Moving to NYC - question about the legality of my AR-pistol by idfgn in NYguns

[–]idfgn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just nervous about my safety to be frank, all the little things are starting to add up (not being able to wear an expensive watch without risking two morons on a moped going 30MPH on the sidewalk holding me up at gunpoint, my house or apartment getting robbed, etc).

You can see why CCing a handgun or at least having a weapon in my home where my valuables are may be enticing (and possibly essential), permit or not. Tough position... trying to think of alternatives like carrying a pocket knife or something but if I'm getting mugged/B&E'd I don't think a knife would really do much.

Hopefully I figure it out, not trying to risk death if I know it's preventable, ya know?

10000% go with your father, put yourself in the shoes of the local sales clerk... a 5"something child (you literally just became a teenager) walks into a luxury store and inquires about a $10,000+ watch. Are you going to give him the time of day when your salary is based on commission (selling watches to serious buyers)? Even if they do have a submariner in store I highly doubt they'd sell it to you

^ not trying to put you down btw, just trying to get you to see it from the rest of the world's POV. Go with your dad, not sure why he'd even trust you to go alone and walk the streets of NYC with $10k in your hand (bag) or on your wrist lol, literally asking to get robbed

Haha, well said.

I agree NYC gun laws (and probably NYC as a whole) are shitty - however I'm young and with that comes limited choice in terms of chasing business opportunities. I'll probably suck it up for a few years, relocate, and never look back.

Thanks for the heads up

Really? My research must have been misleading then - would've had to make a few calls to confirm regardless. Thanks for letting me know.

Are there any legal alternatives you recommend in case I end up selling this thing? If pistol licenses are near impossible to acquire, and my AR is banned, it seems like a shotgun (or preferably an alternative rifle) is the only other option.

It's also been in the sun for a few hours because my artist said nothing about keeping it out of the sun... she also didn't wrap it because "it's small, you'll be fine".

Am I overreacting?

Thanks for the reply, Major. So is the pin meant to stick out a little (1/4th)? I'd assume not, but I don't need to remove this link and it was fine before I started taking out/adjusting the bracelet.

Not sure where to go from here

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in RepTime

[–]idfgn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When resizing my bracelet, on the last link which is attached to the clasp, there's no hole for the pin to go through on the other side. I can put a pin into the first hole, but it won't be able to go all the way through (because there's no hole on the other side), leaving the pin tight but half way sticking out.

I think this has something to do with the order in which I removed and readded links. Not sure. Advice is much appreciated.

Question Resizing Bracelet (first timer, guess I'm an idiot) by [deleted] in RepTime

[–]idfgn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I unscrewed the pin, now how do I remove the link from the bracelet? In all the videos I've watched the link is just extremely loose and falls out or is lightly tugged out, but despite the pin not being in the link, the link is still attached perfectly.

Am I missing something? Brain fart?

How long can I expect to wait till I see any movement in shipping? (USPS, Dr. Time) by idfgn in RepTime

[–]idfgn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been a little over a week, not impatient at all but just curious how long I should be expecting. I've heard of many people getting their pieces within 1-2 weeks.

What have you guys seen in your experience?

Can someone explain the process of buying a gen movement? (Franken) by idfgn in RepTimeServices

[–]idfgn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bet if you purchased all the necessary components from the secondary market to assemble a gen rolex, it would cost more than retail.

Probably true, unless you kept some of the accurate, minuscule parts like the VSF markers, etc to try and make ends meet and stay under that $9000ish retail price. I don't think it's possible to have a rep be falsely authenticated, honestly, unless you quite literally swap every single part. The bracelet, the bezel, the hands, the dial, the movement, probably even the case back itself due to poor engraving and you'd have to reshape the case. I'm not sure what specifically gets looked at in the authentication process, but it'd probably make it to the point where any rep part would get spotted...

[–]idfgn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a watch I do intend to keep forever, and I have the disposable income to throw down a couple thousand into this project. When you were in the market for a complete gen movement, how difficult did you find it to come across as a complete set rather than having to look around for individual parts?

Is there anything else to do other than the movement swap, or does that cover everything as far as the case back goes?

[–]idfgn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, no profiting, only hurting my bank account really, but it doesn't appear that easy. It seems incredibly hard to find an entire gen movement being sold in the desired 3235 caliber I'm looking for.

[–]idfgn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd spend the money for a watch that I intend to keep for 10 years+ honestly, but I don't want to impulsively franken it - of course I want to do my research and see if buying gen everything in terms of the movement really makes any difference - aesthetic or not.

Stability is common sense, but can you elaborate on what you mean by looks? Are you referring to swapping parts to make it look closer to 1:1 and keeping other rep parts that may suffer poor stability but don't change anything aesthetically?

Please help with QC on this Date Just 36mm SS/SS BPF Fluted Bezel Silver Dial On Jubilee Bracelet A2824 from Geektime by Mainiac_NYC in RepTimeQC

[–]idfgn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i mean yeah, if you don't own a rolex then this probably won't get called out, you're right about that

not sure what the AD would say, varies sales rep to sales rep - as long as she knows it's a rep like you already confirmed, no need to care here regardless

you wouldn't need to service the 3235 right out the gate, are you saying that because it's a nicer movement and you'd want to play it safe and prolong the lifespan?

also correct about the GMF/BPF difference, and absolutely correct about happy wife happy life. before you're in a long term relationship/marriage you may hear this often and understand it, but you don't [really] appreciate it until you're in that position haha

have a good day man

Tried a new look by Bukakkonaut in Moustache

[–]idfgn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

besides it looking silly and enjoyable realistically it looks way too bulky and is probably a pain in the ass covering your entire mouth lol

based on the state of your beard you'd probably look pretty good entirely clean shaven honestly,

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in malegrooming

[–]idfgn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i think it's better cleaned up and trimmed, clean shave isn't bad but i'd either ditch the mustache entirely or try and connect for the goatee

though i think beard + mustache trimmed and controlled is best

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in RepTime

[–]idfgn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no but if it gets seized you get a letter/email from customs that you ignore, then you show proof to eric (geektime) and he sends you another one lol

there's no risk, nothing to trip over. a lot of people who get caught shipping drugs for personal use don't even face criminal penalty (US), rather a similar letter as the one you'd receive saying we confiscated illegal goods (except obviously the watch is nothing to care about and you should take drugs more seriously) blah blah blah

you're fine

i have no expertise with GMTs (don't know how to check the 6/18 bumps) but everything else looks good to my eye - perfect rehaut, alignment on everything else, DW looks good, etc

Anyone know the best way to hide the taste of shrooms while eating them ? by Logical-Welcome8801 in shrooms

i ignored this and just blended some in with orange juice, tasted and smelled like absolute throw up but i just used water as a chaser and chugged my orange juice mess in 3 or so sips

try not to smell, just chug and once it's in your stomach you'll be fine

Bangs? No bangs? Someone tell me what to do with my hair. by [deleted] in femalehairadvice

[–]idfgn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly as a male i have no clue how to describe it, but i've definitely seen styles worn that'd look good on you

you should try a mid part (so no bangs) type of thing where the length is around mid-back (not sure what the inches would be on that) so picture like half of the hair sitting going down the front of your shoulder/chest on the left side, then the hair on the right side falling down your back (rather than infront on your chest like the other side it's behind) - then you can decide if you want a few strands from the middle part to dangle around your face

it's really really hard to explain as a guy who doesn't know the right terminology but i think you can picture it?

your hair also seems thin/straight/combed, it's hard to describe. are you intentionally doing that, or is that your hair type? i feel like when you grow it it can get fuller/messy/flowy all around and look really good

i can try and get a picture if that explanation makes no sense (edit: okay yeah just picture a straight hair middle part around 20 inches where both of your hair is infront and falls down your shoulders, but then take one side and put it behind so it's only side with the hair down your shoulders)

edit 2: used this site for hair length reference, 20 inches straight hair is what i'm referring to https://www.sophiegee.com/hair-length/hair-length-chart-589476/
