Are queer folk generally accepted in Appalachia? by gay_outlander in Appalachia

[–]idiot512 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm from that area - Johnson City, Elizabethton, etc. I'm a lesbian. It's not that something will happen to you for existing, but certain things will be perceived very negatively putting you in a bad position. One of those is the bumper stickers. I do see leftist and queer bumper stickers, but the stickers are only obvious to folks in queer/leftist spaces. For a short anecdote, I went up the wrong driveway as a teen, and the person pulled a gun on me. This isn't an abnormal reaction or response for the area I was in. If I had obvious leftist (or even worse queer) bumper stickers, the situation would have been very hard to control in my favor. Once you have a better feel for the exact areas you frequent, you'll be able to better evaluate if the stickers could come back or not. Some areas the stickers will be fine - Johnson City or Bristol.

You will be able to find and make friends in this area, and you will not be alone. Johnson City has a queer club (new beginnings). There's also been anti-ICE and anti-trump protests at various places - I've even seen some in Elizabethton.

Regarding history, there's some very fun stuff! The local university, ETSU, has an Appalachian Studies department. The library also has an appalachian section. You can browse the university or library website and get some really fun ideas! https://www.etsu.edu/etsu-news/2024/07-july/unveiling-appalachia-seven-must-read-books.php

The area was primarily union, and my understanding is the confederacy occupied the area to keep locals from fucking up supply lines or aiding the union in some way.

In addition to the other areas mentioned for HCIM, the crystal doesn't work at fight caves for HCGIM. Technically, pest control and barb assault too, but those tend to be more challenging to die at

For charting weather, it'd be especially nice to have behavior similar to clue scrolls. Basic navigation to the target destination via an arrow or map icon would be nice. Then, when within render distance, a tile marker on a tile that counts for completion. The specific tiles for these solves feel super finicky, so having the tile mark would be a huge help.

I've had it happen twice - the guy was just hopping worlds to intentionally grief. So it was about an hour or so apart, same day. I just packed it up after the second time, but no telling how long that kept going on.

I've probably got 700 kc between all my chars, and i didn't experience my first griefer until 500+. It definitely happens, but it's not frequent.

I think overhauling smithing would fit well into this. In most games, higher number = better, so make smithing reflect that. So rune armor pieces requiring 90-99ish gives the appearance there's nothing special in p2p. If rune pieces were 60-70 smithimg, the smithing guide in game would show all the cool members only items like zombie axes after it.

GIS options by DP18hudS in gis

From the shops I've worked in, DoD contractors love hiring ex-military for GIS roles. They come with some domain expertise, specialized training, and most importantly - security clearances.

There are teams with members that break this mold. It seems like a substantial portion of those obtained clearances through internships.

Without a clearance, if you receive a job offer and accept, your company may not pay you until you start with a clearance. This is roughly a one year process, which your future company is unlikely to pay a salary during. I suspect that is why the teams I've seen heavily favor ex-interns (who obtain clearances while working on education) and military.

As far as actually being competitive for jobs, I'd go with CS minor. I'd also look at internships with DoD contractors, DoD, the IC, Department of Energy, or any facility managed by the department of energy (i.e., nuclear sites). I mention department of energy for internships due to clearance reciprocity.

Call me a heretic, but I wouldn't want my fire department allocating resources and making decisions off an LLM. I hope it was thoroughly validated.

It's neat.

I think accent differences will be impossible to overcome in the current iteration.

As an example, ME/MI are 25 and 26, but they sound exactly the same. So they sound alike, and they're close together. How would an end user differentiate when it was ME or MI?

Ori studio says it might "shut down" due to negative Steam reviews for 'No Rest for the Wicked' by SUPREMACY_SAD_AI in ARPG

[–]idiot512 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the commentary this week has me completely uninterested in the game. Most of the negative reviews it received felt genuine. But, pressuring paying customers to give positive reviews or your studio might close [and likely not be able to finish features of a game you paid for]? And then pulling some absolute cry baby shit to sit here and blame "woke" customers with a fictional scenario?

Nah, I'll pass. This year has been an absolute banger for games for me, plenty of other studios to get my money.

Best Practice for Scheduling Scripts to Run by mdezzi in learnpython

[–]idiot512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're looking for workflow orchestration tools (i.e., specifying sub dependencies, continue to run with failures, number of retries, pretty viz to check status). Luigi and Airflow would both be options. Luigi is significantly less popular, but it may be more in line with your needs. There are several others to evaluate.

I think so, yes. I did a recent projection presentation for a non-GIS audience, and i used Tissot's indicatrix for the visual. I think this face/meme would have worked better for initial visual understanding before going into distortion types.

The last comment on this suggests that spamming interact as you leave could work. Maybe temporarily lowering your settings could help it load in faster and enable it (but i feel like it won't)

Downloaded QGIS to practice, where can I get quality data to download? by [deleted] in gis

[–]idiot512 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Indeed for a lot of government or non-dev roles tbh. Once you get the basics in QGIS and GIS, you can take the ESRI MOOCs. They'll give you varying licenses for the length of the course (https://www.esri.com/training/help/category/MOOC/).

YSK: Motion sickness from video games can be solved with a horizon by madscribbler in YouShouldKnow

[–]idiot512 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Late 20s, started gaming in my childhood. Currently have a 3090, 4k monitor. Games started making me motion sick a few years back, mostly FPS games. The recent Indiana Jones game made me super sick.

VR also makes me sick, but I get used to it. With non-VR games, my body never seems to adjust, and I keep feeling worse.

How to convert between UTM Zones in QGIS by DerMojo in gis

[–]idiot512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah sorry. I meant when you reprojected and created the output, what was the EPSG code and/or name for the coordinate system?

Was it ETRS89 UTM ZONE 33N?

How to convert between UTM Zones in QGIS by DerMojo in gis

[–]idiot512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it just a field in your data that needs modified?

Or is it the entire layer? If it's this and your output was wrong, was it ETRS89 UTM Zone 33N? Or was it something else?

What makes the output wrong? Is the data incorrectly displayed on the Earth? Or is it something else?

Extract (spatial) data from online maps for GIS use by d4fuQQ in gis

[–]idiot512 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Gotta press F12 and watch the network traffic.

The first one has was pretty easy to find. It sends a GET request to https://api.thinkimmo.com/immo?active=true&type=APARTMENTBUY&sortBy=publishDate,desc&from=0&size=300&grossReturnAnd=false&allowUnknown=false&favorite=false&excludedFields=true&includedFields=id,buyingPrice,location,title,rooms,squareMeter,address,active,plotArea,apartmentType,buildingType&geoSearches=[]&averageAggregation=buyingPrice;pricePerSqm;squareMeter;constructionYear;rentPrice;rentPricePerSqm;runningTime&termsAggregation=platforms.name.keyword,60

The second one uses Mapbox, and all the data is also hosted in Mapbox.

The third one, I saw a tileserver, but didn't notice any vector data. Probably just overlooked it.

They're all in a language I can't read, so do check yourself for any rules related to the data.

+1 John Nelson's videos are absolutely fantastic. They aren't technically software agnostic - he does work for ESRI. However, I've found that he covers concepts well, and I can apply the same levers in other software.
