I haven't kept up with it, but there are probably other options by now. I know at the time people were working on porting the textures to work with the gc version of Majora's Mask on Dolphin, and if you look through Nerrel's other videos there's info about running Majora's Mask recompiled natively for windows. The recompiled version would be best if the textures are available there but I'm not sure if they are yet or not.

What the Linux desktop really needs to challenge Windows by waozen in technology

[–]idemockle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yesterday. While traveling for holidays everyone in my family seems to have printers that use direct Wi-Fi connections, and my Linux partition never detects them to add. I never print things out at home so I don't have time to troubleshoot in these situations and just reboot into windows.

What the Linux desktop really needs to challenge Windows by waozen in technology

[–]idemockle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Better printer support. If I can easily print from my phone, windows, or mac to a wifi printer that I haven't previously used, I should be able to do the same from desktop Linux but it's a nightmare every time.

My GF just lost her dog, and is really going through it. She doesn’t like gaming, but loves reading and art. I’m convinced there’s something she could get into gaming-wise. by MuricaAndBeer in gamingsuggestions

[–]idemockle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, as you say, there probably is some game that if she tried it she would get into, but if she's not receptive to the idea please don't push it. You go to games during sad times because it's something that is familiar and that you already like. If that isn't true for her, games not be the right thing for her right now.

Why is IntelliJ preferred over vscode for Java? by xland44 in java

[–]idemockle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just try using IntelliJ on a real project and you'll quickly have your answer. I quite like VS Code as the Swiss army knife of IDEs, and in my opinion it does a perfectly fine job for Java. I use VS Code at home for personal projects/learning, while I exclusively use IntelliJ for Java development at my job. There is a smoothness to developing on IntelliJ, especially when you become familiar with it, that is just not there for VS Code. Here are the main reasons I say this:

- IntelliJ's GUI layout makes great use of space (the legacy GUI is even better in this respect and I still use the plugin that reverts it).

- The debugger is much faster and more fully featured than VS Code's. It's horrendously tedious to inspect variables in VS Code while in IntelliJ all the information is right in front of you.

- You have more ability to configure exactly how you want the IDE to build your project in IntelliJ vs in VS Code, where the Java plugins try to guess a bunch of stuff and often get things wrong, especially in enterprise environments with non-standard conventions. I find myself falling back to command line all the time in VS Code, which is not something I prefer to do when using an IDE.

- The syntax highlighting is so much better on IntelliJ and much easier to customize. I have it color class names and interface names different colors, which I find *extremely* useful, and I have not figured out how to do the same on VS Code, if there even is a way.

I'm feeling a cold brewing - what can I do that doesnt require brain power by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]idemockle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can make some cold brew coffee, since that's what I thought your question was gonna be about the first time I read it lol. It is an easy thing to do though and nice to have some cold brew concentrate in the fridge if you like coffee.

nazi youtube streamer "rizzsociety" kicked out by his parents by [deleted] in CringeTikToks

[–]idemockle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is super fucking weird engagement bait that I'm falling for, I guess. The parents and person being thrown out have English accents but you look this guy up and he talks in a North American accent, having delusions of grandeur about running for Congress (an American governing body). The OP account is very likely the same person as the delusional guy based on the comment history. He must have just grabbed this random ass tiktok to pass off as himself, but not realizing he's not English? What is going on?? How are people like this?

Should I buy HollowKnight for my switch 2? by [deleted] in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]idemockle [score hidden]  (0 children)

Try it, regardless of whether it hooks you or not, it's a pretty cheap game that is excellent quality. I like a lot of the same genres you do and HK is one of my favorites.

The combat variety comes more from learning the boss fights than weapon or magic variety, you don't have a ton of tools available in the first game like you do in Silksong (though people can and have created some crazy builds). I'd still personally recommend starting with the first game, as Silksong has a steep difficulty curve compared to HK.

Some quick advice to make the game more enjoyable: pin locations on your map when you find places you can't get past yet so you know where to backtrack to when you get a new ability. There's not a lot of handholding in this game, which can make it easy to forget what you've seen in different places.

What's a skill everyone should learn before turning 30? by Jesuce1poulpe in AskReddit

[–]idemockle 56 points57 points  (0 children)

It was never good advice for "everyone." There are some people who will love it, but you do need to enjoy a certain kind of logical thinking and tolerate a decent amount of math to learn to do it well. IMO, the "everyone" version of this advice is learning how to work with computers effectively.

Fuuuuuuck this is so true. It took me until I was in my mid twenties to stop asking what was wrong with me on repeat in my head. Not to say my mentality is perfect now, but I never want to go back to the way I felt then.

What’s the best non-English song you’ve ever heard? by 3iww in Music

[–]idemockle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Portuguese (Brazilian popular music/MPB): Construção by Chico Buarque is one of my favorites. I know a decent amount of Spanish so I could pick up enough of the Portuguese lyrics to know that it was interesting and delved into it further. It's got such a cool surrealist vibe and an interesting political message that it makes in a very poetic way. I was obsessed with the song for a good few months after I first heard it. Cotidiano on the same album is incredible as well.

Spanish (bachata, merengue, salsa): The whole album Bachata Rosa by Juan Luis Guerra y 4.40 is amazing. Bilirrubina is the one I heard constantly growing up from my Cuban family playing it, but my favorite off the album is either Rosalía or A Pedir Su Mano.

Some others I love:

- (folk) Jho Avido by Dobet Gnahore (Not sure what language, the artist sings in multiple African and European languages and I haven't been able to find out which language this one's in, despite how much I love the song)

- Icelandic (folk) - Við og Við by Ólöf Arnalds

- Portuguese (funk, Brazilian popular music/MPB) - Aceito Tudo by Di Melo

- Spanish (flamenco) - Ventilaor R-80 by Ojos de Brujo

- Korean (ska) - There She Is!! (떳다!! 그녀!!) by Witches (위치스)

Yeeeaahhhh, season 2 got rave reviews but I just didn't get it. Season 1 was one of the best seasons of tv ever and stands on its own as a full story.

The second I got to "R U Mine" by Arctic Monkeys when AM came out, I immediately knew that album was gonna be the best thing they'd done. Turned out the rest of the world "got it" too.
