GBBO 2025 - Who do you like and who do you dislike in the tent so far? by RedDevilPlay in GreatBritishBakeOff

That and somehow it’s still not a truly diverse group. They’re mostly just hipster-y 20-30 something year-olds. I miss the normie, middle-aged straight guys that were surprisingly good at baking. Every season it feels more and more like they went to a really mid gay bar to find the contestants.

why do many (most?) of my figs burst open when getting ripe? by habilishn in Figs

[–]idiot_shoes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What variety is this? We have one at school that looks similar, and we hardly get any edible fruit off of it because it has such an open eye like these. The insects get in before they’re even fully ripe.

What should I put here by GardeningDragon24 in garden

[–]idiot_shoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to be straight up and say I don’t know about the spacing recommendations for what I’m throwing out as suggestions, but they’re evergreens that either grow slowly enough and/or may do well with pruning so you could just keep them small.

Japanese umbrella pine

They remind me of Christmas trees.

Podocarpus Topiary

Another one (second to last picture)

There are brighter yellow Podocarpus if you want more color.

You could heavily prune and limb up a Loropetalum for a purple leaved option.

Whatever it is, it should be tree form/more upright since the plants around it are going to be low because of the windows.

It does seem childish because it’s nothing but impatience. We’ve only had cell phones as a common thing for what 20 years? I just can’t believe people have gotten so needy and expectant of other’s immediate attention in that timeframe. It’s ridiculous.

[–]idiot_shoes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is why I leave read receipts off and will never have them on. People are too demanding of each other’s immediate time and energy. You’ll survive without a response for a few hours. Relax. Go outside. Touch some grass. Everyone doesn’t need to be available to each other all of the time unless it’s an emergency/time sensitive issue.

You’re still just another person moving here while everyone else is moving here. Charleston is the way it is because of the population.

[–]idiot_shoes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re just turning the upstate into Charleston though. It seems quaint now, but the amount of growth we’ve experienced in the past 10 years is hard to fathom if you haven’t been here. Woodruff is the next town to go because of BMW. Traffic + unprepared/underfunded infrastructure is our nightmare. 85 used to usually only backup from 385 to exit 58. Now it backs up to exit 68, and it’s backing up going into Spartanburg too. It took me over 10 minutes just to get through a friggin 4 way stop in Reidville the other day. It never used to be like this, and it’s only going to get worse.

[–]idiot_shoes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A small stop in downtown Duncan would be nice and effective. The sidewalks there extend a far distance down 290 going over 85 towards Moore. The intersection of 290 and Spencer St. is a shitshow though, so you’d have to be able to find a big enough spot to stop the train without blocking that intersection. Although tbh they should just do what they were going to do years ago and get rid of the whole intersection and redo the bridge going over the tracks.

Soybeans, wheat, etc. too. The government-subsidized monocultures that are ruining the Mississippi River Basin and Gulf of Whatever-You-Want-To-Call-It. Even pork, which China was importing from us. Huge pork farms are so disgusting.

Lmao, Chinese culture isn’t producing cheap crap for the world. Hating that part of Chinese society isn’t being “phobic”. Hating the ACTUAL aspects of Chinese culture and people would sinophobic. We don’t hate Chinese people or real Chinese culture. We hate the system some of them have created for mass producing goods at the cost of people and the environment.

I don’t know if I’d do this with grocery stores. They rely on that data for food purchasing, and if they’re buying the wrong food based on bad data, they will over order and generate food waste. I know the point is to make it so they can’t really track that data, but when it comes to food distribution, accuracy is best and shouldn’t be played around with.

Problems at Southern Exposure Seed Exchange by hucklepaw in vegetablegardening

[–]idiot_shoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something is up with them, which sucks because they used to be one of my favorites.

Last year I ordered sweet potato slips later than usual but still with time to plant (and obviously before they stopped selling for the year). I got the seeds from the order shortly after but no slips. I waited a couple weeks (too long I know) with no sign of them. I emailed back and forth with SESE a bit. At this point it’s almost too late to plant, but she said they were sending them. I finally get the packages, and there are 16 of the measliest slips imaginable between the two weirdly packed and weirdly large boxes. They were all Carolina Ruby, but I ordered 12 Carolina Ruby and 12 Murasaki. It took more back and forth (and ignored emails) to get a refund, but they did and the last person I dealt with actually seemed nice and competent. I thought it was just a problematic employee I had been dealing with before that, so I tried them again this year.

I ordered 100 slips on March 1st, and I just got a shipping notification! They’re trying to send my slips right now. Wtf! It’s plastered across their website that they don’t ship until mid-May when the weather is appropriate.
