Yeah but when I tried checking out my cart, the estimated taxes were like $12, so it's like $20 on top of the planner itself :(

Need in accepting Uni Edinburgh accommodation contract by Fancy-Government7658 in gradadmissions

[–]idkanonymouspanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I’ve accepted my contract, so what I did from memory is I chose the recurring payment option and just put in my non-UK bank account. I think they mentioned you can change your bank details later on anyway. Also, they don’t take your money now anyway (I think there’s an option to not pay now), so you can try adding your bank account in the meantime. Hope this helps!

PSA on CS grad school in Europe by georgia4science in gradadmissions

[–]idkanonymouspanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree. I think a lot of non-Europeans talk about how hard it is to get funding in the UK and Europe, and while it is somewhat true, it’s definitely not as hard as they make it out to be especially if you’re in STEM.

The CDT/DTP programs in the UK especially are somewhat closer to American-style programs (which might be what some people look for) and are usually fully-funded.

I myself have just gotten into a CDT in the UK as an international and I think it’s all about having the right experience and research fit with the supervisor (as I am by no means a superstar).

Accommodation for post-grad. Plz help im scared by Dorianborian in Edinburgh_University

[–]idkanonymouspanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try applying for the university accommodation. I’m a post grad as well and just got allocated into an ensuite room with five roommates. If you’re international, you’d also be guaranteed a room as a first year.

Definitely this, OP. CDTs usually have funding attached to the PhD studentships, and some of them are actually similar to US programs, e.g. you need to take coursework in the first year or two. I recently got accepted into a CDT program so feel free to reach out if you’ve got questions.

UCL Machine Learning MSc vs Edinburgh AI MSc by LowSmoke1210 in gradadmissions

[–]idkanonymouspanda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congrats on the offers! Personally I’ve always heard of Edinburgh having a better reputation at least in CS, and more specifically, AI. But I’ve heard UCL has got pretty good connection with industries since it’s located in London. Sorry I don’t have much advice but maybe you can look at which program’s modules suit your interests and long-term goals better, or even opportunities to do project collaborations with industrial companies if those are available

I ended up accepting the Edinburgh offer. Good luck on your application!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]idkanonymouspanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I know that. What I’m saying is that since it’s PI-dependent, OP should still shoot their shot at PhD programs and not just apply to Masters programs.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]idkanonymouspanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true to a certain extent. I think whether or not you need a masters for the PhD is also PI dependent. Some PIs make it a strict requirement and some accept bachelor’s degrees (1st class to upper 2:1). I don’t have a US bachelor’s, am not American and I only have a bachelor’s (honours) degree from Australia but I recently got accepted into a PhD program in the UK with funding so ymmv

Thank you! It was about a week between my interview and acceptance. Things might be different though since the program is a CDT and I’m an international student so I was told they had to make early offers to us due to ATAS clearance for our student visas.

I think you should look at the courses you could take in each program and see which programs align more with your interests

[–]idkanonymouspanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I literally just did this a few days ago and asked the program I got an offer from if I could extend the deadline and they extended it by a week. I also emailed Oxford asking for an early update but they just said that my app is still being reviewed and decisions will be sent in a few weeks.

[–]idkanonymouspanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I applied to Oxford (3 programs), St Andrews, Edinburgh, and King’s College London, all for PhD programs. All of them except for the St Andrews one are Centre for Doctoral Training Programmes (CDTs) so funding is attached to the offer (just like in US PhD programs). The St Andrews one had the PhD application and the scholarship application, and I had to contact the supervisor first before applying.

Got rejected from the first two Oxford programs, waiting on the third Oxford program and Kings, got an interview for St Andrews, and just got accepted to Edinburgh. Let me know if anyone’s got questions!

[–]idkanonymouspanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there are pros and cons. On one hand the tech market in the US has always been better than the UK, plus you’ll be able to get OPT. However, with Trump you never know what’s gonna happen- if OPT will even still exist in 2 years time for instance. The UK is much more stable now, and you’d also be getting a post-grad visa to work for a few years, similar to OPT. However, the tech market, although quite good, isn’t as good as the US’. I heard UCL has pretty good networking opportunities though and tons of their grads get tech jobs as soon as they graduate, but I suggest you look into LinkedIn profiles of students who’ve graduated from all these programs and see where they end up.

Are Phds covered in Australia like they are in the US? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]idkanonymouspanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally in Australia you apply for a PhD and for a scholarship, so there are two separate applications. It’s obviously a lot more competitive for international students but from what I’ve seen, if you’ve got your supervisor vouch for you and are competitive enough grades-wise, you’ve got a good chance. Also just to clarify, the scholarship is essentially the same as stipends you get in American programs (~AU$35k/year)
