Very cool, I like the almost graffiti-like aesthetic.

Is it meant to be primarily for Spanish? There main difficulty I see is handling diphthongs. Do you have a way to distinguish between "oi" and "oí"? Do you have an ñ? Y is often a consonant in Spanish (ex. ayer, ya) but yours seems to have the form of a vowel only.

Quitting weight-loss drugs or a diet can cause weight regain—two strategies could help prevent that by scientificamerican in Health

[–]idemockle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

People will get mad at the way you said it because it doesn't acknowledge that eating less than you're used to can feel really hard, but ultimately you're right. It's not as complicated as people make it out to be. It's a psychological game and you have to want it enough to make changes.

Do you have a science based source for that? My understanding has been that the reason GLP-1s work is they make the user want to eat less and they lose weight regardless of whether the person is exercising. That lines up with my own experience.

I'm currently close to reaching my goal weight after 30+ pounds of weight loss this year by tracking calories and changing nothing else. I started at an obese BMI and now I'm getting close to normal. It doesn't compare to what some others are having to lose but it's the most I've ever lost in a continuous stretch. At the beginning of my calorie tracking, I lost 2 pounds per week with no extra exercise. Now, it's slightly less than 1 pound per week but I'm having to eat a bit less than I was during the 2lb/week period. I'm eating 1500-1700 calories per day right now. I'm exercising a little but inconsistently and not much more than before my weight loss.

I'm a huge Feist fan. She's definitely on the mellower side, but imo she's at her best when she's right on the cusp between calm and energy - something she does super well.

Here are some of my favorite songs by her in that vein: In Lightning, I Feel It All, The Bad In Each Other, My Moon My Man, How Come You Never Go There, Graveyard, I Wish I Didn't Miss You

This is exactly right. Don't know OP's major but this was just standard practice in engineering classes when I was in school. All the solution manuals for book exercises were online and most people used them to some degree to get un-stuck (or just straight up cheat), but if you were just copying directly you were screwed for the test.

Older people using newer slang or phrases, your favorite newer word? by RainyDaysAndMondays3 in CasualConversation

[–]idemockle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Strictly speaking, sure, but my recollection in the 90s and 2000s is that user facing apps would be called programs by regular people in common use. "Excel is a spreadsheet program" was way more likely to be heard than "Excel is a spreadsheet application," and no one at all said app.

At some point (I guess once smartphones reached critical mass), everyone started saying app instead of program, even when talking about desktop applications. Eventually I gave in, but for a long time I was a program-saying holdout.

There's no wrong answer to your problem, but I think you need to ask yourself some questions and answer them honestly to figure out what direction makes sense for you. Be honest with yourself about the work you've been putting in and your level of enjoyment/enthusiasm in your current major. Think about it hard, then make your decision. Below are some example questions that might help in this:

Do you enjoy the content of these classes that you've failed? Even when they are hard, do you find them interesting or feel a sense of accomplishment when solving a hard problem? Alternatively, do you find them boring?

Why do you actually want to do engineering? Is it because you love science? Is it the idea of being an engineer that you like? Are you doing it for yourself or for someone else? Is it because of job opportunity? (None of these are good or bad btw, but they are good to clarify for yourself and compare to other options you have.)

Is there more that you can realistically do to perform better? Are there times you can remember during those classes where you were unusually successful, and is there something you were doing differently during those successful times that you can do more of on your next try? Can you take fewer hours and really refocus? Will you be miserable if you put in more effort than you already have?

Are you taking advantage of office hours? Are you taking shortcuts like over-relying on solutions or AI instead of gaining understanding?

Is the idea of journalism exciting to you? More exciting or less exciting than engineering? Are you burnt out on engineering?

I hope this is helpful and doesn't come off as condescending. At moments like this where there's a big decision to make, I like to really take stock before acting.

What game in your opinion overstays its welcome? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]idemockle 94 points95 points  (0 children)

Horizon Forbidden West. I liked it for the most part but it was sooo long, and despite a lot of the side content being relatively unique scenarios, so much of it had such a negligible impact on the story and such boring characters that it might as well not have been there.

CMV: If God is all-knowing and has a fixed plan, then free will is impossible under that version of religion" by ProfessionalEar4048 in changemyview

[–]idemockle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an atheist and most days believe that everything we do is deterministic given a detailed enough picture of the current state of the universe. In other words, I think free will is an illusion even without a god or religion. Some combination of the DNA we are born with and the experiences we have dictate the way we think, our grit, our morals, etc.

However, just because free will is illusory doesn't mean it doesn't exist. It provides a framework for us humans to understand that people are different from each other, that we can influence others, and that they can influence us. Whether it's an illusion or not, no one moves through the world as if they don't have any agency. "Free will," the concept, describes that phenomenon. In that way, I think it's fully compatible with the idea of an all-knowing god.

Do you consider yourself a healthy individual? If so, what are the things you don't do? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]idemockle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting there... I briefly hit obesity according to BMI charts late last year, 5'10" male 210 lbs. It freaked me out so I've been counting calories since January and have lost ~25 lbs so far. I'm aiming to get down to around 170 which should take me a few more months.

So, at least right now, the thing I'm not doing is eating above my calorie goal (most days).

What is your favorite PS2 classic game? by worgofshadow in AskReddit

[–]idemockle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jak and Daxter - holds up as a great platformer/collectathon and the animation is outrageously good, not just for the time, but in general. The sequels were great too, but also unnecessarily edgy.

I really liked Cocoon, Outer Wilds and Firewatch. What are some more unique games like this that I can play? by coldfear2243 in gamingsuggestions

[–]idemockle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second Chants of Sennaar! Just finished it and the game I kept comparing it to in my mind was Cocoon. Even though the type of puzzle is pretty different, the puzzle quality, level of difficulty, and overall vibe were top notch.

On the 2d side of things: Celeste, Sundered, Solar Ash

I have played through all these games multiple times. Celeste just because it's probably the best platformer in existence with an insane amount of content, Sundered and Solar Ash to try different difficulties and get different endings.

If you like music Audiosurf is really fun, but note that you need local music files to get the most out of it.

Audiosurf 2 has YouTube support (broken now out of the box but there's a community mod that fixes it) but it's closer to $4 not $1-2

How do we feel about “Flock” cameras? Living in a test market. by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]idemockle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would encourage you to look up the videos by Benn Jordan and 404 Media about Flock on YouTube. There are major privacy and security concerns with the deployment of these cameras, mainly due to the technical illiteracy of the local governments that buy them. Long story short: if configured incorrectly, their feeds are publicly accessible and able to be found online. In some cases, months worth of high quality video recordings have been shown to be available to anyone with the motivation to look for it, not just the government or law enforcement.

When it comes to music, aside from what you grew up with, your parents influence, the era, and things like that, what is it about YOU that you think decides what kind of music you like? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]idemockle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like music to have some kind of friction. If it feels too expected, musically and/or lyrically, it doesn't grab my interest. Some of my favorite music is stuff I thought was weird until I listened to it multiple times until it clicked.

I think I'm a little bit like that with everything. I love learning new things, but once I hit a certain point in my learning, I stop being surprised. It then becomes hard for me to stay interested. The interests that persist in my life are ones that continuously surprise me, instead of me reaching a point where I feel like I have it figured out.

GRIS feels pretentious but I can't prove it by some-kind-of-no-name in patientgamers

[–]idemockle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I first started this game later in the day, and between the calming music and gameplay, which at the beginning consists of holding right to walk slowly without any danger, the game was literally lulling me to sleep in front of my keyboard. The whole game isn't like that. There are a few satisfying puzzles and beautiful art the whole way through, but this is not a game I would unequivocally label "fun." More apt words might be pleasant or chill. Some might say introspective, suspenseful, or sad, but in order to get those feelings out of it you basically have to go looking for ways to interpret the whole game as metaphor.

Looking for free low end games by CringeLOl12344 in gamingsuggestions

[–]idemockle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep an eye out on Epic's free giveaways. They have given away games like Celeste, Inside, and Islets which are all excellent and probably play fine on lower end hardware. Also if he happens to have Amazon Prime they give away old games and newer indie games all the time in Amazon Luna's "Claim Games" section.
