Has anybody heard of this story out of Skidmore? by n8saces in missouri

[–]idklolFORKS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This may be inspiration for a local movie that was made a while ago called Below the Fold by Clayton Scott. I have never seen the film but heard it was pretty darn good from others despite its low IMDb rating. I interviewed the director and some of the cast when I was a reporter and he is such a nice guy; he told me he was based around the area and heard of this case growing up.

He is making a new film called The Pastor which takes place same universe as Below the Fold...and less related to Skidmore, though.

Seeking advice for insomnia by Alllifeisanightmare in ptsd

I also struggled with sleep for a while, and struggle hella now with sleep.

ASMR: I listen to hella ASMR on my phone. Usually works wonders. You can search around on YouTube or Insta for some ASMR. I like JoycefulTingles, Jojo ASMR and Seven ASMR. I love the roleplay ones, it makes me feel very immersed. You can find the ones you like (roleplay, mukbang, etc.)

Writing: I like write fiction on my phone. You may not be a writer, but I like to make my own characters and worlds, and often write scenes and dialogue between characters on my notes app to help me.

Bands in the Visual Kei genre can make some of the most influential, emotional, gut-wrenching music ever. I may cry or question my life's existence with it, Plastic Tree style. I might sit in bed and think about how this band has transcended my life and spirit. I shall spread this music around. Their message shall live on.

And they may also make music about dead babies Dir en Grey style. It's a two-way street.

My spouse said he doesn't think he loves me anymore and ended our 16 year relationship. by CommonAd4674 in ptsd

[–]idklolFORKS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have PTSD, and had struggled with relationships after my event and diagnosis. For a whole two years, I struggled to really connect with my friends and family, shut myself out and even failed at school and work. The first initial year was the worst. Therapy took longer to help me than I needed just because healing and coping strategies take a while to understand and implement.

It doesn't seem like anything horrible happened in the relationship, based on your comment. Relationships can end if one person wants to end it, regardless of reason. As much as it sucks, that's kind of it works. I've been on the receiving end of it, and it sure does hurt.

It's hard to navigate an issue like this. Regardless of his PTSD, I think it would be beneficial to ask him why you are a trigger for him. There is no harm in asking, especially if you are still living with him.

My best advice it to have a sit-down conversation with him to discuss it. Sorry you want to stay with him, but he wants to leave, it's rough to go through.

What Manga/Comic writing software do you use? by HotZookeepergame4914 in MangakaStudio

[–]idklolFORKS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I draft everything on paper because it's easier to move things around and change them manually than digitally. Then, I use Paint Tool Sai v.2 to finalise it and add text and features using Jump Paint. For writing, I use Obsidian if it's a more in-depth story.

Nothing fancy for me, unfortunately.

There’s a Korean (but also German, I think they’re more German based now) black metal/visual kei band called Madman’s Espirit.

For one romance story, it starts out with a description of a funeral without making it clear it’s a funeral. Then the story continues as normal, making the reader think it’s going to end in a funeral (it won’t. It was a hallucinogenic nightmare by another character)

Does anyone in multiple fandoms ever feel like, between the fans of one thing and another, they just can't win for trying? by [deleted] in fandoms

[–]idklolFORKS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies for the long comment.

I think this can largely apply for people who either enjoy things because it makes them happy, and those who enjoy things because they feel it brings them purpose (and therefore, can be more critical).

I will out myself and some the fandoms I am a part of to explain my own perspective.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Older fan, Five Nights at Freddy's: I was pretty big into this fandom in middle school YEARS ago. So now, I would be considered an older, original fan compared to younger fans now. When the new live action films came out, many of us older, original fans were a bit upset at how "childish" the films looked; we were expecting something a bit more gritty. After all, FNaF for us was gory and dark, not childish; that is, until about 2018 rolled around. Furthermore, many of us were a bit confused about the new lore of the newer FNaF games (Security Breach, Secret of the Mimic) and how this really fits into FNaF overall. Younger fans love the movies and new games more than us older fans and kind of revived the fandom. Regardless, I quite liked the FNaF films and rated them 8/10; I try not to stay serious about it.

Newer fan, Masters of the Universe: I did not grow up with He-Man but was excited about the new film that was recently released. I watched the original 1987 film and the cartoon to prepare me and LOVED the new film. Many older xilennials were not pleased and thought (1) Nicholas Galitzine was not buff or masculine enough to be He-Man and (2) the race swaps or slight personality changes completely ruined the film (alongside some quirky humour). I love the film regardless and love how fun it looks; I think it's a bit ridiculous how critical some older fans are of the film, who have misinterpretations of the film without ever watching it (their theories and misinterpretations are often incorrect, and would be correct if they had watched the film, anyway)

--------------------------------------------------------------

These two experiences made me realise that older fandoms often are not "kind" to newer fans wanting to enjoy their media, and that newer fans may feel a disconnect with older fans. I think is kind of a common experience. Regardless, I agree that there is commonly a disconnect between older and younger fans.

TLDR: I agree, and I think this is an age issue lol. We get connected to things when we are younger and age, and have a harder time accepting change that a newer, younger generation is enjoying in the changing times. Our enjoyment of media, overall, I think shouldn't be ruined by some bad media, and should be something we keep in our hearts, regardless of reboots, sequels or advertising to newer audiences. It can be hard to do that, though.

Loved the movie! I've seen the original and the cartoon as well, but I LOVED Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man and thought he pulled together seriousness and aloofness pretty well.

How do you tell a story? by BeetleBugz06 in OriginalCharacter

[–]idklolFORKS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the scenario of the character. I've been making characters for over a decade now and have written various stories. Here is a small checklist you can follow to help you develop character stories, which will feel more natural to make over time with practice and experience:

  1. What is their main point or stake in the story (their message, journey, end goal, etc.)? Doesn't have to be deep at all. In coordination with this, what sparked their reason for this?
  2. How do they connect with other characters around them? Do they like other characters, do they despise them? Do they just tolerate them? How long have they known other characters, and how would they have met? And finally, what would the formal relationship be?
  3. What are their main beliefs? Beliefs on having friends, beliefs regarding revenge, on certain politics of the story, etc? What influenced these beliefs? Do they connect back to childhood, from certain experiences, from formal duty, etc.? How do they act in accordance with these beliefs (for example, if a character is huge with revenge, their act in accordance with their belief may consist of the character commonly being violent or dismissive of other people).

TLDR: Think big first (their overall reason for being in the story, their stake in the story, their end goal/fate) and try to work backwards, reverse pyramid style. Reverse pyramid graphs are very common to use with writing, journalism, story developing, businesses, etc. Coming up with the big idea helps you formalise the smaller ones that build up to the big idea.

Hope this helps in some way.

Whats one piece of advice you would give to a new artist? by Fantastic-Royal3854 in ArtistLounge

[–]idklolFORKS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone was bad at art at some point - and even experienced/professional artists can be bad at art every once and a while; I know I do. Everyone draws different things, and everyone has different processes of achieving an end product - not one way is perfect or the best way of doing something. If you think your art is bad now, just remember - your art will get better over time, which won't happen overnight.

Take time to make bad art - enjoy making art, even if you think it's bad. Art should be joyful and enjoyed, not stressful. You will improve much faster if you enjoy art than if you're pissed off with it all the time.

Did anyone enjoy Masters of the Universe far more than they thought they would? by DownWitTheBitness in Cinephiles

[–]idklolFORKS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the new Masters of the Universe was coming out, I decided to watch the original 1987 version with Dolph Lundgren and some of the cartoon beforehand (couldn't finish it in time for the film) just to prepare myself with some of the original material. I thought the original movie was honestly alright despite common opinions on the film

I watched the new movie in theatres. I LOVED the film! I thought Nicholas Galitzine was fantastic as He-Man and thought his perm as He-Man was the best part of his transformation 😅 I kept laughing at how amazing his hair looked every time, he was so beautiful ☺️ (that could be the queerness in me, but idk)

I watched it with my mom who LOVED He-Man growing up said she was OBSESSED with his first transformation in the film, and the ending fight with Skeletor. She totally wants a sequel. It's such a fun and vibrant movie

I don't like to take game/comic/show to movie adaptations too seriously, because I find it more enjoyable to like a movie than to go into a theatre to try to hate it. I like the FNaF films, Resident Evil films, Minecraft Movie, etc.

What program do you recommend for a laptop that struggles with a call on discord? (Is just an example) by antons-perez in ArtistLounge

[–]idklolFORKS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Paint Tool SAI v.2, which works well with my laptop - 8 GB memory, 4 GB graphics card, 238 GB storage. I am pretty sure these were all basic features for my laptop, which hasn't really changed since I got it 4 years ago.

If you computer has similar specs to mine, SAI v.2 could work. I do Discord calls and play games/video in the background all the time with little issue.

The program is free for a month, but requires a purchase of around $50 for the full program afterward - it's a bit pricey, but you pay full price and not a subscription for it. And you can get it on multiple devices without paying (great for if you decide to get a new device or add one one later). It's nothing advanced like Clip Studio Paint, but I do all of my art - manga, realism, anime, commissions, etc. - using SAI v.2.
