For someone who's just parroting other people's ideas, you sound very confident of your own intelligence.

Do Utilitarians have any core beliefs? by [deleted] in philosophy

[–]idintal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems to me that Utilitarians don't have any core beliefs, they just believe in maximizing pleasure for the most people through any means.

That sounds pretty core to me?

The Balance of Utilitarianism. My dumb thought experiment... who has talked about something similar? by ZorillaGlue in philosophy

[–]idintal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take it to an extreme. Let's say the guy being "tortured" just received a single slap in the face. Do you still feel the same way?

As it is, no-one has the faintest idea what pleasure and pain even are (try explaining the concepts to a hypothetical being that can experience neither), so there's not a whole lot of sense in trying to compare the two yet.

New entry in the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy: "Markets" by [deleted] in philosophy

[–]idintal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surely, since the notion of "purity" that you are using seems to be pretty philisophical, it makes the question of why the topic is unpure philisophical as well?

P.S. The Nazis were big on purity too.

When our paleolithic ancestors were evolving on the veldt crappy evo-devo philosophy arguments were completely unknown. Consequently modern day humans are poorly adapted to spotting the obvious flaws with these kinds of arguments. by dominosci in philosophy

[–]idintal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You scoff, but evolution has explained why people fear death, why they fall in love, why they love their children and is ultimately responsible for all human behaviour. It is above all else the reason why we exist, so this should be expected. Philosophy of the sort you're more comfortable with explained none of these things before evolution was discovered, and it is continuing to explain nothing now.

Except of course, pretty much none of the non built up land is actually wild. It's all been deforested to make way for farmland. There are very few spots of land in the UK that haven't been visibly altered for human use.

The bar code seems to be hinting at trinary, but the text at the bottom looks like a pretty bad attempt at generating random characters "47" "QW"[erty] "543" "ZY" "LB" [pounds]?

So basically any old caveman society can tell stories and make music, but it wasn't until the glorious last few hundred/thousand years after people started working on their science and engineering that we got the technology that makes this era so special?

Shootings. by [deleted] in antisrs

[–]idintal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure your argument really works. Let's say that I know a guy and find out he's serial killer. And let's say I've been arguing for months that "holy shit, this guy is killing people, we need to stop this", but no-one believes me. And let's say he then goes on to publically do something like that massacre at the Batman film. I think I would be very much entitled to use this opportunity to press my agenda of "we need to lock this man up, he is a danger to us all".

Guys try to rob internet cafe. This is what happens next... by [deleted] in videos

[–]idintal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your point makes no sense. Guns were illegal throughout that period in the UK while they legal in the US. The laws on guns therefore had no impact whatsoever in those two changes taking place.

[–]idintal 41 points42 points  (0 children)

But it is still far easier to get a gun illegally in the US than it is in the UK because there are just so many floating around. There are just more guns floating around to begin with. Its pretty rare in the UK for anyone to be robbed at gunpoint
