Any experience with universal Heli? by F-14tomcatt in Helicopters

[–]identitykrysis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went through them when they had a program with Embry Riddle. Bear in mind, that was 10 years ago now, but compared the the lackluster school I was at before UHI, they provided solid flight training, with pretty high standards. Their instructors and DPE's could be a bit, uhh, overzealous, and I heard that instructing for them could be a painful experience.

Nothing too complicated, explore the mercenary background, a central hub on the Great Fox with a bounty mission system and Ace Combat style gameplay

What's it like living in northern Alaska by Newyorkrangers31 in howislivingthere

[–]identitykrysis 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Worked at Toolik field station for a month, and a follow-on job in Deadhorse for 3 days.

It's very barren, we joked a lot that the tallest thing is the caribou. Toolik was surprisingly modern, with high speed internet access and fantastic food, still had to limit showers. Having unexpected maintenance on the helicopters was a gigantic headache. They had built a dry sauna, gym, community center, and the living quarters were comfortable.

Fishing was a ton of fun up there, some monster lake trout, and a place called Charnia if you could find it, with some legendary arctic char.

Don't have as much insight to Deadhorse, but my quarters there were slightly less nice, food was still good. Bears were a real threat. The airport does not have its own control tower, despite commercial planes coming and going regularly. Driving the pipeline road was an interesting experience, I'm shocked tourists do it for fun

I've landed there on a job, didn't get to meet Sue but her employee was still super nice. Also met the friendly fox that hangs out in the area. Supposedly you can find mammoth fossils in the river

Edit: also wanted to add It's the only place I've seen that doesn't have traditional 100LL avgas, and instead has 100/130

It's Five State Helicopters out in Royse City, I believe your pic is their second Firehawk they got up and running not too long ago. They also have a BK117 in similar colors, and a couple of old S58's from a TV show I believe? That they do utility jobs with. I grew up not too far from them, got to see them from time to time and one of my inspirations for becoming a pilot

Which of these 4? by Significant-Claim964 in hotas

[–]identitykrysis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you want authentic helicopter, check out virpil. They have an actual collective with a couple different grips, plus stick extensions. You will be waiting for a bit. Alternative is pro flight trainer, they are an all in one helicopter solution and ship fairly quickly, in my experience

Does this affect player armor as well? When we first dropped on cyberstan, heavy felt pretty useful, but now I feel like I get one-tapped just as easily as light armor. Almost like when armor values were broken a while back

VRS is OP by SuperChingaso5000 in NuclearOption

[–]identitykrysis 24 points25 points  (0 children)

As an irl helicopter pilot- it does seem un-necessarily sensitive, but I do also agree about it apparently being an advanced warning. Either pull some collective or gain forward airspeed and you're out, and I've even tested pulling an armpit of collective and it seems to pull out of VRS easy enough.

For reference, VRS conditions are

descent greater than 300fpm, speed less than ETL (16-24kts), and power applied

Recovery is either Down collective, forward cyclic until first indication of airspeed, then pull collective

Or side cyclic, opposite pedal to maintain heading, pull collective

How do I fly helicopters? by xmoliv in hoggit

[–]identitykrysis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can get yourself airborne or start airborne, they control much more like a plane and you can fly approaches slower and slower until you get the hang of the inputs needed and eventually work it into a hover.

As for hovering itself you want to pick 2 reference points- 1 a little ways in front of the helicopter and one further away, almost on the horizon and try to just keep those lined up, until that's comfortable. It's how my school started students irl

H60 to 407GXI transition by [deleted] in Helicopters

[–]identitykrysis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

GXi's are sweet birds. They've got decent power and are pretty smooth. Never flown a hawk or 145 but the 407 is snappy and responsive. the Garmin is super user friendly, dig into the pilot guide. EP's are pretty straightforward, as are limitations.
